Ethernet for 2300c

2001-09-05 Thread tbrock

Is it possible to connect a 2300c to our school's network. The unit I'm
getting has a duo dock with the modem pass through only. Thanks for your
reply.

Re: New PowerBook User

2001-09-05 Thread Remy Davison

Welcome Joey.
Seriously.

I guess it's a 165c you're talking about, yes? If you find yourself any
old Mac monitor (try GoodWill or something) plus a cheap PB monitor
adaptor, you can use the 165c, regardless of the screen.

You can then network the 190 and 165 using a standard mini-DIN8 (Mac
serial/printer cable) which costs about $5. Then exchange data via file
sharing.

It's better to replace the floppy; the 190 modules can be replaced by
5300, 3400 or Kanga G3 floppy modules. These are pretty widely available
from places like smalldog.com and powerbookguy.com. Also try pbparts.com
Probably $20-25? for a new floppy. Someone on this list may have spare.

Cheers,

RD

PB 1400 Question for Mad Dog

2001-09-05 Thread John McGibney

I went to your page for more info only the Apple links are no longer vaild
could you explain in more detail what the following patches do? and are they
necessary with Os 8.5 or above, or were they rolled into the install CD that
came with the last batch of 1400S?

There are a few files from Apple associated with the PB1400 that implement
small bugfixes:

PMU fix (fixes problems using the brightness and contrast buttons):
 http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/artnum/n10764

PB 1400 ATA Flash Extension (fixes some problems with PCMCIA cards):

No such powerbook as a 175c, not even a 175 anything. How about a
165c or 180c, or a Duo 270c. In any case, the floppy drives aren't
interchangeable with a 190 (AFAIK) but should be the same as a 5300.
The orange blotches sound like a 165 display I have, but it's worth
changing the display, if you can find another junker 165c or 180c (displays
are interchangeable, just different processors) on ebay. Easy to change,
BTW.

Sue,

Hmmm... I had a seemingly similar problem with my 5300. After going
through 2 or 3 batteries and a new poweradapter or two, it finally worked
itself out.

Not a pleasant thought to ponder, "How many batteries & power adapters am
I gonna need to buy before this thing finally works itself out?"

I know this probably doesn't help...

PB 5300 battery

2001-09-05 Thread Sue Mirlo

OK, I have an annoying problem. My PB 5300 doesn't like any battery, it doesn't like
to work without a power adapter. After running for about 20 minutes with battery (no
power adapter), the PB shows the message that I am running out of battery and it will
be shut down in X secunds (?). I cannot read the message because it happens in 1
second. And the PB shut down with the losing of all my open documents. This happens
with my old battery and the new one.

If I restart the PB with the power adapter, I notice that there is still about 2 hours
of batter. What is the problem with this PB? I do not think that it is a problem
with the batteries, maybe the power?

Any advise will be appreciated.

Sue

New PowerBook User

Hello All!
Just wanted to introduce myself, I am Joey
Kelley a high school student who has just come into
not one, but two PowerBooks. A 175c and a 190.
Obviously I know which is the better one, especially
considering the 175 has big orange blotches in the
screen.
A question for you all: Will the floppy drive
from the 175c fit into the 190? The 190 drive is bad,
and unless I get the ethernet card working with out
any additional drivers, I can't get anything on or off
of it as I don't have another workable mac besides the
175.
Any suggestions on this matter, and any others,
such as what are the practicle uses of a 175 with a
bad screen, or just what I can do with a 190, would be
appreciated.
  Thanks!
  cya, Joey Kelley

Chris,

Did you solve your problem?

I was checking into a different problem for myself and found some other items
that you may want to look for. They may not relate to a 1400, but someday you
may have a new Mac to use also.

I ran into an Extenstion called DVD AutoLauncher and another item with
Monitor in the name. They run in the background and are not seen by you and
me, but can tie up a port or processor cycles.

I used an app to monitor the processor cycles to find out what was running in
the background about the time of my problem, and víola! I caught the dirty
rotten extension in the act. I used PPC LoadWatcher, it is not the best, but
it gets the job done.

Hope you solved the problem earlier, but just in case,

Brent

Drew,

What you doing on this coast?

I have sent several 5300s thru the REA program for the second or third time.
But I did not send that one thru.

I need to get up in 41/2 hours and can not remember about the tappable, but I
will try to look and see if I kept anything on that this afternoon.
