RE: Criminally Underappreciated Albums

1999-04-18 Thread musicdirector

O.K., just the other day I saw a reference to the original Clem Snide, i.e.
where the band got its name, but now I can't remember what it was. Help!

I'm coming off of a 10-day pledge drive -- my longest night of sleep was 7
hours and that was only because I slept through my 4 a.m. alarm -- so I am
BRAIN DEAD!

Clem Snide - You Were a Diamond - It just came out a few months ago, its
amazing, no one is even reviewing it.

it was reviewed in No Depression by yours truly, july/august 1998 issue #16.
i've seen a couple other reviews since then, but i'm also surprised it
hasn't
spun more people's heads around.

Rufus Wainwright

1999-03-13 Thread musicdirector

I'd say that Rufus Wainwright's debut has only sold 35,000 copies so far
because it doesn't sound like anything else on the market right now. We
filed the cd in rock at Vintage Vinyl but I'd be hard pressed to name an
album that rocks less. Folk/Country/Americana is clearly the wrong place,
though, if he were filed with the McGarrigles a few people would stumble
across him. I thought about putting him in Pop Vocals but I don't think
people looking for Rufus are going to look for him along side Frank Sinatra
and Tony Bennet. KDHX has Rufus filed as rock, as well, a decision made
before I started, by the way.

How'd Dreamworks manage to spend a million bucks on making Rufus' album?
What was Van Dyke Park's fee?

SXSW wristbands

1999-03-09 Thread musicdirector

Hello, Austinites!

I am coming down for SXSW and I have my badge and a hotel room so I'm hooked
up. However, I just got a call from someone I work with who has decided to
travel down with a band but needs a wristband. How much are they this year?
Are they still available? Does anyone want to be the middleman in this deal?

Last year, 3 of us went down and bought wristbands the first day of S

SXSW Wristbands

1999-03-09 Thread musicdirector

Hello, Austinites!

I have some friends asking about the current availability of SXSW
wristbands. Are they still on sale? How much? Does anyone want to be the
middleman on a wristband purchase?

I have my registration, etc., already so I'm set. Last year we had no
trouble in picking up wristbands at Waterloo (and on the 2nd on 3rd days we
saw plenty of flyers from people trying to get rid of wristbands).

Anyway, any help would be most appreciated! Thanks.
