There aren't. However, the Farallon drivers will work if suitably modified,
since they're just rebadged 3C589 cards.

I'd be interested in hearing how well they work for others. Mine has

Re: Woo hoo!!!!

2002-09-11 Thread Andrew Kershaw

Ok, I ran some tests in MacBench 5. The results are on my
website:

Any speed differences between the overclocked CS motherboard and the
standard CE motherboard are probably coincidental. As you can tell,
the specs are almost exactly what you would expect and are very
similar to the performance of a PowerBook 1400/117. ;-) Next up:
changing the bus speed Soon as I get around to ordering the parts
from Digi-Key

Mad Dog: The VRAM chip on my 5300cs says:

TI -70
TMS55165DGH
HD 58A72AC P

At least, that's what's printed on the IC that I think is the 512K of
VRAM. It's at position U10 on the bottom of the mobo... Any idea
where the MMU is on this machine? These 603e's didn't have integrated
memory controllers, did they? There's a monster TI chip under the
603e - that's not a 3rd party MMU, is it?

The Whitney (U12) chip controls IDE, right?
That ITT (U6) chip does the ATA/IDE expansion (media bay) I think...
The T-Rex (U24) IC should be the PCMCIA controller
And I don't know what the rest of the stuff does... Can't find the
"singer" chip (which controls audio)... It's interesting seeing an
AMD IC on that board (U20). I wonder what that does?

Peace out,
Drew

Introduction and Question. :)

2002-09-11 Thread K.L. Shelly

Hi. I'm a college student with an IBM PC for primary work, but I
picked up a lonely little PowerBook 140 at the Salvation Army (where I
work) for $15. Everything works fine, except - it doesn't have a battery,
and can only be used on AC.
Seeing as I don't handwrite due to a disability, and I didn't want
to take the /real/ laptop on the bus, I figured a bus-durable second
laptop that did word processing perfectly (even if it couldn't, in
comparison, do much more) would be good to have.
However, it needs a battery to fulfill that purpose, as well as a
battery charger. Is under $10 for both on E-Bay a fair price for both? I'm
working without a net here - I was 9 when this machine came out, so I've
no idea with regard to prices.
Thanks in advance. :)

Duo 280 screen on a 230/250 logic board

OK, I just tried the 280 screen on a 230/250 LB (using the 250 cable of

. . . yeah, I know it's not supposed to work, but since I've got 'em all
apart anyway . . .

Heck, any other requests while I've got this pile of parts? Sadly, I
don't have any 270s so can't toss any of those into the blender. : >)

Re: 1400c RAM expansion

2002-09-11 Thread Dan K

Sigh, all of the 24MB modules I have remaining are the same, PCB, chips,
markings, etc. The few I had that were different apparently weren't as
far out of spec as these must be since those are the modules that never
got returned. Sigh . . .

I did read all that devnote stuff over again and maybe there _is_ hope. I
need to trace out some of the referenced RAS lines and see if the
possibility of adding the suggested resistors exists. Not likely but I'll
get around to investigating it one day soon.

On a lighter note, my second 167mhz (thanks Paul!) PB540c is now an
iTunes internet radio tuner and LAN mp3 player, and sometime inet
browsing appliance. PB500 sound output is quite good actually and using
os9.1 and 40MBs of ram it works quite well. Too bad I can't get iTunes 2
to run, but since I don't even know what advantage v2 has over v1 I guess
I really don't care as long as v1 works.

If you need repair, I can help you.

CompUSA is a no-no for all things MAC other than software perhaps.

Check my Ebay ID sc-computer-inc. I refurbish 500 series systems

First thing to try is to remove all power sources and let it sit awhile.

Failing that, reset the power manager with all power removed.

As for CompUSA, yes, they might could fix it. But, you could probably
get a whole new 520c what they'd want to charge. Probably even a 33mhz
upgrade to go alone with it.

My trusty old 520c, which has been upgraded with a Newer PowerPC upgrade
card and a 540c screen, has suddenly decided to play dead. It does
nothing. The batteries seem to be charged. The power supply seems to be
providing power. I pulled the hard drive and it worked fine in an
external case (I retrieved my data). But when I hit the power button it
just sits there.

When I had the case open I made sure that everything seemed to be seated
properly on the boards. Any suggestions?

