Nothing in particular. The Yamaha CDRW connects to the 5300. Then
regardless of whether I'm using Jam, Toast or CD-Copy, you can play
music. Or simply using SoundApp or SoundJam playing CDs from the Yamaha.

To get pedantic, the 5300 does support audio playthrough of sorts -
through the expansion bay. The audio lines are there, but Apple never
built a 3.5" CD ROM expansion bay drive for it (for reasons obvious)..

Re: 5300 Questions

2001-10-02 Thread MacinNW

Janice ,

I'll answer your questions one at a time.

> 1. Is the Powerbook supposed to start up when the power adaptor is
>plugged into it? Mine does.

It should not. Even if it is only asleep, it should not start up when the ac
adapter is plugged in. You should have to press the space bar or another key
to awasken it.

> 2. One of the batteries (Apple) has been reconditioned with instructions

>(Panasonic) does not appear to ever charge, even when left in overnight.
>When I try battery recondition with it, the 5300 goes black, and I have

The Battery Recondition should give you a bouncing battery icon on a white
background. When the battery is completely discharged you may have a poorly
redrawn desktop until you restart, but do not unplug the ac adapter until the
battery is fully recharged.

> 3. Does anyone know of a place to download simple directions on how to
>use the GV PowerPort modem/ethernet card that came with this machine?

Start at Read thru the descriptions of the s/w
downloads you can flash up grade some cards, but read thru __carefully__!!!
IIRC you can damage your card if you use the wrong one or do not complete the
flash upgrade. Since the card was not made by the current owner of the GV
name, you will be SOL. The flash is easy, just make sure you have a good
power source.

>I would love to ethernet to my iMac, but am not sure how the card works.
>Can it be put in the slot while the machine is running?

Yes, do you have the dongle or cable. it should have a RJ-11 (phone) and a
RJ-45 (ethernet).

>Can both ports be used at once?Yes. Both PC card slots and both modem
and ethernet, if your Control Panels are set correctly.

>Can the card stay in the slot all the time without hurting the Powerbook?
I would advise against it as it creates too much heat. You'll know it when it
happens the KBand trackpad go wonkie. Do use the legs to raise up the back on
a hard surface.

IIRC it is suggested tht the GV card be used in the lower slot if posssible.

>How can I tell which way is right side up on the connector that
>goes into the card?

For lack of a better way to describe it, the pretty graphics up and the 50
(?) pin female connector in.

> 4. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good place to buy an extra
>battery?

Several people on this list will recommend pbparts.com, Dan Monk on the
powerbook list has good PRAM battery prices and fair main battery prices (for
the life of me I can not remember his URL), OWC or Smalldogs occasionally
have specials on them, or macvizions.

> 5. What kind of adaptor (i.e. what name do I look for in a catalogue?)
>would I buy to insert my SmartMedia camera card into the slot? Can these
>cards be used to store data from the Powerbook like you would a hard drive?

I think you will find more people using CompactFlash for that and if no one
here answers that one, drop me a note and I will send you the info for the
PowerList. I can't remember which list has the user that has the story on
that.

What you did not ask is which OS is best, most will agree that OS 8.1 is
where to stop, and I have gone to OS 8.6 with a max of 64Mb of RAM. It will
run 9.1 but it is not worth the memory useage.

Although, strangely, it works with some CDRWs. For years, I went around
telling people there was no audio playthrough on the 500/190/5300 - but
there is. Audio signals can be transmitted via the SCSI, provided the CD
device supports this. In this instance, I'm talking about a Yamaha CDRW
here. Most (all?) CDRWs come with audio connectors for PC sound cards,
but this is unnecessary with Macs. The 5300/190 speakers don't sound
good, but at least they work.

This is one point with which I would disagree, as the 540 also has
an active matrix screen, and is just as clear as any screen I've seen in
that range. Colour is fine, but not that necessary for a lot of uses.

Yo Todd you can find old system installer disk images through:

http://lowendmac.com/macos.shtml

and there are several sites for downloading old system installers
and enablers. I have a list of them too extensive to list here, but
if you can't find them for any reason, I can give you specific URLs

Good Luck. Save them to floppy!!! It may be impossible to get these
in a couple of years, the way things have been going. If the demand
isn't there, the site administrators might well just pack it in.

Re: Advice for Peace Corps volunteer re: used Powerbook, please

2001-10-02 Thread Matt14789

If all your friend wants to do is word processing, e-mail and occasional web
access, I would recommend the 540c. Not being a first-hand user of one (or
even ever seeing one in real life), I can't vouch that it's the ideal laptop.
But from what I've heard on this list, it appears to be a real value for the
money ($200-350?) and reliable.

Anybody wishing to correct or support me on this, feel free...

Whatever your friend gets, strive for a 'c' model (540c, 1400c, 3400c etc) -
it stands for 'active-matrix color screen'. The best PowerBook screen out
there and usually a mid- to upper-class version of that model.

