1400 Web Browser.

2002-12-02 Thread Jim Lind
I have a PowerBook 1400cs/133 with 60 Megs of RAM if I remember correctly.
I've tried all kinds of combonations of Operating Systems and Browsers and never
found one that allowed me to use my Excite.com web-based e-mail very well. Any
suggestions? (Other than moving my e-mail to POP3).

Re: Random freezes on PB 5300c

2002-12-02 Thread Nils Mueller-Scheessel
Hi all,

contrary to what I have stated several days ago, the problems with my
PB 5300c have remained.
The symptoms are:
- random freezes during startup or later
- when pushing the start button (with and without the power cord
plugged in), a klicking sound can be heard, but nothing happens.
Sometimes, command-option-start helps, but sometimes not (in this
case, the reset button is the last resort).

I am pretty sure that it is not a software issue, but I have tried
everything else I can think of (replaced keyboard, track pad, power
cord, removed extra RAM). Can the logic board or the built-in RAM be
the culprit? Every hint and every suggestion is very, very much
appreciated.

Nils

Three in One for 3400

2002-12-02 Thread Cliff Rediger
Can anyone with a PB3400 and running 8.6 recommend a three-in-one
printer/scanner/copier.

I looked at the current HPs but they don't seem to make anything for
less than a G3 .

Thanks,
Cliff

I guess all I can say is that I used OS 9.1 and IE 5.1 on a 5300c and
it worked, albiet slowly. This was to access Yahoo and Hotmail web
mail among other things.

I am suggesting that it is not the powerbook. As long as the other
programs on the computer are working fine, it is probably a software
issue. The most probable cause is a web browser that does not have all
of the options Excite.com thinks you should (if they are using Flash or
Java etc.). I would install a fairly new OS (9.1+) and then try to
update your web browser if possible. If that doesn't work, try using a
new browser, like Netscape. The problem you may run into is that the
1400cs isn't made to run today's browsers, which eat memory and
resources, so you may experience some system lag. I don't know if this
will help, but it is what I would do if my 1400cs would ever have a
problem.

It is not so much processor requirement, but rather USB connectivity. Is your
PowerBook 3400c cardbus-enabled for USB?

renewed book

2002-12-02 Thread Rick McCutcheon
Just a quick note to say that I finally had new pram/backup batteries
installed into my 1400 by a service technician last week. Of all the
things I've done, this has to be the smartest. Many little inconsistent
quirks have disappeared. I say this to encourage those who use 1400s which
haven't had the batteries replaced to consider it if you have any question
in your mind at all about whether to do it. It's just my experience --
others may feel differently.

Cheers,
Rick

Yes, I can do USB with a PCMCIA card. But, even the bottom grade HP 3
or 4 in one requires minimum G3. Their modle 750 says on the box it's
OS 8.6 compatible, but their CD lists only OS 9 and X.

So, I was wondering if I might pick up an older model that did the
multiple trick.

I concur. I think trying to run OS 9.2.2 with 64 mb RAM is akin to towing a
full-sized mobile home with an VW bug. You can do it, but only in first
gear, very slow.

I'm betting the thing is depending VR. Is your HD busy all the time?

Get more RAM any ol' way.

BTW, I'm curious why Lombards would be considered OT for this list. It's a
PowerBook.

Best regards,
Ken N.

Weird Restart

2002-12-02 Thread Jim Lucas
All of a sudden, my PB 1400 cs does this wierd restart when I shut her
down. It matters not whther I shut her down using the shut down menu or the
power key. She shuts down, then after a few seconds starts back up again. I
have found that if I either push the reset button onthe back as it is
restarting, or unplug the power chord, this seems to stop the restart. It
just started doing that today.
