Keyboard Source

2001-07-15 Thread ZITAOHE

Hi all,
Several of my non Japanese friends and myself are looking to replace the
Japanese keyboards on our 5300 and 500 series

Does anyone know a source or have an idea how much they would cost?

A friend will be visiting the Napa Valley area from the 18-22 July so I am
hoping she could then bring them back with her so we can avoid shipping to
Japan

The English keyboards I need are for a 190/5300 and the 500 series. Thanks
in advance.

Zita

5300 REA

2001-07-15 Thread ZITAOHE

Hi all,

This is kind of a gripe and a favor to ask.

I have a PB 5300 I recently bought second hand here in Tokyo.

Unfortunately the screen is starting to separate at the seams and some
plastic bits crumbled out.

Having heard about the Apple Repair extension program on the list and
looked it up on the TIL.

The serial number on my powerbook would seem to qualify it for the repair
program.

The Apple Authorized repair shop I brought it to said it would cost the
equivalent of 25000 yen (over $200) to change the screen casing.

Called the English speaking section of Apple. The girl I spoke to didn't
know about the REA program but to her credit she looked up the TIL article I
mentioned and called me back

She said Apple Japan is slightly different company from190/ 5300.

Another friend with a 5300 paid for several repairs after her warranty
expired. She now has a broken track pad they want to charge her around $100
to replace.

Has anyone from overseas run their non US bought 5300's through the free REA
program?

Or is there someone in the US on the list kind enough to call the
1-800-SOS-APPL number to ask if our serial numbers qualify?

They are SG 541 5H4 6TX and SG 539 2QG 6TX.

Thanks alot in advance.
Zita

Actually my PB 520 has it on it, I can _TRY_ and e-mail it to you, not sure
how, but I'm working on it. It is actually a free standing PROGRAM, which I
have never gotten to work.

The REA is worldwide. Be polite but annoy Apple Japan about it. If no
joy, start mailing Apple HQ in US about it.
It works in Australia & NZ and elsewhere (which, to this point, are not
part of the US), so I don't see why Apple would suddenly decide to renege
upon its pledges merely because the 'Book changed nationality once it got
off the boat at Hiroshima.

The trackpad is usually replaced under the REA (always when broken) by
the 'Improved Trackpad' (Rev.2.0, commonly known as, although it is not
tappable). The trackpad button is ALWAYS replaced, regardless of whether
it is broken or not.

I actually have one sitting here doing nothing. You're welcome to it

Re: 5300 REA

2001-07-15 Thread Somerset County Computer, Inc.

I just sent in a 5300 for a client.
The item to watch for is date stamp made inside the battery compartment. If
your machine has one, then it has already passed through the REA program and
can not go the second time.
Apple will send an Airborne Overnight Laptop package to your address (US)
for free with Call Tag and return shipping airway bill, so the whole process
is free.

This plastics damage may not be covered in the program, as it is user wear
and tear. The REA program for the model 5300/190 addresses the logic board
power jack problem and one or two other related problems. I'm not sure on
this one so be careful. I've heard stories second hand that the REA goes all
the way and they do the extra little things (freebies) too.

Hope this helps.
Ed in NJ.

New 540c

2001-07-15 Thread Oliphant Johannes

Hi,

I am brandnew to macintosh and living in Kuwait where
it's very difficult to get the installation
software.I've purshused a 2nd hand 540c powerbook
which is locked by norton disklock - password required
for access. It's got a 350MB hard drive, 36MB ram,
33MHZ speed and a stiffy drive (no cdrom):

1. Is there any way to gain access to the hard drive -
bypass the lock?
2. If not, where can I download boot floppy disk
images already in a proper format to boot up from for
re-installation? (I've got a windows NT PC connected
to the internet)
3. Can I download linux boot images for floppy disk
somewhere in the correct format?

