powersupply for 3400c and 5300c
Hi, Last week I purchased two very cheap powerbooks, a 3400c and a 5300c. They were so cheap because from both the power supply is missing :-( As replacements are hard to come by in the Netherlands so I want to order an universal notebook adapter for 24V/45W. The problem is now that the plug needed for the powerbook is not available for these adapters. Now I'm thinking of ordering a separate plug and soldering this to the adapter cord but the problem I now have is that I cannot figure out the type of the plug needed. Can anyone supply me with the name of this type of plug or a typenumber? Thanks in advance, Jorick Astrego -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Dan Palka's 3400 (and mine)
Hi Dan, Don't give up. Some stores will take the old board as a trade-in. But before that - did you try to fully discharge the mob - unplug the PRAM battery, press on the start button for at least a minute (or is it the restart bar on the rear panel?). I will not give up yet (can't boot from the internal HDD - getting an IDE adapter for cheap to see if it will boot a desktop Mac), replace the internal HDD (also cheap cost for small 1 or 2 Gig drive). All HDD utilities say the present HDD is ok. But, the Sound function (start-up bong) is also not working - i.e. the HDD isn't spinning, and sure seems to like to fall asleep mighty quick). All these issues arise when the external SCSI HDD or other device is absent (not powered up). Inbetween the battery bay and the CD-Rom bay is a small rectangular opening - is that used to discharge the mob - it does seem to provide an opening to the mob grounding cage. Thank you, Bruce. On a 3400 related note, are you or anyone else aware that the OS 9 installer HDD driver update changes some code in the ROM? Thx George No. the ROM in a 3400 (and all macs prior to the BW G3's) is really just that, a read only memory chip, not alterable at all. The HDD updater alters things in the boot sector(s) of the HDD, and perhaps something in the PRAM. PRAM can be reset by booting up while holding down the command-option-p-r keys. Appletalk, or lack of...
Ok, somehow I've lost the capability for Appletalk on my 1400. I had been rebooting around between 8.6 and 9.1 testing those Quickcam drivers, that's the only thing new. Now, I cannot point Appletalk at the ethernet slot- either with a 3com589d card or a wirelss card, both of which usually work fine for Appletalk. error has no number, just basically en error occurred with appletalk , make sure your network settings are correct. I've checked that ethertalk etc extensions are there, trashed related prefs, zapped PRAM, and reinstalled the 9.l update. Are there hidden files related to appletalk? It's weird that both booting into 8.6 and 9.1 are failing. I don't wish to do a clean install of 9.1 from a 1X external CD, but might do so as a last resort. Re: Appletalk, or lack of...
Hmm. Let's see if I get this correct: Use Sherlock to find the file AppleShare PDS Before you press search, use the edit button to select the invisible option, then do your search; you should (in OS 9 at least) get the indication that one file exists. Drag it to the trash, then pressOK to the warning that the Finder can't put it in the trash: it must be deleted immediately. Restart (or maybe you don't have to; I sometimes through away the Finder pref./ also, then rebooted) and try your Chooser-AppleShare connection now. Hope it helps! Re: Powerbook 190 overclocking/detonation
Hi again, I picked up a cheap-ish 190cs on eBay a while ago and earlier tonight tried to upgrade it with an apple video card and IR board, and replace the RAM board. It used to work slightly dodgily, so I thought the RAM board might have been fried. However I got the old green light when I restarted it. I tried booting it without the battery and it started to make an interesting burning plastic smell... Anyway - it may well now be a gonner, but I took it apart to have a look and it has several dodgy looking modifications to the motherboard. I wonder if it has been overclocked unstabily - the mods are (i have no idea about circuit diagrams in ASCII, so wish me luck): Further to this, my 'book 190's just packed up with the exact same problem as this. I've had it for about a year now, so it's worked for a while. But it has been sitting on the shelf for a couple of months - since I got a 5300. Could this period of hibernation have something to do with the problem perhaps? Cheers, Evan. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
