Does the 6500 have a PCI or CommSlot modem. A PCI card should have
several lights (3 or 4). One will be a 100 light, another a Full
duplex light and one is likely a link light. If the 100 and Full
duplex lights are on then you are operating at full speed. Some PC
Card NICs have lights and some don't. For both you could check Apple
System Profiler. It has fields for Speed and other info although on
mine most are "n/a".

The best way to hook them together is with a 10/100 switch. You can
usually see on the switch what speed each port is operating at.

Flash 6 will see only the latest browsers like IE5, Navigator x.x, Opera 5.
Upgrade to the latest and watch what happens.

Help, my Powerbook 3400 is Dead!

2002-10-24 Thread James Williams
Well, I knew I shouldn't have bragged on my new powerbook 3400.
After working flawlessly for several days, it has died. It started out
by having problems hanging up and locking up during booting up. I did
all the usual things, rebuilding desktop, reset pram, trashed
preferences and it still acted buggy. I decided on a clean reinstall of
the OS from Cd. Halfway through the install, it locked up. When I
pressed the reset button however, it refuses to come back up. I have
tried the power manager reset per instructions from the Service manual,
but all I get is a situation that is as follows:

The machine will not start. When you press and hold the reset button to
reset it, it lights the green sleep led and will not start. When you
press the reset button it extinguishes the led, but still won't start.
If you press the reset again, you get the lit LED situation again.

I have gone through the power manager reset sequence several times, with
no help.
I am beginning to think that either the PM board or the main board is
fried.

Luckily, I have a 90 day warranty on the purchase, but I would really
rather avoid the hassle of shipping it to California and waiting for a
replacement. Any suggestions?

All of the Office 98 apps are actually PPC only. My vote would be to
stay away from Word 6 and use Word 5.1.

AOL 3 will run on a PB190, version 4 might also be 68k I think. Version
5 is PPC only. Don't know if v3 or v4 have any OS 8.1 issues.

PB 190 not starting up

2002-10-24 Thread Nils Mueller-Scheessel
Hi all,

I have got a problem with my PB 190cs: it won't start up, whatever I
do. Plugged in the green light above the screen glows steadily (which
already is, at least in my experience, highly unusual), but it does
not react to any keyboard stroke (or the little button at the back).
I have even tried to remove the PRAM battery, but this does not
change the situation.
Any suggestions are highly appreciated!

Tried this with a pass through terminator from an old HP SCSI scanner (25

closed ones I have are centronics, so I'll still have a bit of cable hanging
off the end if it works. Dorky but doable...

The IBM 2.5" drives (the 340 was IBM OEM to Apple) don't have termination on
the drive - it relies on on board termination; in the case of a powerbook
there are pull-up resistors on the motherboard. They appear to be
insufficent to the task with the newer disk in it. I'd rather avoid the kind
of hardware hacking needed to replace them. ;>

Here's the address for GV SW DLs:

You need the PC card SW v3.0.2, and also grab the 3.06 updater.

IIRC, the tome included with the installer you have can be opeed using
Apple's Tomeviewer utility, allowing you to grab and manually install the
SW. Do a search on Versiontracker for tomeviewer if you don't already
have it.

Re: 3400 and DSL

2002-10-24 Thread Sionnach Aisling

If your IP addy's start with 23.xxx.xxx.xxx, then
those are routable. I took a look last night to
figure out what the other non-routable address scheme
was I couldn't remember and it was 172.16.xxx.xxx, so,
basically, three non-routable schemes:

10.xxx.xxx.xxx
172.16.xxx.xxx
192.168.xxx.xxx

Now if you have 23.xxx.xxx.xxx addresses, then your
ISP has no doubt given you a block of addresses to
use. You could check with them to see which addresses
they are. If you can have up to four machines, then
they've given you four addresses.

If you just change one of the numbers on one of your
other Macs a little and try to use that for a manual
IP for your 3400, if it's out of your given block,
your ISP may drop your service until you call and
straighten it out. If you want to try a static
(manual) IP on the 3400, I'd call them first.

So it sounds like your ISP provided you with the
router and all... Pretty neat. I don't know any ISP's
around here that do that for home accounts. Usually
they just give you 1 routable IP address. Of course,
then you just go out and buy a router, link that to
the routable IP and run non-routable IP's to all your
home PC's. You only have four ports on the router,
but that won't keep you from cascading a hub onto it
;-) I run 8 PC's at once from my connection at home
through a Linksys Router w/ 4 port switch and a
cascaded Bay Networks 8 port hub ;-)

Cheers,
Sionnach

Re: 3400 and DSL

2002-10-24 Thread Sionnach Aisling

Thinking some more about your problem...

I think I remember you saying you had a strange IP
address listed? Or am I getting you confused with
something else I've been working on ;-)

Anyway, if thats the case, then DHCP isn't working for
you.

Straight off, double check all of the settings on your
TCP/IP tab. If they all look right, contact your ISP
and get the block of IP's they assigned you. They'll
give you a range of numbers like 23.xxx.xxx.20-
23.xxx.xxx.24 or something like that. Find out what
two addresses your other Macs are using and which one
your routers using and pick a free one. Assign that
as a manually entered IP address on your 3400. Make
sure you enter the Subnet Mask and Name Server
information (DNS) - very important.