Thanks

Type of PowerBooks

2001-07-15 Thread Eric Schwarz

I'm just curious. What kind of PowerBooks do most people on this list use?
I remember awhile back when I was on the compact.macs list they did
something like this and everyone responded what kind of compact Macs they
had.

So, I'm asking: What kind of PowerBook(s) do you have?
I've seen a lot of postings abaout 1400s & 170s, and I know there won't be
that many Duos or 2400s since they have their own list.

I have a PowerBook 540c, a PowerBook 520, and a PowerBook 170.

A stupid question

Is it possible (with some kind of workaround) to get play-through to work on
PowerBook 500s? I want to record something, but have to always use my
Quadra, because the 540c doesn't have play-through.

Thanks,

Just for giggles, I have a FrankenBook (PB1400 with bus overclock and
other mods soon).
A PB520c just about fully assembled, and another 520C in parts. I
also have a PB1400 chassis with video card I use for testing purposes.

I also have about 5 Duos in various configs, that I am modifying for
sale later.

Try depressing the "shift" key while the machine is booting. The start-up
screen should say, "Welcome to Macintosh, Extensions Off." This is the
equivalent of "safe mode" on the PC.

Dunno about that, though an e-mail to Symantec's support or a perusal of their
FAQ might help in that regard.

You can get floppy disks for installation at Apple's web site for System
7.5.5.

Nope! There is no unix (afaik) that supports the 540 due to the oddball
68lc040 chip in it. The only 68k unix that is available is one of the bsd
clones, either netbsd or freebsd.

No, I'm not complaining about the starting bid. I offered you some
processor cards for 5xx & RAM, as well as basically all the electronic parts
(drives, boards, screen, etc) for a 520, and you said you had enough RAM &
processor cards, and what you needed was plastics. You then told me this in
a p-email:

>> I'll let you know a price when I get it together tomorrow at some point.
So I figured all was well. I had about $20-$25 that I was willing to spend
on that. I was just waiting on your reply for what that price was after you
got it together.

> You talked like you had all sorts of Powerbook 500 series parts to trade,

All sorts? Yeah - I had enough to build a whole damn 520 (except the
plastics that you desperately wanted were kinda beat up)...

I also did offer you cash, too - not a specific amount, because I wanted you
to see what you thought it was worth.

> Wah, everybody hates me.
No, just a little ticked. I (as well as a few other people who responded to
my post have boycotted eBay because of how a lot of older Mac stuff sells
for way more than what its worth & that some of it is usually not that great
compared with private sales (like LEM-Swap). I'm sorry, but I haven't used
eBay since April 2000 - I signed up for it that March.

I (as well as others) have stuck with LEMSwap instead because most things
are sold for fair prices, and there's no fighting for stuff (like on eBay)
by who can pay the most gets it. So, now the dock is out of reach for a lot
of "us" that were interested in it...

Re: BookEndz 500?

2001-07-15 Thread Eric Schwarz

One more thing before my rant is done:

I don't think anyone (at least on here) would see spending $40 on the 'Buy
it Now' when 540c usually sell for around $50 or less. I could get ANOTHER
540c and leave all my desktop stuff plugged in there, and take the other
540c with me out on the road...

Oh, and to help all the 500 series users wanting batteries:

I mean, for they could take that $40 and get a refurbished battery for their
500 from Midwest Mac (http://midwestmac.com). I bought one back in December
and it came with a 90-day warranty. It works quite well still and I get
about 1:15 out of it with heavy use on my color 540c with the brightness
all-the-way on. I'm not sure if they still have these batteries, but it's
worth a look.

Yeah - don't want to drill any of those little components. I heard one guy

Starting CD with "c" key on 1400?

2001-07-15 Thread Karl Gerlach

I am carrying on a rather silly conversation with someone on the Apple discussion
postings. My 1400cs/166 started from day one by using the "c" key for the CD, although
even the original software disk (OS 8) said to use the "finger dance" (which I use to
start from a ZIP disk when I need to). This machine must have been one of the last
ones to ship to Germany, since they were discontinued the next month. The ROM is
$77D.32F3. This fellow seems to be fascinated by my 1400's ability to do this, since
1400's are not "supposed" to have this feature. So what about yours?

