Hey, what about us?!

1999-04-19 Thread Wynn Harris

Hola P2ers!

I came across this and thought you folks might be amused and wondered if
anyone has written about us? Having met and known a few P2ers, perhaps we
are best kept secret.g

Mandy Barnet, again

I had been paying not so close attention to the Mandy Barnet thread, but
did anyone mention the obvious kd lang/owen bradley/shadowland comparison?

Rhonda Vincent and the Rage

1999-04-13 Thread Wynn Harris

Hey folks, I just saw Rhonda Vincent and the Rage with Ron Spears, Ron
Stewart, Steve Sutton and I forget the bass player. They were just awsome.
I love Rhonda's voice and how she sings with Ron is killer!! History
please?!? I have two of her CD's, Yesterday and Today and The Sally
Mountain Show, but I would like more of her progressive stuff. Thanks!

After all that likker, you may want to turn on REM (is that "our favorite
band?") and listen to "It's the end of the world...and I feel fine."

many releases? Where are they now? ETC.!

I really hate doing this......

1999-03-22 Thread Wynn Harris

I received this on Sunday, March 21 in the morning. Hopefully, when
Charles (Sawtelle) was making the transition to his new life plane he
passed over/thru Austin and enjoyed some of the great music he had been a
part of during his life here on earth.

It is with great regret to inform his friends and loved ones, that Charles
died at 8pm PT. He will be missed.

What I remember, by Wynn Harris

What, where, who??? Don who?

Only kidding.

Hanging out with a bunch of P2ers for the first time, really, and having a
blast. For a bunch of twang geeks, we sure know how to have a good
freakin' time!

Oh and then there was the music.

Hadacol, Jim Roll, Continental Drifters, Chip Robinson solo, Paul Burch,
Silos, jesus, there was so much and so little time...

CISCO, Cisco, Cisco, Beaver Nelson, Hazledine - boy that ND party rocked,
Alejandro at the Taco Express, the Yard Dog rules! Ted Roddy at the Broken
Spoke, the Doolittle party with Say ZUZU and Todd Thibaud, the Blueground
Undergrass show at Maggie Mae's.

dissapointments: Freakwater, bad room and Reckless Kelly at the AMA -was
Steve Earle there? I don't think so.

However, my all time favorite gig was the Brooders. They rule It's
good to see Randy and Michael back on stage.

BTW, smilin' Jim, you rock too and throw a GREAT party! You'll never be
able to get out of it now.g

More bad news....

1999-03-02 Thread Wynn Harris

I'm loving being back *lurking*, but I'm really beginning to hate all this
bad news.
Please pray, dance, ritualize, shout, drink - do whatever healing thang you
do to help this guy get well. Not only is he a great guitar player, IMHO,
but a good friend and sweet, sweet person.

Thanks!

Hey bluegrass fans:

The word from the Boulder, Colorado area is that Hot Rize member
Charles Sawtelle is in the hospital, locked in a terrible
struggle with leukemia. It sounds pretty serious, from what I've
heard. Healing vibes sent in the direction of Mr. Sawtelle sure
could not hurt.

On the subject of last nights music spectacle:

one of my dj's told me she could only get through 20 minutes of the
Grammyz and turned to VH1 where Johnny Rotten was talkin about how
there are no real celebrities left in the world and he was the only one!
:-) No ego there! Which show was better?

There is a small bookstore in Atlanta called Acapella Books that carries it.
They are located on Euclid Avenue in the Little Five Points area. Not sure if
they have a website, but you could call information and get the # . The
owner's name is Frank, and he is a great guy.

My sister just called and there aren't any there, only books. I guess you
can special order it, but can't you do that from anywhere?

Is Son Volt conspicuously absent OR is this only a partial listing? This
does look like a partial listing, but I'm sure someone out there knows..

Re: GrooveGrass

Jeff Wall said:

5. The stated purpose behind Groovegrass is to introduce Bluegrass to kids
who would never otherwise hear it.

This seems to resurect an old thread regarding the lack ofpopularity and
high dollar sales in the Americana market, does it not? If
country/alt.country purists aren't crazy about this hybrid does that mean
its bad? Not having heard the album I have NO opinion, but I did have a
conversation with Jerry Douglas (the best dobro in the world IMHO and
secretary or treasurer of IBMA) this summer regarding getting *young*
people into bluegrass etc. He pondered that it would be great to get Phish
or some such band popular with the *kids* to play at the IBMA conference to
attract a larger crowd.

This seems like a good idea to me-- IF you believe that it will trickle
down (sorry for the Reagan-ism) and translate into more record sales. And
that you believe record sales are the bottom line.

What do ya'll think of efforts like this to spread the word?

I selfishly would fear the loss of the intimate crowds at festivals!g
