Networking problems

2002-04-18 Thread Max Miles

Hey Folks,

Been subbed for two days now and already I'm learning. Still, questions
abound.

With a new/old pb1400c, I'm wondering... what to do with it? Would be a
perfect word processor for school, yet the problem is how to get it to
talk with my other computer. In the mail is a Sonnet G3 333 upgrade,
I'll be getting OS 8.6 (although I just read somewhere it's better to
stick with 8.5 with the 1400.) And I have a Orangelink cardBus PC
firewire card that someone found extra in an order. Now, after I get the
upgrade (the sonnet upgrade) will I be able to use this firewire card to
connect to my iMac G3 500? Can one use firewire to connect computers?
Will I be stuck with shelling out another $100 for an ethernet card?

I tried using an external modem for file transfer, via email, but it
felt silly.

cheers,

Max

3400 Ethernet Extension

I didn't realize when I installed 8.6 that the 3400
used a special extension for modem/ethernet. Now I am

card. I have a feeling this is becasue I don't have
the right extension loaded.

Does anyone know if there is somewhere I can download
the 3400 Modem/Ethernet Extension?

Cheers,

It's not really necessary, but it would be easier, because then I could

I'll give it a fixed address for the time being. Then I can ping it and
get it from the arp table.

And get the Orininoco Silver wireless card for $50, and set up the iMac

Yes. If you are running an Operating system that HAS Apple System
Profiler, why then it will work.

Went digging and finally found Network Selector (had forgotten ALL about
that!) it let me switch to Open Transport, apply a fixed IP address
temporarily, get to the 'real' TCP/IP control panel and the answers I
needed to set it up for dhcp...

Whew...

networking with a Duo

2002-04-18 Thread Frank Modica

I've tried to set up an ethernet network between a Duo 2300 and my 6100,
but the Duo frequently hangs up while loading the extensions. I've done a
voodoo dance with the Duo and sometimes it will connect, but usually it
hangs after the Express modem extension loads on the screen. I've played
with extension sets on the Duo, going to 8.5 base and 8.5 all while
including extensions that I'll need for filesharing, but it still hangs up.
It does seem to be an extensions problem, but am I missing something
obvious?

For operating systems, the 6100 runs 8.1 and the Duo has OS 8.5.1. As for
hardware, the 6100 has an AAUI transceiver and I'm trying to connect the
2300 through a mini-dock with an Asante EN/SC SCSI ethernet adapter.

When I've used the SCSI adapter with my PB 170 it connects every time. When
I disconnect the adapter from the duo it starts up just fine. I have done
the serial cable mini-network between the 6100 and the Duo but would love
to do the cross-over network for ethernet.

BTW, I can connect my 170 to an iMac using the EN/SC adapter but the iMac
won't connect to the Duo.

Turn on your pop-up killer before visiting...
The only thing not mentioned in the article is a module that shipped with
the 5300--a very convenient pc card holder. Holds 4 total, but the really
nice thing is that if you put it in empty it lightens the computer by
several ounces. I picked up an extra one recently for this purpose. Had no
idea what it was for the first three years I owned the thing.

Re: PC IDE drive in a 5300

2002-04-18 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

 Master is the correct setting.

I am getting several odd clicks, beeps, and crashes. Apples Drive Setup
1.7.3 is what I have used to initialize it, but even with that there is
a
5mb portion that is Locked and cannot be initialized. Now that it has
been initialized when I boot up the Mac wants to initialize that 5mb
disk,
but cannot because it it locked.

What you need to do is reformat the drive, but do a custom setup on it,
whcih will allow you to delete that odd locked partition. (which is
likely a 'quickstart' partition used by the old PC it was in; these
partitions let you save the memory state of the computer and quickly
restart rather than rebooting, much like Virtual PC does.)

But that is the rub, it won't let me initialize that partition. Always
fails.

Even Norton 3.5 and 4.0 could not make a dent.

