Not that that would be a bad thread either.

Personally, I'll go for Jesse Taylor. All the other names mentioned

Criteria? We don't need no stinkin criteria!! g

If we're going to make this official, how about this: The Sideperson of the
Decade (SOTD) is the musician who has appeared in a supporting role for
multiple P2-related artists or groups during the years 1990 through 1999.
The SOTD should be a musician best known for supporting roles as opposed to
a solo artist who primarily makes albums under his or her own name but
occassionally sits in with others.

By this criteria, musicians like the aforementioned Max Johnston, Lloyd
Maines, Greg Leist, and Benmont Tench would be eligible. Steve Earle (who
has done side work for Cheri Knight and Bap Kennedy but is best known for
his own records) would not.

How's that sound?

Anybody want to actually keep score? g

list without too much debate I should think.

think David Lindley might be in the running as well.

Sorry to be dense about this g, but are you talking about studio
musicians, or folks who have toured with various acts, or both? If the idea
is to include the former, exclusively or otherwise, then it seems to me
you'd have to start with Paul Franklin, Brent Mason, Stuart Duncan and maybe
Rob Hajacos.

Ok, I'll keep score for an official Top 10. Use the criteria I suggested
earlier, or make up your own. The basic question: Name the Top 10
Sidepersons of the 1990s. Let's give this a week. I'll take submission up
through Monday the 19th.

I'd think the criteria would be only that we're *not* talking a
"front" person. So either studio or touring musicians who contribute
to the sound and result but aren't the featured performers.

So Vince Gill wouldn't qualify, even though he's a top-rate player,
whereas Pete Anderson or Gurf Morlix would g.

Yep. Vince Gill, Steve Earle, Jon Langford Ricky Skaggs wouldn't
qualify. Does Buddy Miller qualify, or do his efforts as frontman
disqualify him? I'd exclude him, but it's a tough choice. Do Joey
Burns and John Convertino count, or do their Calexico efforts disqualify
them? I dunno.

As for a list, a few who haven't been mentioned yet that I'd take include:

Bruce Kaphan
Steve Goulding
Kenny Blevins
Tom Ray
Jim Keltner
Eric Heywood
Lisa Mednick
Erin Snyder (bassist to a billion Pittsburgh twang bands, and a fine
chef to boot!)

I seem to be biased towards steel players and drummers. Maines would
rank at the top of any list I'd make.

Okay, if y'all won't consider Linda McCartney, I will withdraw the submission
in favor of a real one: Jon Brion. The man is all over so many albums, both
as a producer and as a musician (Grant Lee Buffalo, Aimee Mann, Eels,
Wallflowers, Fiona Apple, Robyn Hitchcock, Sam Phillips, Mary Lou Lord,
Elliott Smith... just to name a few of *dozens* of noteworthy artists he's
worked with in the 90s), playing just about every instrument conceivable,
from drums to calliope to vibraphone to optigon. Truly remarkable if you ask
me. I can't even think of another session/side guy that comes close to
approximating the resume he's amassed in recent years. Plus, the man in
incredibly inventive. Need more proof, go to

I rest my case.

Phew... Good, you got me worried there. g I'm with you. I believe they
are both absolutely essential to both Dwight and Lucinda's sound
respectively... Both artists would be hard pressed to find players with
such taste and with such affinity for the aesthetic of their songs...

Yep, totally agree with you on that last statement... Both are indeed
extraordinary players...

front person, their "side" work is so remarkable that both have
plenty of fans, a reputation of their own, etc...

I'd even argue that Dwight's not entirely "Dwight" without Anderson
and that Gurf was a crucial aspect of those Lucinda albums, etc...