I noticed that the local (45 miles away) CompUSA store advertises that
they can repair any type of computer. Would this be a safe alternative?
Any recommendation for other repair options?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I've been away and never had a chance to check mail
but I don't see any replies to your long ago post -
several years ago I asked the Society I do volunteer
work with to purchase MYOB (we were using a Performa
580CD at the time (donated equipment) and I had
nothing but problems with it.
I started using Quicken - packed with my various new
Macs over the years - I'm up to Quicken 2000 - and
have had no problems using it on various Macs - 3400 -
5300 - 8600 - 7300 & 7500 and downloading stuff from
the bank etc. All transfered between machines using
from OS8.5 to 9.2
As for Quickbooks I have no personal experience but if
Intuit's "free" cheapy is any indication I'd vote for
Quickbooks over MYOB any day.
PS - do you want an old version of MYOB on floppies -
it's been doing nothing for years.

Re: Powerbook 100 problems

2002-09-11 Thread alan_oneil

SORRY IN ADVANCE FOR A LONG POST.
hi all and thanks for the great input about my dying
pb100. to clarify, i have gotten it to successfully
boot using an ext. floppy in the past, but using every
SCSI tool i could get my hands on (silverlining, apple
hd sc setup, scsi probe, etc), all i could see was the
firmware (a conner 20M). the drive would spin up and
click audibly, but not in the normal fashion. instead
of rapid short clicking, it would do something like
this:
_CLICK_ CLICK CLIck CLick Click click click click click
click click click. (loud at first then gradually fading
out, about a dozen clicks total. then it would pause
for a sec and try again, a few times before giving up)
BUT IT GETS BETTER!!! I recently went overseas to
Korea, which uses the 220V standard (i live in USA)
that the pb100 power supply supports (because as 100
users should know the lifetime of a leadacid battery is
terrible). I brought the pb100 along just for fun, as i
had some b&w games on a floppy.
Lo and behold, when i plug it in and press any key, the
startup disk is given back to me and the pb boots into
sys 7! (i was using 6.0.8L on a floppy for its mini
footprint). the HD was somehow revitalized!!! but the
FD went kaput.
it would make little or no "grinding" noises that are
akin to reading floppies. and when a disk was inserted,
the pb would tell me it was not initialized. when i
would try to initialize it, one of two things would
happen: either the init would fail and the floppy would
come back out, or the screen would go dim (not
completely dim, and the brightness knob was able to
turn it below that), and the pb would reboot itself.
my theory is that there is a short inside the fd that
is suddenly draining WAY too much power from the pb,
causing it to suddenly dim and reboot.
NOW HERE'S THE HARD PART: I came back to the USA very
confused. when i got home, the FD still did not work,
but guess what? neither did the HD. it made the same
noises as before i left the country.

to the offer of the parts-only pb100: what exactly is
working on the pb100, and where are you for shipping?
(i'm in 98092: seattle-tacoma area)

to loyal pb100-er's: any similar problems? i know
you're all trying the best, but i think that your
diagnosis(es?) are wrong :-( could it maybe be my power
supply?

to any other people who might read my post: should i
just give it up and buy a used ppc powerbook? i know
the 100 is the smallest of all pb's until (i think) the
ibook 12.1". i want to try to get this one running
again before i fashion a battery mount to replace the
thoroughly dead lead-acid.

thanks to all,
alan

powerbook 100 problems

(i'm in 98092: seattle-tacoma area)

to loyal pb100-er's: any similar problems? i know
you're all trying the best, but i think that your
diagnosis(es?) are wrong :-( could it maybe be my power
supply?

to any other people who might read my post: should i
just give it up and buy a used ppc powerbook? i know
the 100 is the smallest of all pb's until (i think) the
ibook 12.1". i want to try to get this one running
again before i fashion a battery mount to replace the
thoroughly dead lead-acid.

thanks to all,
alan

I dont know what killed the 5300 mobo, but my organ removal (I pulled

The VRAM should be easy to swap. Want me to do it ? Oh, whats the

I have heard several accounts of the apple 8 meg module causing
problems when you overclock the bus OR have 2 stackable modules in
the non-apple spot for a total of 64 (or more) megs of memory. YMMV.

Re: Woo hoo!!!!

2002-09-11 Thread Andrew Kershaw

I just love it when things "work."

I figured out how to get the CE display working w/ my 512K VRAM cs
logic board - remove the power management module and reseat it every
time before boot. A real pain in the ass and not a long term
solution, but it will let me run some benchmarks...

