Somebody (John Flippo?) wrote to the list yesterday asking if anybody
was going to this show tonight. It looks like I am. Write me off-list if
you're still thinking about going.

alcohol-laden 24-proof "patent medicine" that sponsored Hank
   * Williams's radio show in the 1940s the production by fellow

 Whitney of the Skeletons.

Reading this post and listening to twancast radio and whaddyaknow? On comes
Hadacol, whose disc I picked up last week mostly because of the
aforementioned Mr Whitney's involvement. Not bad, not bad.

Hadacol was one of the real surprises for me at SXSW. Twangy, rocking,
energetic, above average songs, connecting with the audience. They won that
crowd over. I had plan to stay for a few songs, but got sucked into the
vortex of fun.

I dunno, JeffMoM and Mr. Soron like it, but I kinda thought it was too much of
a generic ND/Tweedy knock off. Of course that was only one listen. Then again,
in my world, one complete mostly-attentive listen is a big friggin deal.

You've got ADD when it comes to music. Like I said, it took more than one
song, jaded rock crit guy, to get my attention. One of the highlights of SXSW.

Hadacol is a Kansas City quartet named after the
alcohol-laden 24-proof "patent medicine" that sponsored Hank
   * Williams's radio show in the 1940s. Like most alternative-country
acts, Hadacol mixes twangy guitars, drawling vocals and a thumping
rhythm in a manner that sounds conversational and nervously urgent at
the same time. Unlike most of its genre colleagues, however, Hadacol's
songwriters -- brothers Fred and Greg Wickham -- know how to boil the
usual Americana themes down to an ear-grabbing chorus melody and a
stick-in-the-mind aphorism. As a result, the band's debut album,
"Better Than This," rises above the cluttered landscape of
 "insurgent-country" discs.
The two singer-guitarist Wickham brothers write songs
separately but with a similar sensibility and standard of quality.
Fred, for example, wrote the title tune, which refuses to whine about
trailer-park life but in fact celebrates it in a rousing chorus. Even
better is his "What You Wanted," an organ-fueled, Dylanesque
folk-rocker about living with the consequences of your decisions. Greg
wrote "Cheap Liquor," which sums up the limitations of the bar-band
life in the priceless line, "All this barroom smoke feels like a
girlfriend's arms." Giving all the songs the clarity of a
three-minute, 1950s single is the production by fellow Missourian Lou
 Whitney of the Skeletons.

Yes. Marie and I saw them here in Nashville weekend before last. We loved
them. Really nice guys, too. Small crowd though, which sucked since they
drove all the way down here just for this show. I would definately
recommend them live.

I only hear D. Boon in the way they sing the first line of Somebody Lied.
The vocals strain just like D. used to...love that stuff. Love this album
too...reminds me of some sort of BoRox/Jayhawks mix--ballsy mostly
mid-tempo rockers. In fact, so far I like it better than the Damnations
album, which I really do enjoy--particularly the harmonies. But I'm
bugged by the lack of instrumental flair on the Damnations record...seems
like the songs are completely vocally oriented. Once the vocals end, so
does the song, often within seconds...which is OK, just doesn't feel like
a **band**. I bet they're a lot better live.

Hadacol

1999-02-21 Thread marie arsenault

I saw Hadacol last night here in Nashville. It was a sadly
unattended show. I have no doubt in my mind that Ronni
and I were the only ones there to see Hadacol.

I was really impressed. It's kind of refreshing to hear
a little keyboard mixed with your alt-country.
They are good players who write good songs. My initial
impression of the disc was that it was just a rung
above standard generic alt-country with a few stand-out
tracks. But, the more I listened to it, the more I dug it.
I liked them even better live. They put a bit of a twist
on things (a song about a recently deceased father done
as a polka. It really was touching.). I'm guessing they
have some punk rock roots. Does anyone else hear
strains of the Minutemen in Hadacol? There was something
vaguely familiar about the vocals. I thought that it might be X,
but then it hit me - D Boone. Am I crazy? Does anyone else
hear it?

Anyway, I recommend seeing them. I had a great time at their show.

Mr. Curry says:
Oh...lastly, a "You HEard It Here First".be on the lookout for an
incredibly talented young singer-songwriter, Jason White. He sung two
songs at the Donald Lindley benefit and he basically left the audience
floored. I'm talking about an audience full of Nashville cats.

How timely. Jason White and Hadacol are playing the Sutler in Nashville
this Saturday night. I'd recommend seeing both. If anyone from the area is
planning on being there, give me a holler. It would be nice to say hi!

Hadacol questions comments

1999-02-08 Thread Barry Mazor

So I picked up that new Hadacol CD on the recommendations of several around
here who are often to be much trusted, and I'm pretty much impressed.

This is pretty straightahead alt.country in the sense most people mean it
most of the time whatever that is, played and sung pretty well. As maybe
befits an album produced by the Skeleton's Lou Whitney, the sound crosses
lines in a sort of encyclopedia of styles liked around here. The sound
influences are fairly obvious--Steve Earle (but of course; nice duo with
Cisco)..John Prine, Alejandro Escovedo, somea Green on Red I think, some
rockabilly, even post-Like a Rolling Stone style La Bamba changes...it all
comes together pretty effectively, though it would be hard to say something
clearly their own has turned up in the process.

Now I'm wondering--what were these guys playing befoire. I understand is a
successor band to one some of our members from the Missouri/Kansas
metroplex area referred to now and then--Big Iron.
(Guess they dropped that name cause Heavay Metal is one thing they're
not, and they're not on the Old 97s first label either!) So what'd that
ol' band sound like--and is any part of that some part of this?

Barry M.
(Gotta use the last initial since I noticved another Barry on the premises
today!)

HADACOL

1999-02-05 Thread some girl

Don, David, and others,
Thank you for the recommendations! I ran out last night and bought
Hadacol’s "Better Than This" (the first store I went to was actually
sold out, that really peeked my attention), it is fabulous! Since then I
have listened to it about six more times, and I am still blown away! I
also checked out their web site, and I must say, they’re not hard to
look at either. Definitely on my list of must sees at SXSW, I bet they
can really put on a show!
Thanks again.
