System crash?

2002-08-13 Thread John Webb

Hi Everybody,

I have a real stumper...a few days ago I installed some new software onto my
Powerbook 3400/180. The instalation went fine, but when I went to open the
new program my Mac froze, then I heard the soud of breaking glass (chimes of
death?). I now tried to start it up and I get the start up sound, and the
screen comes on, and after two minutes or so the screen goes bright white
and a little folder comes on with a flashing questionmark. I have tried
booting from both my OS 9 and my Norton Systemworks disk, but to no avail...
In short...HELP!!! Do I need a new hard drive? A new PRam battery? I hope I
haven't lost my Powerbook for good"sob" no really, I'm o.k...

John Webb

It's one of those "sorta" things. Some parts of the '040s are internally
clock doubled, which is why you'll often see them specced as "50/25" or
"66/33". Apple's spec sheet lists the higher numbers, which most others
(including the chips themselves) have the lower numbers.

It is true that the ones that have some parts clock doubled are faster than
ones that wouldn't, but it's not the same as a bus speed + multiplyer.

First, I'd try to start it with the shift key held down, to start
without extensions. If that didn't work, I'd start it with a DiskTools
floppy, and remove the CD-ROM extension from the system folder.

It seems to me that this is true only if you reduce the stated
speed of ALL computers to the bus speed. The 040 processor runs at 2x the
bus speed, i.e. 50 and 66 in the 500s.

I read an article somewhere, many years ago (specific, huh?) about
replacing the cells inside the battery. Apparently, if you're handy
with tools, you can open up the battery back and you'll find
cylindrical cells much like normal batteries. These are the NiCad
cells. They are the part that wears out and they can be replaced.

If you're not handy with tools, I would check for a local franchise
of Batteries Plus. The one near me replaced the NiCad cells in my
rechargeable B&D screwdriver (before B&D went to the exchangable
packs). I had to open the thing up, but they were able to take the
old cells and solder the old contacts/conductors to the new cells for
me. They were very reasonable too. I think repairing old notebook
batteries is part of their regular business.

Oooops. Didn't read that far before I started replying. Hopefully I
added a little useful information.

That said, in performance it does compare to a 486/50 or 66 laptop,
having played with both. It definitely outclasses a 483/33 running

check out http://www.wwc.edu/~frohro/520_Fixes/520_&_540.htm for the details
of recelling the battery packs. I finally completed recelling my 2 packs a
couple of days ago, all went pretty smoothly, using soldering paste, a small
butane torch and a gas-soldering iron for the tight solders (where a 1000ºC
flame right on a battery wouldn't be appreciated). Putting the cases back
together is a bit difficult, though you can squeeze them into the slots ok.

Both my batteries are "seen" by the system and seem to be charging, though,
as the above webpage states, it takes several recharge cycles before the
pack holds its maximum charge... well, at least that's what's suppose to
happen! Heres hoping...

The cost for recelling isn't cheap - AU$144 (approx. US$100) for 16 Sanyo HR
"A" cells rated at 2100mAh - plus associated costs for any tools you don't
have - soldering iron, butane penciltorch, solder paste, a very sharp, stury
knife, etc. - but given new packs will cost between US$125 and US$160 EACH
there's money to be saved if you're feeling a little adventurous.

Just remember that nothing will nuke the EMM circuit quicker than static
electricity, and make sure the cells themselves don't short... i got a few
rather neat sparks happening by accident and thankfully nothing died, but
given how much juice those cells hold, you don't wanna push it!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

Cheers, Ben.

Re: Mac Portable - Strange Card

2002-08-13 Thread KADaggett

Hmmm, that is what I thought, but with or without the "Strange Card" the
"About the Finder" says 5mb. (With the "normal" RAM card in the RAM
slot.) It must need some sort of driver (probably on the crashed HD). It
would be fun to see what it would do!

Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.

Think of the 520 as a 486/50-486/66 laptop, or even slow pentium. It
runs the Mac OS about as well as these systems run Windows
95...depending on how much memory is in it (it will let you have up to
36 MB ram, which is desireable!) and drive space.

Data Memory Systems sells the 32 mb upgrade for $79. So long as
everything else works on it I'd consider $79 a worthwile investment,
since you got the rest of it for nothing...

There are a couple of problems with this system. You want to make sure
the screen isn't wobbly; the hinge mounting screws can work their way
loose, and can cause the case or screen housing to crack eventually, but
it's reasonably easy to fix.

Batteries are hideously expensive and short-lived.

I have a 540c which has a slightly faster processor, (66 mhz vs 50);
it's quite usable, running System 8.1, the most modern system that runs
on a 68K.

Many people run older systems on it, such as 7.5.5 (which you can
download from Apple) but I prefer 8.1.

There are browsers like iCab (http://www.icab.de ) that run quite well
on it, but with the max Ram, even Netscape 4.79 (the last one to run on
68K processors) runs reasonably well.

I have an old version of AppleWorks on it, and a bunch of other stuff.
It connects to the netwrk here at work with no problems, even to the
Win2K servers, and, forced to, I could probably just about use it as my
main machine (though I'm quite happy I don't have to!) Certainly it'll
handle e-mail and browsing.

As I said, batteries are expensive, and most often require some serious
rejuvenation; I can run mine for about 4-1/2 hours on my three batteries.

I've also seen reports by people on this list who have rebuilt them with
new cells, with some success.

Help with inherited 520c

2002-08-13 Thread Christine Calderon

I recently *inherited* a 520c, and I wanted to know if
it is worth investing in it to use as a secondary or
backup computer for light Web surfing. I am a
lifelong PC user, so I know nothing about the 520c or
what it's capable of. The only items included with
the computer were an AC power adapter (the battery
that came with it died, apparently) and the manual.
I'm supposed to be receiving a printer and cable, as
well as an Ethernet 10-T adapter sometime soon if they
can find them.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be most appreciated.