I finally tracked down a copy of benchmark software and have run some
tests on my 5300ce (stock, w/ extensions enabled). I'm currently
running the same tests on my 5300cs 117MHz (up from 100MHz, extensions
disabled - see my previous posts). Initially, (the tests aren't
finished) it seems that the 5300cs 117MHz (I'm going to start calling
this the 5300cse for 5300cs "enhanced" ... lol!) is at least exactly
as fast as the CE. The CPU and FPU tests were actually _faster_ w/
the 5300cse! (But I think that's an artifact of running w/
extensions disabled).

I'll post the results of the benchmarks on my website tonight, so
everyone can go have a look (say, after 8pm mountain time).

Mad Dog: I took a look at the 190 logic board. The VRAM (and RAM as
well) are not the same on the 190 and 5300. However, the VRAM solder
points on the 5300cse are itty-bitty (not much bigger than those of
the 603e itself)... I could give it a try, but I'm not so confident
that my soldering wouldn't make a mess out of it So you have a
dead 5300 board? What killed it?

Peace out,
Drew

Hi, Dan,
It occurred to me that if they aren't all the same brand, that some
pairs may work and others not? This is probably too simple, but I've heard

Re: 1400c RAM expansion

2002-09-11 Thread Dan K

The ram test failure message pops up because . . . the ram failed the
startup ram test. By rebooting, you avoid getting the message because the
ram test is not performed on a reboot. You are more likely to experience
problems though once the OS starts actually using the 'problem' ram.

I've had my eye on this thread and other similar threads in the past
because I've got more than 80 (!!) 24MB ram modules I'm unable to sell
until I can figure out why they don't work in some 1400s, but _do_ work
fine in others _and_ how to fix it.

I've read everything I could find on the net, in list archives, in NGs,
etc. but the best info I've seen so far can be found in the Apple devnote
on the second generation 1400:

---
RAM Expansion Guidelines

Developers must take special care when designing RAM expansion cards for
the PowerBook 1400 computers. Excessive capacitive loading on the memory
address bus can cause a problem with the timing margins. When this
problem occurs, the computer displays a dialog box at startup time
warning the user that the memory test has failed, and the computer does
not recognize a portion of the newly-installed expansion RAM.

Address Signal Timing

For proper operation of the expansion RAM, the signals on the memory
address bus must be stable before the assertion (falling edge) of the RAS
(row address strobe) signals. Because each address line is connected to
every DRAM device, whereas each RAS line is connected to only one bank of
devices, the difference in loading can cause the address signals to
change more slowly than the RAS signals. The resulting decrease in the
timing margins is greater on expansion cards that have many DRAM devices.

€ Note: The interface to the RAM expansion slot uses buffers to provide
adequate fan-outs. Signals RMA(011), /RCAS(03), /RRAS(27), and /RRAMWE
are buffered by 74FCT245 devices and 22 ‡ damping resisters. €

The timing margin between the address signals and the assertion of the
RAS signals is small. Additional loading of the address bus signals will
further decrease the timing margins and, under worst-case conditions,
will force negative timing margins on the RAM expansion card. To maintain
adequate timing margins in the worst case‹using DRAM devices from
different manufacturers and considering the timing delay caused by
circuit loading‹requires an additional delay of 7 to 10 nS in the
assertion of the RAS signals. The next section describes two ways of
obtaining this additional delay.

[more stuff]
---

sources here:

One thing for sure, the first devnote has none of this detail, so
obviously Apple was catching some heat from ram makers and customers when
supposedly compatible ram turned out to be incompatible.

I've just about given up hope though that I'll be able to fix the modules
I've got, a shame since there's still a good market for the darn things.
Ce la vie. : >)

Just disable the memory check and see if it works ok, speeds up the boot as
well ?

reasonably well. I had been using a 183mhz 603e NUPowr and while the jump

Just for yucks, have you ever tried pulling the motherboard 8MB and having
just the stackables (i.e., the 8MB, and the two 24s)?

Re: 1400c RAM expansion

2002-09-11 Thread archy

I bought my 1400c/133 in February of 1997, and it has the 8MB "expansion"
board, so 16 MB on the board. I promptly bought two 24 meg stackable cards.
I installed both, and upon startup, got the memory check error, and have had
it ever since. From a cold start-up, I can click continue and go onto the
finder, and when I select About this Macintosh..., the computer only
recognizes 60 MB. Next, I select Restart, and everything boots properly,
memory check is fine, and then I get the full 64MB. So my guess is that on a
cold boot, not all the stacks of memory get powered-up in time for memory
check. And yes, when I remove one of the 24 MB cards, the cold-boot is
hitch-free.