Once this is done, if you don't have a PING program on
your Mac, go to Apples site and download MacTCP Ping.
Using a Ping utility, attempt to PING the IP address
of your Router from the 3400. If you can't ping the
router, try pinging the other Macs... If you can't
ping the other Macs, try pinging yourself.

If you can Ping the router, but you can't access the
internet, it's likely a DNS issue... Try opening your
browser window and instead of typing www.xx, try
typing in an IP address. If you don't know the IP
address of a website, try 161.58.225.20 Thats the IP
address for redriver.com See if you can surf to the
site using IP address rather than name... thats a sure
sign of a DNS issue.

Cheers,
Sionnach

I don't know anything about AOL, but any version of Word up to and including
whatever comes with Office 98 (and maybe beyond) should be fine. Seems to
me 5.1 is the best of the lot -- no annoying assistant popping up to offer

(though this last can be turned off thank goodness).

Re: 3400 and DSL - problem solved

2002-10-24 Thread chouston
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. In the end, it was the simplest
most direct approach that worked: wiping the HD and reinstalling OS 9.1.

Upon startup with the fresh system, I set TCP/IP to Ethernet and Configure
using DHCP server (no IP address or anything else), fired up IE 5.1 and I
was surfing and downloading at super speeds, even on the old 3400 (e.g.
download the Norton Antivirus updates to NAV 7 at over 100K/sec). Web pages
were loading faster than on my G4 Sawtooth. Wow.

And then I set Appletalk to Ethernet, turned on Filesharing and was sharing
files with the Lombard and Sawtooth while surfing the web. Very nice.

So in the end it was indeed a software problem.

Thanks for all your help.

Next step, connecting the 3400 wirelessly to the Lombard (both using Wavelan
Silver cards), and surfing the web through the Lombard (connected to our
router by ethernet cable).

Any advice much appreciated ;-)

Can I use 100BaseT Ethernet (Fast Ethernet)?

2002-10-24 Thread Steven Schario
My source confusion today concerns, as you can tell, 100BaseT Ethernet (Fast
Ethernet). I am pretty sure each of my Ethernet cards, in both my Power
Macintosh 6500/G3 and PowerBook 1400C/G3 are rated 10/100BaseT Ethernet. My
questions are: How can I determine whwther or not I am currently using the
fastest Ethernet possible for my Macs? And secondly, What components are
necessary to achieve the desired connection speed? Granted, this isn't the
PCI-PowerMac list, so assuming my questions cannot be completely answered
here, I've posted the question to that list as well.

Thanks for your time.

PB1400 PC card woes

2002-10-24 Thread Steven Schario
Not long ago, I purchased a PowerBook 1400C. I love it. It came to me with a
Global Village 56K Modem/Ethernet PC card. Upon sliding it into either card
slot however, I receive the following error message, "The correct software
you need to use the PC Card in the 'Upper/Lower PC Card Slot' is not
installed. Do you want to eject the card now?" Each attempt to install GV
software left on the hard disk by the previous owner, results in a request
to insert Disk 1. As you might have guessed, I don't have Disk 1, 2, or 3
for that matter. So I ask you, any idea where can I get the software to make
my PC card usable? Is there Apple software designed solely for the
activation of the slots, or does the proper Global Village software cure the
problem?

Thanks again,

Steve

2002-10-24 Thread Steven Schario
I am considering a wireless network for my PowerBook and PM 6500. Anyone who
would be willing to share any positive and/or negative experiences would be
appreciated.

Thanks again,
Steve

Re: PB1400 PC card woes

2002-10-24 Thread Roger Volk
Steve,

The proper software should be available at the Global Village web site, if
not you should be able to talk to thier tech support and obtain the required
drivers and possibly even the documention.

OS 8.5 Problems

2002-10-24 Thread Roger Volk
I just completeld a clean install of OS 8.5 followed by the 8.6 update
on a PB 3400c. Several items that were to have been in a Folder called
Portables in Apple Extras were not installed. I reformated and
initialized and attempted a second installation the Prompts indicated I
was successful, but again no folder. Is there a special version of this
system for PowerBooks?

Thanks
Roger

2300 Modem

2002-10-24 Thread Albert L. Lilly III
Hi all,

Big problems. I've installed a Global Village 19.2 modem in the
2300. Now, it won't shut down. It runs fine, but the minute I go to
shut down, it won't. It pops in the speaker, and then locks. System
8.1, 48 MB RAM, if that makes a difference. Global Village Software
2.5.5 installed. Free PPP installed.

I am relatively new to all of this termination stuff; but I DO know that the
5xx series of powerbooks are not terminated internally. I would buy one of
those closed-end terminators and plug it (w/ the hdi-30) in the back of the
540c to close it off; in the short term.

For the long haul, I would get an internal terminator for the IBM drive.
Maybe it is not terminated and the Apple 340mb HD was?
