I'm just curious what it is exactly. I think it's an IRTalk
(PowerBook LocalTalk over IR) to wired LocalTalk, optionally to the
Printer Port on a Mac. Is it short range as in desktop or longer,
across the room. How close am I? I've seen it at a local store (I
think they still have them even).

I have several Photonics Game Net devices which are similar but I
don't know if they are compatible or such. Originally these were
sold for general Mac Networking in offices and such but as that
market dried up they seem to have targeted it at game players. They
plug into the ADB port for power and a serial port. It transmits and
receives IR across the room at LocalTalk speeds. You can connect one
to a LocalTalk Network and add the IR network(s) to an overall LAN.
I used it before I got 802.11b. Not as fast, not as versatile and
more cumbersome having an external device that must be aimed, but it
did work and was more convenient than stringing a cable.

2003-10-01 Thread KG
I got my 5300c/100 back from Apple REA yesterday; I sent it back one more
time before the deadline because the power connector broke off again. They
replaced the logic board and even replaced some of the case plastics again
even though they were fine--it looks like they improved the quality again.
It's almost as sturdy as my 3400's case plastic now.

Scott, you're almost certainly SOL, I'm sorry to say. AFAIK, you *must*
follow Apple's procedure, outlined on their web page. That means staying
on the line forever as a customer service rep verifies your PB's serial
number(s), asks some other questions, then assigns you a case number.
Then they send you a postage-paid box. I am pretty sure that they will
not accept a PB that hasn't gone through this procedure.

I hope you were able to contact them to do it their way!

The manual (on the disk) talks about having to input in hex and gives a
hexadecimal conversion chart. I don't have the manual with me (disk or
the printout I made) but I think the hex was only necessary for a couple
of situations. (the 3 WiFi networks I've connected to so far have all
been open public ones and I haven't had to try my hand at hex
conversions.)

1400 "build-in" ethernet... worth?

2003-10-01 Thread Ruffin Bailey
Thought it'd be nice to have "dongle-less" ethernet for my 1400, and
looked on eBay for an internal, proprietary-slot ethernet card. Found one.

With over a day left it's already up to $36 -- nearly half of what I
paid for my 1400!!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2755773639&category=44926

Is this common? There's not much info in the "completed search" section
of eBay that I turned up easily. Just seems awfully steep, and
surprisingly more than I'd paid for wireless on the same machine!

Looks like another reason to stalk eBay for good PB 1400 packages with
the whole slew, from CD-ROM to power supply to ethernet to RAM -- to G3,
etc etc etc. You can really make out buying that way. Piecing together
seems to equal crazy 'spensive money-wise [if less so time-wise].

Thanks,

Ruffin Bailey

The software/firmware included was ...

1) GlobalFAX 2.5.5, and

2) GlobalFAX OCR 1.0.1

... so these modems are/were both 19.2 kb/sec enabled, and PowerPC enabled,
straight out of the box.

The firmware included with the PowerBook 500 itself was an older version, one
which would seldom, if ever, achieve even 14.4 kb/sec, and was not PowerPC
compatible.

The actual modem hardware was identical, based upon my examination of several

Sadly, the basic driver package is not available for downloading. You have to
have a friend make a copy for you as GV's successor "lost" the archive of
that release during GV's bankrupty and its later asset sale to Boca (or whomever).

The GV archive has the update and the update to the update, however, and full
"retail" packs of the modem come with either the original (i.e., non-updated)
version, or the updated version (which doesn't require any updating).

Shreve Systems was selling these modems in full "retail" packs around last

PowerBook 500 series modems

2003-10-01 Thread VicNaz1
The one and only internal modem ever made for the PowerBook 500 series was
the Global Village PowerPort Mercury 19.2 Kbps speed V.42 bis modem. It was
about the most advanced modem of it's day for that speed and with appropriate
compression and clean phone lines it actually delivers about the same performance
as many 28.8 modems. Unfortunately the clean phone lines part is hard in some
places and indeed, some modems at AOL and other ISPs don't even attempt to
pick up the phone line at the 19.2 speed any more. They just pick up at 14.4
sometimes.

If you have the original NON-PowerPC cpu daughtercard installed in the unit
you can use any of the PCMCIA (PC Card) cage option for the left hand side
batery bay and use a modern PCMCIA card modem to get on the internet. You can also
use an external modem attached to the serial port. If you have any form of
the PowerPC upgrades for the PowerBook 500 series you can use an external
serial port modem but only the Rev. C version of the PCMCIA card cage will work for
PCMCIA stuff.

When I catch my breath I'll write more. There are also modem driver issues
for those original internal PowerPort Mercury modems.

Victor Nazarian

PC Card software? I didn't install anything specific for the Rev.C

the modem card I tried as an experiment (someone else's so I couldn't keep

works well when I can get to an access point, too. Is there something I

Not as far as I am aware, however Apple do warn against trying to apply the

If I can ever get a rev 'C' I intend to find out the differences, with luck

What do the Rev. C's go for these days?

Also, I hear that once you wrangle a Rev C. cage for the 5xx, if you install
anything other than v.2.0 of the PC Card software, it will irrevocably damage
the Rev. C. True?

Thanks...

The PCMICIA cage for the 5xx series plugs into the left battery slot.
It's pretty specific to the blackbird series. (I was lucky to snag a
rev.c off of eBay--there's a Rev. B on there right now, but the c's show
up fairly often)

Hello Howard:

My 540's have 19.2 internal modems, one from Apple, one from GV, there
were a few other makes. I believe that GV also made faster modems for
PB 5X0s as there are Mercury (mine), Silver, and Gold models of the GV
PowerPort modems for PB 5X0s.

Hello Jeff:

There is another possible issue here of making sure that the modem
settings in the PowerBook Setup control panel are set to either
"Compatible" or "Normal". If those settings are not in the PB Setup cp
then they should be in the cp for your specific modem. Try each setting
and see if that works. It is also usually a good idea to make sure that
AppleTalk is off when trying to use a modem.

Good Luck!

Sincerely yours, Grizzlygiant

Hello DPrice:

My first suggestion is to take the 'Book into a dark area when the
screen fades out and see if the fluorescent backlight is still on. As
the other respondent suggested, it could be a failing backlight, if the
screen is going dark and no light is seen emanating from the screen when
it is in a dark area. If instead, the screen is still lit, that would
suggest that the problem has to do with the contrast of the screen.

In my experience, when the backlight is turned off with the machine on,
the screen becomes dark, and I'll wait until you reply to this before I
stick my power supply in my battery bay (Hee, Hee)

Do you think a PCMCIA from an old 5300 may work on these? If I can find an
old one I'll try it out and let everyone know.