BTW, did my warning about the Sonnet upgrade cards make it to the list? I was having a
lot of difficulties (thanks to Sonnet and German OS 8.6, who don't like each other at
all!) and the mail may have been lost in cyberspace, though there was one digest I
don't think I ever got (thanks to the same difficulties).

For the record, 1400cs/333MHz Sonnet/20GB Travelstar/64 MB RAM. And yes, I wish I had
waited to buy a new iceBook.

I guess its possible that the late ROM version will boot off of the
CD using the C key, while the early ROM version does not. You have
the 166 MHz model, so you have the late ROM version.

If you can't handle Ebay, at least the dock is up there for all of the

reasons you quoted for Ebay, so stalemate.

We had a work- study student use my name/company name on the SWAP list.
He's scheduled for court next month. Ironically, he had someone burn him for
a fan for a LC520 all-in-one unit. So, your world there is not so peachy

Does any body have a dead zip drive?

2001-07-15 Thread Pete LeDoux

Does anybody have a dead zip drive that fits inside a powerbook 5300/ 1400/
190/ 3400 series powerbooks. I have a zip drive that does not have a case
that allows me to plug it into my powerbook 190cs. Any suggestions or does
anybody have or knows where I can find the module casing for an internal zip
drive or dead zip drive module that I can buy?

Thanks,

The PB500 series uses a magnesium stiffener component.

Magnesium should *never* be altered ... by drilling, or by other means ... so
as to alter its protective coating.

If I wanted to know about ebay listings, I would go to ebay. If you
posted something here fishing for prices, you should have just gone
to ebay to start with. There is enough "I just listed this on ebay"
in the regular Usenet groups without getting it emailed to me by this
list.
It was an unethical shot to post that you had something on this
group to "help" someone looking for it and then turn around and ebay
it. Your original reply to this group indicated you didn't place much
value on it. The ongoing argument you are perpetuating indicates that
you think you are being wronged or are in a position of superior
moral insight. Get over it. You posted a reply to a request. Either
follow through or go away.
Luckily enough, Eudora and my news program both allow me to filter
out people who post FA ads.

List Netiquette

2001-07-15 Thread Dan Knight

I updated the Netiquette page this morning to address some recent issues
involving signatures, name calling, vulgarity, perceived threats, and
when it's appropriate to mention an auction on the list. Some of these
are good general netiquette guidelines; others are specific to the Low
End Mac family of email lists.

Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with this information.

Thanks!

Dan the listmom

updated 2001:07:15

There are informal rules of the Internet which are termed netiquette to
help people use proper etiquette within this form of communication. Some
examples of poor netiquette are not signing messages, unsubscribing to
the posting address instead of the administrative address, or TYPING IN
ALL CAPS (which is considered yelling). This is a dynamic environment and
netiquette is changing rapidly.

I can't say it much better than this: "...my goal here is to educate
people who participate in mailing lists, since only by improving our list
manners will mailing lists continue to become increasingly pleasant and
useful." (Adam C. Engst, TidBITS #480.)

Some informal rules for the Low End Mac family of mail lists:

Remember that replies automatically go to the list, not the just the
person who posted the message. You need to change the to: address to
respond to an individual. (Some other lists, such as Mac-Mgrs and our
Swap list, work just the opposite way. On those lists, a reply goes to
the original sender by default, not to the list.)

Never send attachments to the list. An attachment may contain a virus,
may be in a format others cannot use, may not make it through some mail
gateways, makes the message bigger, and will bog down both the list
server and the mail server.

- Many of today's email programs send styled text attachments by default.
You must turn HTML and other styled text off to post to the list (see
#3).

- Large enough attachments or messages will be rejected. (I've set a
ceiling
  of 10 KB per posting.)