I guess this would be a good time to ask if there is a way for me to delay the
memory check long enough for the memory stacks to completely power-up.

Have you reset the power manager? Ctl/opt/Apple/restart with
power/batt off for half hr.
No way for CompUSA, or any other commercial repair. You can do it
yourself, as the 5XX's are so modular that there's no reason for paying
techies.
Get the service manual, and swap back the 040 to narrow down the
problem. Might be the PPC daughtercard. If it still doesn't work, then
you know that the most expensive part isn't the problem. Probably the
motherboard, then.

Re: Need help with dead 520c

2002-09-11 Thread Scott Holder

First thing to try is to remove all power sources and let it sit awhile.

Failing that, reset the power manager with all power removed.

As for CompUSA, yes, they might could fix it. But, you could probably
get a whole new 520c what they'd want to charge. Probably even a 33mhz
upgrade to go alone with it.

Any recommendation for other repair options?

Re: WALLSTREET/AOL CONNECTION

2002-09-11 Thread Andrew Kershaw

Ah, see, there you are. When you use TCP/IP to connect to AOL, you
have to already have a 'net connection. In other words, you are
_already_ connected to a service and AOL just tunnels it's packets
through that connection.

So, this method won't work for connecting directly to AOL. You will
still need to use AOL Link (and not PPP) if you don't have a 2nd ISP
besides AOL.

As for why your connection isn't working, "Caprice1014," you have said
you've checked all the settings... So your AOL connection attempt
fails each time your modem starts connecting to the remote modem...
For each number. Can you dial into any other services?

I'm thinking that your modem is too fast... Sometimes if I'm trying
to connect at 56k (or thereabouts), I'll get all the way through the
connection process when AOL will complain and drop me down to a lower
speed (33.6, 28.8). Sometimes I loose the connection entirely at that
point. Maybe there's all of a sudden a lot of noise on your telephone
line?

Try configuring the modem to connect at 33.6 and see what happens...

Other than that, I can't think of what could be the problem...

Peace,
Drew

This may not help at all, but you might do a search for a control panel
called "Sleeper". It does the same things as Energy saver but has more
features and who knows, it might work when the Energy saver won't. I use it
on my Imac to automatically shut down the machine after it has been powered
on with Energy Saver, as apparently Energy Saver won't do both, at least it
won't on my Imac. I don't remember where I got the program or I would
include the URL.

A lot of older software is still very compatible and useful in my opinion.
I am making a guess here, but I would think that the newer acrobat readers
would be backwards compatible. I don't know anything about Pagemill 1.01,
but I am running version 3 on a Powerbook 5300, and aside from the
limitation of a 640 X 480 screen it works great. I personally don't like all
of the fancy html stuff on a page anyway and can do basically anything I
want with 3.0. You can often pick up old copies of PageMill on Ebay. I
think I paid less than $10 for this one.

Oops ... I forgot I've been using an "unmentionable" ISP for my DSL

didn't offer broadband connections), and I also use this ISP's dial
connection as a backup when their DSL has been down, which it was for the

So, I don't know if it works in every particular, but it surely works when
your AOL connection is, as mine is, through AOL's "Bring Your Own Internet".

I use a router ... as a firewall only, don't you know, because my ISP forbids
use of routers for obtaining additional connections to the 'Net ;-))) ... and
this technique certainly allows for multiple 'puters to access any number of
services, including AOL, all at the same time.

When I use my ISP's dial line as a backup, I lose the firewall function and
the "253 sockets" function of the router, but I can still use the same
back-door method of getting into AOL.

pretty sure that I've heard of people running 9.1 on the machine, although

stable and reasonably responsive with 40 MB Ram, a 6GB Fuji Drive, Ram

This newbie finds this CardBus talk is fascinating. I'd seen the MCE
modification advertised, but didn't know swapping out the cage was
essentially just a physical procedure? Surely something electrical had
to also be done, but I guess not.

So this begs the question. Where are we going to get CardBus cages
ourselves so that we can do our own "MCE swap", now that the cat is out
of the bag?

Remy, you said this has been covered no doubt, but are there
sources for the cages? Sorry, haven't yet checked out the link you
provided if all the info's there already.