Macintoshes do not obtain the DNS server address automatically when
connecting via PPP, the way most computers do. This is the first thing to
check.

You have to go to the internet settings control panel, and hand enter the
DNS IP.

Not initialize, what you want to do is go into the options that let you
re-partition the drive into a single Mac partition.

If THAT doesn't work, you'll have to get your hands a LOT dirtier and
use pdisk, a linux tool that will let you blow away that partition.

see: http://www.mklinux.org/getting_started/preparations/index.html

It discusses how to create partitions both using disk setup and pdisk.

Re: ethernet card summary

2002-04-18 Thread Chris Loehr

I have this card I am trying to get to work on a Powerbook 1400 running 8.6.
It is by Dlink, see link below. No luck yet but does have mac driver disk in
the box. Instructions say it works with only newer powerbooks like 2400, 3400
etc, web says works with 1400 also. Can't find drivers on the web. At this
site the card is not badly priced. It is a 10/100 card and has a 56k modem.
And is dongleless. Maybe you will have better luck getting it to work than I
did. If anybody tries this card and gets it to work on 1400 please let me
know. Maybe I am just doing something wrong.

http://shop.store.yahoo.com/akidacomputer/dlinpcmci10m.html

You did leave an important brand off of the list however and that is Kingston.
Many of their cards had mac drivers in the box as well as on the web. I am
currently using a Kingston EtheRX IC PC Card in my Powerbook 1400. Box
included mac and pc drivers when I bought it several years ago. Has worked
flawlessy for me.

Also I believe Dayna had compatible cards.

Like I said, the battery life was great, it ran on it fine, and worked

doesn't now... which is annoying to both of us.

Hi Eric - had a similar experience when I gave a 165C to a friend. Bought it
for a song. Fiddled around with it and got it working. Gave it to him in
sleep mode (he lives an hour away), when he got home, it wouldn't start.
Only got a ticking sound.

I got it back and after fiddling around again, can't remember exactly but
think it by using the newly charged battery from my 160 plus the AC to get
it working.

Sounds like you always used it with the AC plugged in sleep mode on your
desktop like I use my 160.

I think if the battery doesn't have much of a charge left in it (the one in
the 165c had less than 10 minutes) and if the PRAM battery is also depleted,
it won't start right away, even from the AC.

I don't know another solution if you don't have a good charged battery
available. Anybody else?

Re: networking problems (1400 and iMac)

2002-04-18 Thread Chris Loehr

Good thought though. I like that idea and may try it myself,

Thanks

Alternatively, you could get a 1400-compatible PCMCIA wireless card. The
Lucent Silver card has had good reviews and costs around $45-50 from OWC
 http://eshop.macsales.com/specials/MailList.cfm

You could then get an airport card for your iMac. I'd seen them going for
around $50 at various places on the web, but can't remember now. Give
 Sherlock a try.

This solution might be a little bit more expensive than an ethernet card for
your 1400, but it's a thought. Good luck.

Like I said, the battery life was great, it ran on it fine, and worked

plugged in to the AC adaptor as long as I wanted (even just doing the use -

sleep - use thing for a few days straight.)

The person's driving up and down the coast - could this have been brought

on by water or just being jostled at some time? Anything that can be done

to rectify this? It worked fine when I used it, showed it to her, etc, and

doesn't now... which is annoying to both of us.

Then what system would you have to be running (minimum) on the 1400 to do
this? How do you set it up on the 1400 assuming you have an airport card in

I don't know about the Lucent software, the Airport software requires
minimum OS 8.6 or possibly 9.x, I'm not sure.

PB 1400 and ext monitors

2002-04-18 Thread Ken Norris (dialup)

Hello,

PowerBook Stats:
PB 1400c, 133mhz, 48mb with 128mb CF card as VRAM, 1.2g internal HD,
optional monitor port, Global Village fax/modem PC card.

What do I do if I want to use an external monitor and increase resolution? I
have the dongle for the monitor port.

Best regards,
Ken N.