- Instead of sending an attachment to the list, offer to email it
directly
  to those who request it.

Don't send styled text or HTML files; only send plain text. Style text
may or may not come through as an attachment, but it is very difficult to
read in a plain text email client. Styled text is especially troublesome
in digests. The list server is set to reject anything except plain text.
(I routinely throw out any email I receive that comes in only as an
attachment -- if you can't take the time to send it as plain text, I
won't take the time to read it.)

Style your posting -- ASCII style.

- Put a blank line between paragraphs.

- Put a blank line between what you are quoting and what you are writing.

- Clearly mark quoted sections. Most email programs do this by putting
">"
or "> " in front of each line of quoted material.

Don't use PGP encryption on your messages. A lot of people (probably
most) can't even use it.

Please quote only the relevant portion of messages you respond to -- and
please quote some of the original message so others know what you're
responding to.

"You shouldn't have to wade through gobs of extraneous stuff to get to
the meat of the message. You should include just enough to provide a
context for the message and no more. (Peter Kimble, my high school CS
teacher, now gives his students the rule of thumb that at least half of
the lines in an email message should be their own.) If you must include
the whole message that you are replying to, include it after your
response." (From "A Beginner's Guide to Effective Email", Kaitlin Duck
Sherwood <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
.)

"Quoting sparingly does require manual work, since most email programs
automatically quote the original message in replies. But failing to edit
the original wastes everyone's time and bandwidth." (Adam C. Engst,
TidBITS #480.)

Please keep "me too" messages off the list; these are best sent
privately, if at all.

Let sleeping threads lie. If it's been over a week since the last posting
in a thread, consider it dead and buried.

When asking a question, please list relevant information regarding
hardware, software, and version of the Mac OS involved.

Change the subject line when the subject of the thread changes.

When responding to a digest post, be sure to change the subject to match
that of the original message. The list server is set to reject replies to
the digest otherwise.

You can wander into other Mac-related topics, but try to limit discussion
to Mac-related topics (politics, religion, and a lot of other things are
off topic as far as Mac lists are concerned). Always treat others
courteously.

Signature lines

- Please keep your signature concise. Six lines or less is best.

- Many email clients wrap text at 80 characters, so check that your
signature won't wrap badly because of this.

- Taglines should be clearly separated from the body of the email and
should
  come a

Re: Type of PowerBooks

2001-07-15 Thread Andrew Kershaw

I've got (in order of purchase):
PowerBook G3 Series (Wallstreet II)
PowerBook Duo 230
PowerBook 5300cs

The Wallstreet is a clear winner for most used computer that I own (I've got
8 other Macs in various states of usability) making it what I use for just
about _everything_. Being mobile is just too cool ;-)

The 5300 is slowly getting modified into a tablet case.

The Duo 230 has its uses too - I love that passive matrix screen - you can
see it in bright sunlight without a backlight! Very handy on hot summer
days. ;-)

Peace,
Drew

I just bought a PB 5300cs less than 24 hours ago :-) So much to
check out yet, busily downloading the TIL from Apple. I asked the
seller about the Repair Program but he knew nothing about it. He's at
least the third person to have this machine so that's no surprise.
According to the Apple site, I should have been able to find the
serial number (and possible verification that the Powerbook had
undergone the repair) on the underside of the computer.
Unfortunately, if the serial number was a sticker, it's long gone -
not even any stickiness left where I would assume that a sticker
might have gone. I've gone into the System Pofiler but don't see
anything there either.

Any other thoughts on how I might find a serial number so I can
verify if the computer qualifies or if it's already been done? I've
just done the doubleclick on the Trackpad - nada, so if that's not
been replaced with a new and improved version, it's a pretty good
indication that the computer has NOT been through the REA?

Thanks.

