Re: Sopt the blasphemy/tech idiocy.

2002-09-12 Thread David Allen

I know. I have it with VPC 4 on a G3/217 upgraded 7100. (I get133MHZ PC
test times with ME.) I only use it to check my website designs to make
sure they work with the Windoze versions of IE and NS when I can keep it
running long enough to open them! It came with my VPC 4 and I haven't
taken the time to figure out how to install Windoze 95. Still junk, but
stays running longer. (usually)

Ah, I hope no one took me seriously on my earlier post ?!!! ;-O I'd hate
to think that some brand new Mac user joining this list got the idea that
they needed to use (or should ever consider using) Windoze on our beloved
Macs!

Help with drivers

2002-09-12 Thread Kountryone

Hi All
I am trying to find drivers for a US robotics XJ1560 modem for the
Mac. All I find on their site is drivers for windoze. Can anyone steer me to
the right driver???

Also looking for a driver for a Farallon PC card 2.1 and PC card standard. I
can't find any other markings to help with this. It is an ethernet card. I
really need this card to work.

Can anyone help?
Thanks

I would try it going to an external drive Centronix 50, and use a
pass-through terminator, or maybe two. Another cable goes from the
external drive to the desktop, and that's because the 30 pin dock cables
usually end in Cent50.

520c Termination!

2002-09-12 Thread coccorp

Evidently I have been SPOILED all of this past decade by exclusively using Duos

Tonite I just tried to hook up my 520c to my desktop by putting it into SCSI Disk
Mode, and just like I have done a trillion times w/ my Duos, I got my trusty HDI-30,
and my DB-25 x2 cable...

..yeah, yeah! I know NOW what I was missing...!;-)

...only because of U guys. I remember a topic in the recent past about termination. So
now this is what I wanna know: WHERE DO I PUT THE DANG THANG?!?

I DO NOT wanna even try to understand SCSI and Termination; I went to law school, and
I hear that understanding THAT SCSI-sh*t is even harder than the Rule Against
Perpetuities...!

I simply wanna know WHERE do I put the terminator in the above-mentioned setup?
Between the HDI-30 and the SCSI cable?

Thanks & forgive my Scuz-ginity,

I just ordered an external battery charger for my girl friend's
clamshell iBook, it comes with a yo-yo charger. It was $48, and they
were having a 20% off sale at the time. maybe the 'oops' code still
works Anyway you could by the external iBook charger and use the

G3 Pismo power plug

2002-09-12 Thread DWT001

I have asked this question before, and gotten some help. However I need more.
I have a G3 Pismo with a bum power cord. The plastic over the cable has a
defect, and the wire is slightly exposed, causing it to spark when plugged in
to the wall. One kind PB lister suggested just cutting the wire, and
re-solding it. The problem is that the defect is right at the end of the plug
that connects to the computer. There would be nothing sticking out of the
back of the plus to which to solder.
Another kind PB lister suggested a new power supply...$89.00 for a
refurbished one!
I think I'll keep trying to fix what I've got.
What I think I need is a new plug that would go into the back of the
computer. Then I could cut off the old plug, and solder the new to the old.
I'm dead in the water without this machine. Any ideas or direction would be a
big help.
Tks.
Dave

Sharp, yes. Colour perfect, no. The screen is a bit washed out compared to
a CRT, but no LCD is as good anyway. It's a very nice screen for an LCD.

Several of the emulators out there include ROM dumping utils. Check out
http://basilisk2.cjb.net . You may have to download the distribution to
get it, or there might be a standalone download of the rom dumper.

It's aimed at 68k ROMs for 68k Emulation, but the last time I tried it,
I was able to dump my 6500's ROM.

I'm sure it has something to do with the machine having pre-production

I can't say about the 1400 displays 'cos I don't have both; but I do
have each type on 5300s.

I've a passive display on my 1400 and 5300cs, and an active display
on my 5300ce.

The active 5300ce display is very very nice. I get used to the 1400
passive. The 1400 passive display is IMO much nicer han the passive
5300 for some reason. I've read on lowendmac or elsewhere that the
1400's passive display was about the nicest passive display Apple
used.

I have kept an eye on ebay for active matrix 1400 displays (about the
only place to find them) and while I was on vacation and not
watching, some went for $60. Only time I've seen them less than
$110-120. Which seems a lot.

I have pretty much decided that I like the passive 1400 display due
to privacy- I use it a lot at work and the viewing angle is actually
nice in that others cannot peek at your stuff as easily. The passive
display on the 5300cs machine I have however I would not be super
happy with, on a computer I use a lot.

That is a bad, BAD noise for a HDD to make.

Yep, same thing happened on my 540 just before the HDD died the death.
Sufficient jostling about might get the drive to work again, for a
short period of time. In my case it was a godsend because I could get
the data off of the system onto anothe networked mac.

It definitively can NOT be the difference between power: the PB100
takes the DC power from it's power supply, which doesn't vary with the
input voltage.

That the FDD gave up the ghost is also indicative...bet the power or
data cable's gotten jostled loose.

Re: 1400cs vs 1400c screens

2002-09-12 Thread Scott Holder

Although I haven't had any experience with the 1400's screens, I can
tell you that going from a passive matrix to active matrix on the Duos
is like night and day. Once you use an active matrix LCD you can't go
back to passive ;)

As for sharpness, if anything it's sharper. Sometimes a little too sharp
as text and such looks a bit more jaggy ;)

I thought I posted this already, but it hasn't shown up on the list, so
here
goes:

Those of you who have swapped a passive 1400 screen for an active one,
is the difference that radical?

Is the 1400c screen as sharp as a typical small desktop monitor?

Any suggestions for sources for the 1400c screen other than eBay?

Thanks,
Spence

Probably not, unless you're very lucky. The charger/discharger is
the most important, as it might let you recover a battery that looks dead.
Try lemswaplist.

PB540 Hard Drive Upgrade

2002-09-12 Thread wlewis

Hello,
I picked up an IBM 1.2 gb (DPRS-21215) scsi disk to upgrade from the 320mb disk
in my 540c. I got the drive installed just fine, formated and have 8.1 and all
of my various bits of software installed. However, when I go to startup without
anything on the external scsci bus, I get the question mark floppy rather than
a happy mac. When I have my other items (an external hard disk, Apple CD-150,
and a Zip drive) connected, everything is happy.

This would seem to be a termination issue, but I can't see where I should need
to do anything. If I understand the repair manual and the technote correctly,
there shouldn't be a problem.

Anyone have any hints, tips, suggestions? I'm on digest mode, so CC's are
appreciated.

Thanks,

William

How have you tested them? In stacked pairs? Stacked with other modules?
Singly?

Seems odd that there'd be trouble with a single 24MB module.

But the stacked module problem is pretty well known. Seems there's an
unsolvable problem with some 1400's - perhaps a memory controller problem? -
wherein they can't use the 4MB or 8MB "Apple slot" module installed above
the 8MB motherboard module. The result is that they cannot have more than
56MB installed. I had one of these - it was a 1400c/166 - which was a jewel
of a PB, except for the 56MB memory limit. It worked great with 2 x 24MB or
1 x 16MB + 1 x 32MB stacked modules. Didn't work with 24MB + 32MB stacked
modules. Worked fine with a G3 upgrade too.
