WaveLAN driver URL

2003-06-13 Thread Tom Roth

Thanks to Bill Cornett's suggestion of doing a Get Info on the downloaded WaveLAN
driver file it showed the URL that I had downloaded it from. I had forgotten that
information gets put there.

http://workingwireless.net/wireless/Installers/WaveLAN%c2%ae%20Install%20Disk.sit

There are a number of other drivers available here too. Just use:

http://workingwireless.net/wireless/Installers/

Nothing newer than May of 2002.

Hmmm.

Good find.

But did you try here?

ftp://ftp.orinocowireless.com/pub/software/ORiNOCO/PC_Card/MacOS/
ftp://ftp.orinocowireless.com/pub/software/IEEE/PC_CARD/APPLE/
The first URL has versions 6.3 and up. The second URL has older
versions. I suppose that it is split up that way because of the
brand change for the card. Older cards were WaveLAN cards. Newer
ones are plain ORiNOCO cards.

Nothing there said WaveLAN so I didn't know for sure what those were but I just
tried the second URL listed and downloaded a file and after it decoded and unstuffed
then it said WaveLAN. The top link is where I got my Orinoco driver but good luck
finding that on ther website. For some reason you can only find it on their FTP site.

Powerbook 5300ce Ram Limit

2003-06-13 Thread Jeff Hewitt
The stated ram limit for the 5300ce is 64 megs. I have noticed that are ram
upgrades for the grayscale and cs 5300 in th configuration of 48, and 56
megs. After looking up these ram modules, I was informed by a web based ram
dealer's site that these modules are not compatible with the 5300ce. This
seems odd to me. Did the ce use a different ram slot or something? or is
there another reason why the limit remains at 64 megs? Something like the
dirty roms of the plus' perhaps?

Again, Google to the rescue. If you Google the following: GCC laser
printer (i.e., laser printer in quotes as a single phrase), then just a
little ways down the results page (if you have it set to 100 hits/page)
you'll find all kinds of places selling GCC printer supplies.

Also, since it's a GCC, the proper name is likely 'Personal Laser Printer'
and the appropriate drivers are going to be listed on their page as 'PLP'.

Dead 140 - revived - partially

Afternoon All
Turns out by using 'Battery Amnesia' on my 160 on the best battery of
the three I have I got one up to about 5 minutes use. Lo and behold
the 140 will boot from that battery!

So - I have proven to my satisfaction that a 140 will not boot without
a battery or with a very bad one.
Does anyone know how to 'bypass' the battery so it will boot without a
battery like the 160 will?

The 64 mb limit is a system limitation for the 5300 series, part of the
mobo design, afaik, like the 1400.

Some 5300's have 8 megabytes of RAM on the motherboard. They can take
both 56 and 48 MB modules, since that would raise the 'books to 64 and
56 mb respectively.

The 5300ce has 16 megs on board, and so it cannot use the 56 mb card.
Why it can't use the 48, I don't know. Data Memory Systems lists a 48 MB
card for the 5300ce...

Many PowerBook 3400c unis are CardBus-capable, but some are not. In any case, you do
not need to spend $100+ for a FireWire card just to try out. You can buy a
refurbished card from SmartDisk.com for $16 as follows:

I had the MCE conversion on my 3400c and found the firewire extentions
beyond OS 9.1 not reliable. I'd start with the 9.1 firewire ext and work
backwards if not successful. Good luck.

Re: Powerbook 5300ce Ram Limit

2003-06-13 Thread Brian

The 5300ce has 16 megs on board, and so it cannot use the 56 mb card.
Why it can't use the 48, I don't know. Data Memory Systems lists a 48 MB
card for the 5300ce...

I haven't tested it, but on Windows machines with RAM limits, and for sure
on my 6400, usually the extra RAM doesn't kill anything, it just gets
wasted and not seen.

But the 1400 and 5300 are weird in several ways. A good Mac sales place
like www.macsales.com would be able to say for sure, if you tried their
tech support (or people here too, I'm sure :)

I've got a Newer FW2Go card and it works on my _non-upgraded_ 3400s, with
the caveat that I had to trim the end of the card to allow it to fit into
the cage.

I haven't tested lots of devices, but I do recall for sure it working
with a Lacie 60GB desktop drive. I've got a bunch of other FW devices but
heck if I can remember if I tried anything else. Been weeks since I
played, I'm afraid my memory has many fawlty circuits.