That's not *entirely* accurate. You might, emphasis on might, have a
specific version of the LC040 that is not damaged. Many LC040s were flawed
in such a way that makes FPU emulation impossible, even under MacOS
(SoftwareFPU, for example). Second, the 500 series ADB chips have only
recently become supported by m68k Linux, using the 2.4.1 kernels. Previously
you would have needed a serial terminal to actually control the machine. The

Offlist Please

2001-07-15 Thread Karl Gerlach

> Don't forget to wipe and flush before you leave the bathroom.
Ya left off about washing hands! Nobody wants to get E Coli. :-P

Since this particular thread has reached such puerile level, it is well past time to
take it offlist. It should have been there all along.

The Endz?

2001-07-15 Thread Eric Schwarz

My final thought: (to whom it may concern)
I just want to say a few things to complete this whole mess -

First of all, this whole thing wasn't about,"Oh no, I didn't get the
BookEndz, I'm gonna go cry. Waa waa waa." It was about ethics. It was
more or less you saying, "Screw you" to me.

> You could have kept it off list but you like to see yourself write, so I've
> continued for your pleasure.
Yeah, but I found out about the whole auction on the list, rather than that
person keeping it off list. No, I don't like to see myself 'right', but I'm
trying to get a point across to that person, and they totally missed it.

> I'm pulling off this list anyway, so enjoy.
Enjoy what? A victory? No. You don't have to leave the list. There are a
lot of us on these lists with opinions, and this is more or less a way to
express them.

Lastly, I want to apologize to everyone who had to put up with this ongoing
crap. I know there are a lot of you on the list who had some stuff to say,
but for those of you who could care less, sorry for taking up your
bandwidth.

Sorry,
Eric

PowerBook 5300c vs. 1400c.

2001-07-15 Thread Mousehurd

OK, in a couple of months I am going to get another PowerBook (will be my
4th). Financially speaking, it's going to be between a 5300c or a 1400c. I
don't really care if either is only the 117MHz model, as I only run older
software, and I should point out that my main Mac is the Power Macintosh
7100/80, which I am writing this on at this very moment! I am notsaying that
I wouldn't like something faster (I wish i could get a Pismo, the best
looking PB I've seen!), just that I really don't need it to be that fast.
117MHz should be fine, so with the CPU issue out of the way, which machine is
a better deal? I know the 1400 has the CD ROM option, but I have an Apple
external CD ROM drive, so that's not critical either. I also know about the
5300's history and Apple's REA program. What I really want to know is, for
the $300-$400 I can expect to spend, which is better? Just looking for some
input...

Just one: a PowerBook 190cs.
Waiting on a cable to plug it in to a CDROM drive, has no OS on it at the
moment.
I have seen a lot of people saying that the 190/5300 don't have a "tappable"
trackpad. Umm, mine does... Before I erased the HD, there was a contol panel
(System 7.5.5) that allowed it to be turned on. I found it annoying,
however, so I shut it off.
I also noticed someone mentioning a zip drive that fits into the floppy
drive bay. Neat! what else'll fit in there?

Major Problems for some 1400's with Sonnet Upgrade

2001-07-15 Thread Karl Gerlach

After a casual stroll through the archives, I noticed that my post about the Sonnet
upgrade processor did not make it to the list, precisely because of the problems I was
having with the processor. As a last resort, I emailed Sonnet. The result: about 10%
(so their figure) of 1400's with some versions of OS 8.6, 9.0, and 9.0.4 will
experience significant problems, especially with sounds freezing the display, strange
finder and directory errors, etc. German OS 8.6 apparently is one of the offenders.
The solution is to stay with 8.5 or upgrade to 9.1. This occurs with any processor
upgrade, not just Sonnet. So now I have 9.1 trimmed down to closely resemble 8.6 as
possible, but it still eats 5MB more RAM than 8.6. But at least my computer is
functioning again properly, after two weeks of clean installs, running Norton,
TechTools, etc. until I was blue in the face...

At the same time, I was looking for the postings about soldering some "crystals" to
the Mobo to get the 1400 to recognize more RAMor am I just imagining having read
such a thing?