As a 3400c user and having seen a (dead) 1400c, I would personally recommend
the 1400c if you had a choice only between those. (But not the 1400cs - it's
also a 'road apple'). The 1400c is much smaller heightwise and a bit
lighter. The 11.4" (I think) screen is good for the things your friend needs
to do (although if you need a bigger screen, the 12.1" on the 3400c is
swt...).

To "almost-guarantee" the computer from being stolen is to personalize it
such that nobody else would -want- to steal it - neon green and pink
splatters, duct tape bits and strips everywhere, you get the idea...
Etching also works but I'm not sure if it would damage computer parts inside
since everything's packed so close together.
;-)

there might not be any power, and a solar
charger might work well. Or an auto adapter.

It all depends on where your friend
is stationed. Could be great electricity

all. I was unprepared for how different
it was when I arrived. I adapted, but I
could not have forseen what it would be

from the PC schoolteachers in the capital.
I was in the bush, which was great, but it
was no place for a portable computer.

A Mac Powerbook is built like a tank,
generally speaking, and I would select a
model based on physical toughness and
battery longevity. The iBook would win
for this, even at a higher price,
and I'd add a surge suppressor,
car power adaptor, or solar device
depending on where the station is.

Things get stolen. Any portable computer
would be a great candidate for being
lifted. The best thing there would be
to physically carry the PB on the flight.
(My radio was stolen AT KENNEDY IN NY)
Further, there are security cables
available. Lastly, if your friend is
staying with a family, they tend to
protect their volunteers very well.

Good luck,

Re: It fell down

2001-10-02 Thread Martin

The buzzing noise suggests a moving part, and so probably your drive.
My advice is to back up everything at once, and consider upgrading to
a bigger drive; I wouldn't trust that drive anymore. Drives are cheap.

If you don't want to replace it, try backing it up with a virtual image,
then reformatting the drive and reinstalling the image. If results are
the same, then the heads probably overwrote something on the drive, and
the system may be finding what it needs in an obscure duplicate file,
which is why it starts up successfully, but also why it takes so long.

In that case, odds are good that reformatting will restore the drive.
I'd try this first, before cracking the little guy open.

Right now, tonight, before 10pm Eastern, Auction Depot:
www.auctiondepot.com

They have two G3 Wallstreets and the bide were at 450.00 last I looked.
I would suspect that they will end up just over 500.00, but who knows?

That would give your friend a relatively current PowerBook. MAC service
and supplies are readily available from South Africa if she needs that.

I've dealt with Auction Depot several times and I've always been
satisfied with them.

Hope this helps,

That 170 battery rollercoaster

2001-10-02 Thread Michael Dolberry

Hi Folks,

I am in the process of reconditionong the battery on
my wife's PB 170.

I have deep charged and discharged it several times,
as recommended.

The last two times the discharge curve has almost been
identical. It runs down to about 25% after only 6
minutes and then ramps back up to about 35-40% for
about 5 minutes more, until finally discharging
completely after about 35 minutes.

While this explains why the battery goes to sleep
after about 5 minutes, I wonder if this is a symptom
of a bad battery or something.

Has anyone else encountered such a thing?

I like the 1400. It is good out of the box. (Better if
a G3 card is added. But that would become MORE than
$500. But the card actually incrreases battery life
and responsiveness, somehow.)

One thing to consider is that South Africa is
"relatively" nearby and has Apple products and
support, when she does come out of the bush. At least
they did when I was there.

At first guess, I would say that one of the
connections is partially out. It sounds like a "hit

If not, it could be something ready to go. :(

5300 Questions

2001-10-02 Thread Janice Freeman

Hi!
A Powerbook 5300 has just been donated to our school, and I'm the grateful
recipient. I have several questions about its operation.
   1. Is the Powerbook supposed to start up when the power adaptor is
plugged into it? Mine does.
   2. One of the batteries (Apple) has been reconditioned with instructions
I read on the list archives, and works well now, but the extra one
(Panasonic) does not appear to ever charge, even when left in overnight.
When I try battery recondition with it, the 5300 goes black, and I have to
restart.
   3. Does anyone know of a place to download simple directions on how to
use the GV PowerPort modem/ethernet card that came with this machine? I
would love to ethernet to my iMac, but am not sure how the card works. Can
it be put in the slot while the machine is running? Can both ports be used
at once? Can the card stay in the slot all the time without hurting the
Powerbook? How can I tell which way is right side up on the connector that
goes into the card?
   4. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good place to buy an extra
battery?
   5. What kind of adaptor (i.e. what name do I look for in a catalogue?)
would I buy to insert my SmartMedia camera card into the slot? Can these
cards be used to store data from the Powerbook like you would a hard drive?
Thanks in advance for all your help.
Janice

If at all possible, she should really scrape and get a first generation
iBook. They are built like tanks and get great battery life.

