Re: Lind Supercharger II

Greetings,
Recently, one of the listers posted an investigative query re: the
feasability of running a service that involved their Lind supercharger.
Reach me off list, please.
Thank you,

Powerbook 3400/200

2003-02-06 Thread THE ROCK
I have two questions:

1. On one side of my powerbook there is a receptacle for my floppy and i
imagine that's where the cdrom drives resides too. Now, on the opposite
side of the power book is another receptacle with a small opening
(compared to the floppy receptacle on the opposing side), what is this
second receptacle used for? A few ideas are coming to mind but I'd
somebody who knows to clear the air for me.

2. I bought a bigger hard drive some time back. How do I replace a
powerbook (3400) hd?
TIA.
Peter.

Re: Comparison: 540 vs 190

2003-02-06 Thread macnifico1
Hi!

I used to recommend the 540c to friends with low budgets and not too
high needs. Just a little web surfing, some docs or excel spreadsheets,
etc. These are good introductory computers for them.
However, lately I've been won over by the 190cs. The screen is not as
bad as it sounds (passive). It has the PC Card slots, with plenty of 56K
modems available. (I'd recommend the 3Com MegaHertz, the drivers are
great and they go up to 50K in my local connections. Most others top at
45K). And if they want, they later can add a Wireless Ethernet card.
BTW, I disagree with Drew about the CD burning. I have used various
brands of burners with Toast 4 Deluxe, and they work fine, at 2x a bit
slow but bearable.
As most of this PB's have smallish Hard Drives, I do a burn of the
System and applications and give them for safekeeping. That way, if
something happens, I just have to carry my external CD hardware and rein
stall everything.
Oh, yes, MacOS 8.1 in Spanish is the best version IMHO.
Of course if you have a little more money I'd recommend the 3400c in any
of their versions. Much faster, and they do run more modern software.
(The 1400, albeit a good computer, has a very slow graphics subsystem
for my taste.)
Best regards.

Re: Connecting my Newton to my PB 3400!

2003-02-06 Thread Brian

If you aren't using Appletalk much for other things, getting it set up can
be confusing.

What error do you get, if any?

Easiest way to hook up your MP- turn off Appletalk in the chooser on the
3400 (to make sure the serial port is "free"). Sometimes you still have to
set it to a different port via the control panel, too, but not often.

Run Newton Connection Utilities (connection "kit" is for older Newton
models and won't work with the 130). Preferences-- set to "serial" not to
appletalk.

Make sure NCU is running on the powerbook, Hit the dock on the Newton,
select to connect via Serial not Appletalk, select connect on the Newton,
you should be hooked up.

For many Newton FAQs see www.unna.org and the FAQ links; also see
www.newtontalk.net for info on a nice 1600 member mailing list (high
traffic, be warned) and also links to searchable mailing list archives.

You can also get it going by Appletalk, but serial is easier sometimes if
you haven't used Appletalk much in the past- there are a couple things to
configure for Appletalk in general, it's not hard though.

HTH.

communicate with my Powerbook 3400/180. I am running 9.1 on it and I am

Screen prices are very high, but you should be able to pick up an
entire 1400 on ebay for about $90-140. I have one that I was going to
part out on various sites and would be happy to sell it to you. It is a
passive display though, so it isn't as sharp and clear as an active
display.

Sure. I'm definitely not saying it can't be done, it just isn't a
whole lot of fun and can take up to 74 minutes just to burn the CD.
The SCSI Manager 4.3 bit I only brought up because some software
likes you to have it (like later versions of Toast and SCSIProbe).

I should have pointed out, though, that the 190cs requires
termination. I don't have a 540c to judge this against, but in my
experience, getting a 5300-class machine to work with SCSI devices
can require a rather lengthy and frustrating Voodoo dance. That's
where the +1 for the 540c comes in! ;-)

Peace,
Drew

I agree. I've burned CDs using an older version of Toast on both

CD-R and SCSI Mgr 4.3

Drew is absolutely right about the lack of oomph being an impediment. But just to
be clear, SCSI Manager 4.3 isn't strictly required to enable the burning of CDs.
As long as you don't mind recording at 1x or 2x, and leaving the machine alone
while it burns away, you can use any '030 Mac. This includes models like the
PB140, the SE/30, and the IIsi. I've burned CDs with the 140 and 540c with no
problem, using Toast 3.5.x. Just don't get greedy about speed, or you'll create
lots of coasters.