Troublesome PB 5300 (long)

2001-07-15 Thread Mark Romberg

First, the technical: 24MB RAM, 750 MB HD, 10.4 in. active LCD, OS 8.1,
broken floppy drive. For about a year, it has been starting up unreliably:
it will boot to the Mac OS/Welcome to Macintosh screen, begin to load the
OS, and freeze once the progress bar has progressed about a quarter inch.
Rebooting doesn’t help. Booting without extensions doesn’t help. Zapping
the PRAM doesn’t help. Repairing the disk doesn’t help. The kick is this:
sometimes it boots fine. It will randomly decide to boot up without a
hitch(usually to the tune of me praying desperately that it will boot this
time because of that important whatever). The floppy drive used to work,
and I could boot off a Disk Tools PPC disk with that. I also copied the
Disk Tools’ System Folder to a 16 MB CompactFlash card. When the floppy
drive decided to give up the ghost, I used the CF card to boot. Eventually
I came up with an idea that would have been brilliant had I thought of it
months before: scan it with Tech Tool. TT found a damaged/corrupted system
file. That’s easy to deal with, I thought, I’ll do a fresh install off the
8.1 CD. I proceeded to do so with an external CD-Rom drive, and all went
well. It even booted OK after that–twice. I then had the
far-less-brilliant idea of copying the System Folder off the hard disk onto
the CF card. I had suspected the hard disk for some time, and thought maybe
a corrupted disk sector containing part of a system file might be the
problem. As you can guess, I now have no functional startup media at all.
Thus, my question: how to install an earlier OS than 8.1, since multiple
clean installs haven’t remedied the problem, without a floppy. Is there any
type of external SCSI drive that is bootable without a driver?

You can order oscillator crystals no overclock the bus and CPU, and
sometime ago someone mentioned something about SMT work to enable
more RAM, but that is a rumor, I think.

Re: Type of PowerBooks

2001-07-15 Thread Chris Waldrip

I'm currently using a 466Mhz WallStreet PDQ, 256MB Ram, 18GB Toshiba Drive.
Option VST SuperDisk drive and NewerTech FireWire PC Card. Nice little
machine, but the hinge is finally going out on me.

My replacement is a Lombard which is in the shop for some component level
repairs. But since it was free (long story) the few hundred to get it
working is a still a good deal.

My first PB was a 170, then a 5300, a 1400, and a 3400. The 5300 was the
most problematic with it's AC Adaptor connection going out on me twice!

Re: Major Problems for some 1400's with Sonnet Upgrade

2001-07-15 Thread Judy Perry

Hmm

I recently upgraded my 1400 with a Sonnet G3 and I believe was running
8.6. I did not experience any problems. Of course, shortly after
upgrading, I experienced the tragic impact adjustment and now can't do
anything at all with my 1400 as the upgrade reset my appletalk connection
and I can't even pull up the drive on my ethernet network as a result

:(

Mark:

Your intial description sounds like the problems I was having with a 3400/200
w/32 mb RAM. It would randomly boot ok and then randomly freeze. I traced the
problem to a bad RAM module. I replaced the module, and it works fine all the time
now.

Re: 5300 REA

IIRC one of the main repair items of the REA is plastics! and IIRC the bezel
for the screen, but definately on the mobo case. The power plug being the
more popular reason for the repairs.

I'd follow Remy's comment and politely bug Apple/Japan. The REA ends about
June 2002.

There's my daughter's PB160, my old main laptop a PB 180 and my new
main laptop, a PB5300.

I had been looking on e-bay for a PB540c but realized after a while
that I really needed a PPC machine. I've never been a fan of
processor upgrades other than daughterboard swaps so I started
looking at native PPC machine. I didn't really want to spend a lot
on this machine as I plan on getting an iBook or such. The PB5300
seemed the right mix for my needs. It even does iTunes reasonably
well (as long as iTunes is the only thing active).