The new look factor can be cured with a quick dose of drab spray paint on
the outside.

Another possibility is to go really retro and get something like a PB 170.
A PB 170 will run Eudora Light for email very well, and a small, light word
processor, too. You probably would not want to surf the web with it.

Not so great battery life, but REALLY cheap and there are solar power
adapters available. Also, don't overlook the possibility of running a
laptop off a cigarette lighter adapter in a car or truck.

Airport PBs and Utilities

2001-10-02 Thread Martin

Those of you who requested the screen images of the Powerbook
Utilities, noted the "Airport" setting on the Norton version.

My understanding is that this setup (similar to an Extension
Manager set) allows for the screen to be displayed and showing
text, to satisfy the requirements of the time for clearing the
airport security. I assume that the rationale was that if any
laptop of the time was able to display text on the screen, no
room (or power) would remain for any kind of explosive device.
That is probably still the case.

I personally have no problem with leaving my Powerbook in Sleep
Mode for confirmation of it's function by airport security, and
trust that the same attention will be directed to all passengers
flying with me. I flew El Al often in the seventies, and found
their security, while more thorough than most, was hardly any
inconvenience for me, and left me feeling much more comfortable
about flying with them. Their very slick raid on Entebbe Airport
made me feel even better!

If I ever track these utilities down, I will let this list know
of it, and would like to post them on a willing FTP site for
anyone who wants them. I can't imagine that being a problem.

Advice for Peace Corps volunteer re: used Powerbook, please

2001-10-02 Thread Judith Broadhurst

For a Mac-user friend who's leaving for the Peace Corps in Namibia, Africa,
in 3 weeks, I'm trying to find out ASAP:

1) Which Powerbook available used for less than $500 would be good for
e-mail, word processing and -- if possible -- occasional Web access from
Third World country. She'll be lucky to have electricity and a connection,
certainly not counting on tech support nor repair service, so it must be
RELIABLE.

2) Because I'm a PC user, I'm relying only on research. From what I can
tell, the Powerbooks came out in this order: 5300, 1400, 3400, G3, G4.
Correct? And this is my marginally informed assessment of options:

* The 5300 had problems, especially for her situation (it's rated as Road
Apple on LowEndMac), plus one of those awful Nicad batteries, no CD-ROM
drive, small hard drive, and all-around too limiting, even though she
doesn't want a model so new that it's likely to get stolen.

* There's nothing but parts available for the 1400 series, far as I can
tell, and no compelling reason to look for one anyway (?).

* iBooks, current or original models, are too likely to get stolen and more
than she can afford, even used.

* Based partially on this article
http://www.macopinion.com/columns/roadwarrior/99/10/28/index.html, the 3400
sounds like the best bet.

Do you agree? Different recommendation? Any suggestions of where to look for
one online, with fair prices and some kind of warranty? Have tried PowerMax,
eBay, half.com.

My 3400 made it to Europe and back, but then my little dog got
tangled in the cables while it was on my desk and pulled it down
on the tile floor.
It starts, but very slowly and it makes an intermittent buzzing
noise. It works OK, but I'm assuming I should take it apart and
see if something's loose. Any suggestions? It's ve-e-e-ry slow
booting.

Re: Flying to/from USA with PowerBook

2001-10-02 Thread MacinNW

In a message dated 10/2/01 10:21:14 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

>before Sept 11. I had my laptop swabbed with a small white cloth and

Folks, the FAA is not a part of the Federal Government and airport security
is run by the lowest bidder and paid for by the airlines. There is no
standardization.

The swabs and test equipment are looking for chemical residue from
explosives.

3 years ago I had my briefcase, with my PB5300 inside, swabbed, I asked if
they wanted me to turn it on and they said no. They were surprised that I
knew what the swab was for. (SFO) I had no special knowledge about the
explosives search techniques at the time.

My father as a professional photographer had been thru airport security
hundreds, if not thousands of times. On occasion he would not set off the
metal detectors, yet he always had two pounds of steel and stainless in his
brace. He even covered a Presidential speech where the Secret Services' metal
detectors did not go off. But who would have wanted to harm President Ford?

As to why Mar was asked to turn on his 3 laptops, I would guess that since it
was outside of the norm, that it was flagged. The amount of explosives that
could be hidden in a laptop or even a spare battery could bring a plane out
of the sky, and someone is bringing 3 on board???
And they prolly did not have the explosives test equipment.

I have already asked the listmoms if we could expound on this thread and go
a bit OT and talk more about airport and airplane security. I felt that if we
were to be prohibited from taking a laptop on a plane that that would affect
mobile computing. The stated purpose of this list is _technical_ issues that
affect mobile computing. But if you can not travel with a laptop, there would
be no need for this list, and currently many airlines are talking of banning
all carry-on.

So either ask the listmoms to _temporarily_ allow us to expound on this
subject or ...

can we end this thread now?
