Color Stylewriter 2400 breaks in Ukraine

2001-10-25 Thread mark baker

Hello all,

My Color Stylewriter 2400, which had been working like a dream here,
yesterday, when turned on, began making a clacking news during the start
up. I opened it up and cannot see what could be obstructing one of the
gears. I think I will have to take it apart. Does anyone know whether I
can get the manual or at least an exploded view on the WEB? Is this,
perhaps, [hopefully], a known problem that can be easily fixed?

I cannot work here without a printer.

thanks,

mark

I thought 1.5 only works on PPC Macs? I'm looking for something that I
won't have to upgrade my Mac to use. Maybe a version older than 1.5...

Re: 5300 battery in a 3400?

2001-10-25 Thread chris boring

AFAIK, 5300, 3400 and G3 'Kanga' batteries can all be used in the 3400. I'm
not sure if the 1400 had the same form factor, but I'd imagine if it did,
you could use it as well in your 3400.

I have 3 3400 batteries, all of which hold a charge quite nicely. Should I
look for more or is that sufficient?

All the stuff I've seen from Apple says you can use 5300 batteries in
newer models in which they fit. The reverse isn't true though. The
5300 was supposed to be LiOn but since a few of the early ones kind

Re: 170 won't boot: please help

2001-10-25 Thread John Pitt

thanks everyone for your suggestions. The problem is fixed for now -
it seems like (klutz me, good thinking Magnus!) the problem this time
was the power adapter, which had been half pulled out from the
powerboard under my desk.

But I suspect there's more than one thing happening here, because I'm
sure that wasn't it the other times I've had this trouble. I think it
may have something to do with the instruction set behind the system
folder in ROM (is that the 'firmware'?). Last time I had this sort of
trouble, it went through a funny process where at first it wouldn't
read the system off a floppy, then about 12 hours later it would boot
off the floppy but not the hard drive, then after leaving it
overnight it started off the HD straight off.

I'd be interested if anyone knows about this stuff, because I suppose
it'll happen again. I've also had similar trouble with a PB 100 that
I tried to get going for a friend, except in that case I could never
get it going after repeated tries with different systems on floppies.
I've read somewhere that the basic operating info in ROM can be
corrupted by crashing at low power, especially on the 100. I've also
had word processing files corrupted beyond repair from trying to
squeeze the last bit of juice out of my batteries on a planeŠ

So thanks again everyone, especially Magnus! I'm pleased to hear I'm
not alone with this, and wonder if anyone is able to shed more light
into this twilight zone on the other side of startupŠ

Palm Sync to PowerBook IR Port

2001-10-25 Thread Victor Nazarian

I was able to sync my Palm by IR to a G3 Wall St. using OS 8.6 and all I
needed to do was to install the latest Palm Desktop software version
2.6.3 and you should be off to the races. You may need to tell the Palm
Desktop sync software to us the IR port on that powerbook instead of the
serial port. You may also need to upgrade from 8.1 to 8.6 on that 1400.

I found that you could just use those older Apple PC Card extensions
directly from a previous OS version without problems. So just find them in

I presume that's right, but as you said you're running 8.1, that should
already include the final CFM.

I ran 8.1 on my Q950s, and it ran the last 68K version of AO-Hell and it
never put up a fuss. Therefore, 8.1 must have come with at least the minimum
level of CFM support that AO-Hell required.

The only machine I really had any CFM problems with was my trusty Q650, and
that was a 7.1 system until I adopted 7.6.1.

I jumped from the Q650 and 7.6.1 to a 266 MHz G3 MT and 8.1 and almost
immediately thereafter to a 300 MHz G3 MT and 8.5.1, as Apple couldn't keep
the 266 repaired and it was costing them too much in warranty costs. The 300
was a "mechanical replacement" for the unfixable 266 and cost me no extra $$$.

Re: PB 540c and help with PCMCIA card cage Rev. C

2001-10-25 Thread Robert E. Blomquist

Thanks for the explanation of CFM/Code Fragment Manager.

So, If I have (find?) the final version of CFM (assume it was
available/installed using MacOS 8.1?), then I should not have a
problem with the Apple Serial Modem Install on my pb 540c 040, and

Bob

--
<<
Or, what is the CFM-68k Runtime Enabler Extension, and what other programs

>>

The Code Fragment Manager went through several unfortunate revisions.

It was needed and required for AO-Hell 4.0, but AO-Hell, in all their wisdom,
discovered some unpublished hooks in the CFM and used them. But, they didn't
work as expected, so AO-Hell 3.0 wouldn't work.

AO-Hell refused to use the published, and supported CFM hooks, so Apple was
forced by the sheer weight of AO-Hell to "fix" the CFM.

Originally expected to take a year to fix, the work was actually accomplished
in about one-third that time.

Apple released the final version of CFM, but in the mean time, and for some
time thereafter, AO-Hell was distributing a beta version of CFM.

Therefore, you would actually down-level your system by installing AO-Hell.

MacOS 7.6 was released with the CFM disabled ... and the doc tells you as
much ... as the CFM testing was not complete when 7.6 was released. Remember,
7.6 was important because it was the first enabler-less release. I believe
7.6.1 includes the final CFM.

CFM is not needed on any PPC Mac ... it is included in the PPC support code
itself, while it is an extension on 68K versions.

The proper version of CFM should be included with 7.6.1 or later.

But, interestingly enough, the CD-ROM included with the PB500's PPC upgrade
is 7.5.3.

Thanks.

I searched my MacOS 8.1 install CD, and found an "Apple Serial Modem
Install" within CD Extras/Apple Telecom/Serial Modems folders, that
covers the PC card extensions needed. Unfortunately, there is a
problem.

Apple says that this can only be used with PPC Macs, or PB 500 series
upgraded with PPC and PCMCIA card cage rev. C., due to a bug in the
CFM-68k Runtime Enabler Extension affecting 680x0 Macs. Apple does
say that I can use the custom install option to install these, but
will run into problems if other software uses the CFM-68k Runtime
Enabler Extension at the same time.

I do not (yet) have a PPC upgrade, but I do have the PCMCIA card cage rev. C.

So, what PC card extensions can I use, and where to find them?

Or, what is the CFM-68k Runtime Enabler Extension, and what other
programs use it? Do I need to worry about the bug?

Voice Recognition on 68k Powerbooks?

2001-10-25 Thread Mike Hebel

I'm curious - does anyone have the older version of Plain Talk lying
around? Something that will work on 7.6.x and 68k? (Apple, once
again, has relegated almost anything but the newest version to the
dustbin - or hidden it beyond the ken of man.)

I'd like to see how well it works on my 540c but I can't seem to find
it anywhere and 1.5.4 only works on PPC 8.6 or above.

Besides the Plain Talk is there anything else out there for free or
minimal cost that will do this on my older Macs?