Ken,

If I recall correctly you have a (rare) RAM expansion module. The Portable
came with 1 MB RAM standard and 1MB or 3MB expansion cards.
Your Portable should show 4 MB RAM in the Profiler with the card installed.

HTH,

Tobias.

I use my Motorola StarTac with Verizon service. A data cable to the
serial port is all that is needed, the phone has a built in modem.
This is limited to 14,400. It can drop out from time to time but I
think I kept the connection for at least 30 minutes most of the time.

Verizon also offers a data service. Speed is up to 144Kbps. It
requires a particular phone and the service is an add on feature.

A few people in the boating world are using a Sharp TM20 PocketMail service.
It gives you email through a dial-up connection from any phone, even a pay
phone, using an acoustic coupler.

I think this would be good backup system if you were going to be close to a
telephone but not sure if you are in a cell service area.

I currently use FIDO's GPRS service and it's excellent for the US and
Canada, but only in areas that have digital service. I use it with the
Wallstreet. It gives me speeds of up to 53-54K, almost as good as a 56K
dial-up connection. It's a bit tricky finding the right modem script for
the Mac but your friends will have no problem with their wintel setup.

Truckers and motor home users have their own hardware for TV. There is
device used in the boating world called Follow-Me-TV that is relatively
inexpensive and allows boaters to track satellite TV signals while at
anchor. I'm not sure how it would work for a fixed satellite set up each
evening by a motor home user. Here's what they have to say about tracking
the satellite internet signal:

> While Follow Me TV® can physically handle the 36" x 24" dishes for Starband
(DishNET) and DirecPC (Hughes) for TV and internet service, even very
accurate tracking within 1º in azimuth (elevation set manually) is not good
enough to handle 2-way internet traffic at anchor  (TV tracking with these
dishes will work). No manufacturer has been able to track with these 2-way
internet systems. Professional installers tell us that absolutely NO
movement can be tolerated and electronic tuning for each location is
required as well for these systems to work on land. Several customers have
tried and failed with both of these systems for 2-way internet tracking on
boats.

So, the sentence "electronic tuning for each location is required...for
these systems to work on land" tells me this might not be an option yet. On
the other hand, several providers advertise their products as being
available for motor homes. EG: http://www.surfthenetfaster.com/

Hope this helps.

If there are too many phones connected to the same line that can cause problems.
Count all the phones devices (including answering machines, cordless phones, caller ID
devices, fax machines, other modems, etc) that are all connected to that same phone
line. I've been told you should not have more than four devices on one line and
that's counting your computer's modem.

Panasonic KXL-D740 SCSI CDROM with a PB??

2002-08-13 Thread Robert Eye

Does any one know if you can use (or has anyone successfully used) a Panasonic
KXL-D740 4x SCSI external CDROM with a 5300 series (or other SCSI) Powerbook?

What CD-ROM driver version do I need (Panasonic does not have drivers for the Mac)?

Can the 5300 use the PCMICIA connection, or does it have to use the SCSI port?

Is it hard to obtain a cable that will interface between the CD-ROM's half-pitch
50-pin connector with a Centronics or 25 pin D connector?

Thanks in adavnce!

Except that the Adaptec SCSI card mentioned (model info: PowerDomain SlimSCSI 1480) is

So, having an Adaptec PCMCIA SCSI card might handy not be a bad idea, even for a 5300c
or 540c, say, because at least you would have an alternate way of accessing SCSI
devices which don't seem to like the above-mentioned 'book's internal SCSI port.

Wireless modems and data...?

2002-08-13 Thread Andrew Kershaw

Some friends of mine plan on travelling around the US in a motor home
in the not too distant future (they're in the process of selling their
house). They've asked me how they can get online while travelling.
Particularly, they want to know about Ositech's
line of cell phone -> PC adapters for data
over cell networks. They have something like the King of Heart's in
mind: I'm afraid I just
don't know enough about mobile data connections to help them out...

I have a few q's I guess:
* Does this system require a data plan from your phone service
provider?
* What kind of connections can they expect (is 56k really possible
over cells?)

* What do you folks recommend for mobile data access? (Actually, I
want to know this for myself too - I've got a Wallstreet and a 5300cs
that I'd like to get online when I'm literally "out in the field") ;-)

I'm sure they would love broadband... Is there a good solution for
that? I've heard that there is a satellite service specifically
tailored for mobile home users that has the dish actively tracking the
satellite so that users don't have to re-point the dish each time they
want to talk to the satellite...

I know this is slightly OT (dealing w/ PCs and wintel laptops), but it
does carry some interest for the Mac road warrior.

Can anyone help me? Like I said, this is something I just don't know
enough about to give advice on... And any tips you can send my way
(for both PC AND Mac) would be great!

TIA!
Drew

Re: Problem installing Asante FriendlyNet PCMCIA Card into PB1400

2002-08-13 Thread Gary Patterson

Thanks to everyone who sent a response. I have had bad
experiences with tech support, but Asante were very fast to
respond. I sent them every number printed on the card, the
PB1400 plus a few others I made up. The response was a
straightforward "won't work" with the reasons why.
The 1400 just won't support this card, due to it being
Cardbus/PCMCIA. The Cardbus bit throws it completely, even
though the manual refers to PCMCIA type II as the unit's specs.
But, I would like to especially thank Cameron Kaiser for the
3C589 driver! By some sort of psychic transfer thing, he guessed
that the old PCMCIA card I had lying around was a 3Com 3C589
card. Cameron, can you pick some lottery numbers for me please?
Thanks everyone,