These old machines are simply amazing!

Indeed. All my PowerBooks take a Torx-8 (you can get them at Sears
for about $3) screw driver (that's a Duo 230, 5300cs/ce, and
Wallstreet). Apple seems to love these things.

From time to time, I've run into Torx-6 sized screws in Apple
products as well. Of course, my Wallstreet uses a Phillips-head for
"user serviceable" parts.

Your 1400c probably uses the Phillips because it's not an
Apple-original design. The case was original designed by Taiwanese
manufacturer Quanta and retooled by Apple to include the mac specific
ports (SCSI, serial, ADB, etc) and the BookCover. Also, Apple's
target audience for this machine was younger. "As an entry-level
product, we wanted Epic's design to attracted a more youthful
audience" says Lawrence Lam, a designer on the Epic's IDg team.
("AppleDesign" page 264).

Peace,
Drew

P.S. - I _HIGHLY_ recommend the AppleDesign book by Paul Kunkel to
anyone who enjoys Apple's industrial design and their history. The
book is fascinating! If you only get it to look at the pretty
pictures of prototypes, it is worthwhile. I used to leave it on my
coffee table while in college, and the oohs and aahs of people
thumbing through it were classic!

Roger,

Yes. Palms desktop is a free download and will work
for contacts and whatnot even if you don't have a Palm
to use with it. Also, should you ever choose to get a
Palm, all your data will synch easily.

Bill,

WHat specs can you give on your 3400? Is it a 180,
200, or 240? How much RAM? How big a hard drive?

I guess tried and true OS would be 8.6 That should
run fine for you Roger with 80MB of RAM. I just put
9.1 on my 3400/200 with 80MB of RAM and it runs
fine... Startup time is slightly longer, but
applications seem to launch a little quicker.

Thanks for comments, Sionnach.
On the Palm issue, from the manual it looks like you can synch between two copies on a
powerbook and a desktop machine, but details are scanty and I haven't tried it yet.
Anyone confirm it's do-able?

The Palm software is also used for the Handspring line of PDA's which I use

Software & Setup on 3400c

2003-02-06 Thread Bill Hatchell
So far as I know it is the base model, 180 MHz with the 1.2 Gb HDD. It
has 32 MB installed memory but I plan to max out the memory as soon as
I get it. What I don't know is what OS it will have already installed.
These things came originally with OS7.6. I want to install 8.5 and
then update that to 8.6 'cause I have an install CD for 8.5 which
should work. I have bad phone line connections here so will try to use
the 3400's ethernet and connect using internet cable just like I have
for my other PB (Pismo). Is it the right flavor of ethernet for this?
Thanks for your questions and response!

Re: 5300c os, surfing, e-mail word proc...

2003-02-06 Thread John Cate
I wouldn't even think of running any 7.xx versions on it unless I just had a
very small amount of RAM installed. They're all buggy and written almost
entirely in 680x0 code, which just makes it dog-slow on the cacheless 100
MHz 603e installed in a standard 5300. If you have about 24 MB or more, you
can run 8.1 on it, and I feel that's the best OS for a 5300. If you need the
features of 8.6, you can get by with it, but it will slow you down quite a
bit.

Don't even think about OS 9. It takes forever to load and will use up way
too much RAM.

I've had the best results with installing 8.1 and then turning off all the
extensions I didn't need. It takes up about 11 MB of RAM; doesn't boot very
fast but performance is acceptable once you get it going. It's much better
since I upgraded the slow IBM hard disk last week.

Obviously, you are in Australia, so I might be able to suggest another
alternative. I recently bought a powerbook 1400c for the princly sum of

Chances are, you will get a minimum of 750MB, which should be plenty of room
for basic word processing etc. Once again, I got one with 1.3 GB, but like I
said, luck of the draw. The 1400 has an ATA HDD.

No idea. I have a different machine I use to burn stuff, so haven't even
tried on this one. I assume it would work though...

PCMCIA slots are standard on the 1400, but aren't cardbus compliant. CD-Rom
modules are avaliable, but will cost you a bit extra. Floppy is of course
standard.

I got a 28Kbps/10BT pc card included, which covers me for my needs.

Bigger screen, 11.3 inches, better resolution, 800*600 (opposed to the
640*480) and more colours (16 Bit vrs 8bit)

1 battery bay, not particullarly smart, but mine lasts about 2 1/2 hours,
with max brightness and no HDD spin-down
