Where is the best place to buy a new battery, or is anyone rebuilding the old ones? Thanks Mr. Shelley Herman Dpending on your SCSI cable length, the importance of termination is greater or lesser. But, the last device and first device in a SCSI chain should be terminated If the Zip drive is the only external SCSI device be sure to set its termination switch ON. The cable connector that plugs into the 180 must have only 29 pins (one corner pin missing). The Zip drive must NOT be a parallel port drive intended for the PC. If you don't have the Iomega extension installed you will need an app called Iomega Guest. You can get it here: http://www.rapidnet.com/~gmc/Iomega%20Guest.sea.hqx The icon for this app looks like an extension icon but it is NOT. you simply double click this app's icon like any other app. It does NOT go in the extension folder. System 7.5x is a free download from Apple. It should have any modem software you need I think. eBay sometimes has NEW batteries for that machine. I bought one and it works great (6 hours of low processor, no backlight use) with my 145b. I will say this..it was new and in the box. It would not take a charge at all at first. It would kill the computer when inserted. I used a bench supply to zap it (10 amps applied briefly). Then it worked normally in the computer. Greg __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Re: Looking for a good multimedia laptop.
I would DISAGREE with Mr Dennis on this. Yes, if you could, I'd suggest external speakers. But for general use, the 3400 is MUCH, MUCH louder than the 1400, and the acoustic clarity is significantly better. I spent 9 years doing professional audio (ie designing sound systems and running them) around the world, and one pet project was the study of acoustics of laptops' sound output. The Powerbooks were by far significantly better than any other models (Compaq Presario's had a tolerable second, due to good speaker placement and some help by Bose (no high's, no low's, must be Bose!).. THe 3400 Kanga outperformed every other Powerbook to date (our last comparison test was on Pismo's iBooks), both in terms of volume and clarity. Of course that may all mean nothing to you who need something for a specific project (ie., your son), but I would suggest that you consider a 3400c (or Kanga) before giving up completely. The Clamshell iBook is not going to be any improvement over the 1400.. A single speaker, same size, same quality--you'll not do any better.. The Dual USB iBook is even worse. Headphones are a great idea, though you may of course deal with other issues (does he put up with headphones or not, and can he be monitored with headphones). From a professional perspective, I'd NOT recommend headphones, especially in-the-ear style) for daily use. The reason is that many folks do permanent damage to their ears by repeatedly running volumes too high, without realizing it. THe worst case of this is when you've got a speaker/earpiece in one ear, and nothing in the other ear. Your brain doesn't listen to just ONE ear--it combines volume from both ears, so you tend to run volume too loud in one ear (if you've got just one earpiece in). i worked with some folks on this, about 5yrs ago, when the in-the-ear monitoring systems were just coming out.. Many musicians did permanent damage to their ears using these systems improperly. THat's why I tend to frown on headphones for daily use... TO summarize--the best sound you'll find in any Powerbook is the 3400/Kanga. It is LOUD (about 12db louder at 1meter than the next closest Powerbook--the Wallstreet), and the full-frequency range is nearly 4x's better than any other Powerbook. Don't even compare these to PC's--you'll be horribly dissappointed.. Re: Processor Speed Apple Profiler
From: David Allen Subject: Re: Processor Speed Apple Profiler Believe the software that came with your upgrade. It is a common problem for Apple Profiler to have odd readouts with non-standard CPUs. My 1400s , #1-G3/217 @ 217 and # 2-G3/333 @ 333 according to Sonnet, Powerlogix and Newertech software ( I've tested with all 3 apps. All were within a 1 MHz spread of the 217/333 respectively.) vs 125/190 respectively, according to Profiler. ) This happens with the Desktop Macs as well as the PBs. My PPC Desktop Macs all show much slower than their actual G3 upgrade speeds, but the speed difference is huge compared to what profiler says it should be. I've clocked as high as 16 times faster operation for the same work with a G3/400 vs the 604e/200, in the same motherboard. It looks like Profiler gets confused if it doesn't find particular Apple factory type readings. David Allen Eric Riedl wrote: I have a G3 400Mhz card in my PB1400. Apple Profiler shows 200Mhz, while Sonnet's Metronome software (which came with the processor card) shows 400Mhz. Which one is correct? Thanks, E Riedl I posed this question to Sonnet when the L2 cache went out in my 333mhz card. It showed up as 83mhz when that happened. Their explanation was that basically no one else can accurately measure their processors. Since the 1400 only has a 33.3mhz bus, the fastest theoretical speed would be the 333 (10x multiplier). Anything over that and you get into what Sonnet calls bus doubling. Re: Happy holiday of your particular belief system!
So says the Pope. However, like many Christian holidays, it was conveniently scheduled at the same time as all the earlier non-Christian holidays. In all actuality, this holiday season of Christmas has always been more Pagan than Christian, with it's associations of the Celtic fertility rites. As a matter of fact, the Christian version of this holiday wasn't celebrated in Ireland until the late fifth century; in England, Switzerland, and Austria until the seventh; in Germany until the eighth; and in the Slavic lands until the ninth and tenth. Use your Powerbook to Google solstice holiday and expand your horizons a bit. (Required on-topic content.) Jim [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Please pass the barf bag. Re: Looking for a good multimedia laptop.
I have a 3400c and it is certainly quite loud. I would also say the sound quality is quite tinny in that there isn't much in the way of bass, but that aspect may not be so important to you as the volume. As the 3400c can be picked up so cheaply now I would recommend it highly as the RAM can be upgraded to 144mb and it is easy to fit a bigger hard drive if needed. How can there show VM on in the Control Panel, but off in About This Computer? VM is on because that is what it is set to but if it can't actually be used for some reason it won't. Much like your light switch being on in a power failure. Anyone have a clue what's going on? Any help appreciated. Do a get info on the CF Drive and see what it is formatted as. If it's formatted as a PC drive then that is likely the issue. It needs to be formatted as a Mac volume to work. -- Clark Martin Redwood City, CA, USA Macintosh / Internet Consulting [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm a designated driver on the Information Super Highway -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Mac serial ports equivalent to a PC?
At 05:26 PM 12/23/2002, Scott Holder typed thusly: The Mac serial ports are compatible with PC serial ports on a hardware level - they both communicate with the RS-232 standard. The main question is going to be a matter of drivers. In all likelihood, VPC would indeed work fine. Minor nit here - it's a matter of drivers and cables. g Of course, it's pretty much just a matter of finding an old cable for a Mac modem and hooking it up - round at one end, rectangular D shape at the other. Yes, the Mac serial cables *are* so much neater and compact. g -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Sometimes it's a bit flakey. If that doesn't work, booting the mac with a formatted disk in the zipdrive has always worked for me (across about 4 macs) dana -- http://www.danamania.com/ -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
