Re: Shutdown hang with 9.2.2 on PB3400

2004-01-11 Thread Gary D. Adams
Ben:

I had 9.1 running on the machine with the Airport drivers installed via
TomeViewer before I went to 9.2.2. It was fine at that point and didn't
hang when shutting down. I think (but I'm not sure because I don't have
the machine booted up right now) that I have Time Server set to
manual--I usually do. Usually zapping the PRAM will allow it to shut
down properly the next time--if that provides any clues.

I have no cards in mine, and it's a completely clean install.

But I have a pretty strong suspicion that it is network related -
prime suspects are the network time server and os update features. Any
thoughts? What are your suspects?

Also, Have you tried copying bits of 9.2.2 and running them under 9.1?
I've heard of people doing this with the finder and OT extensions, but
not tried yet ( I have to use this machine for work as well as playing
with it..)

Re: Sonnet G3 Orinoco 802.11b in 1400?

2004-01-11 Thread Brian
It is odd. I did a clean install of 8.5 which didn't have any trouble
rebooting, and I fired up Civilization 1 just to test. Seemed to
work, but starting Civilization 1 by double-clicking a save game
brought on a hard lock, which it also did under 8.6. Go figure.
(Fwiw, I also somehow have color now in Civ 1, which I haven't had in
years, having lost the color data disc. It really is a twilight zone
episode by now, though the unhappy
Civ 1 locks up the computer, hard, when run on my 9.1 Sonnet G3/400. I
asked about it a while back but no one replied; I never found a way to
be able to run it.

Daggnabbit, modem card problems

2004-01-11 Thread Darkwolf45
I just bought a 56k PCMCIA card modem for my PB 1400. The card in question is Viking
Components PC Card Modem, 56k.
First of all, the software disk that came with it seems to be damaged. I was unable
to retrieve data off it, depsite the fact that everything came sealed brand new in
box. I assume that this is an old item that was just never sold, though, since it
came with a brand new AOL 4.0 disk inside. In anyevent, I can't get this little guy
to work.
The problem seems to be that my computer doesn't seem to recognize its PCMCIA slots.
It workwed when I had my GV powerport platinum pro card installed, but the port that i
had selected was named powerport PC card.
I'm running OS 9.1
Powerbook 1400c/166, 233 mHz Vimage processor installed
64 megs RAM, 15.10 gig HD

Oh yes, there was one other thing: does anyone have a clue where i can get a copy of
the Vimage drivers for that processer?

archos jukebox recorder v2 and powerbook 3400

2004-01-11 Thread H
Does anyone on the list run anything like this (ie any
usb 1.1 external hard drive/mp3 player not an iPod?)
I'm running a 3400 under 8.6, using a macally cardbus
pcmcia usb. First time I plugged it in, it saw this
just fine, mounted on the desktop, I copied files to
it, no problem.

Second time I plugged it in, the pb asked me if I
wanted to initialize the disk because it was
unreadable. Won't mount the volume. System profiler
sees it and can correctly identify the device on the
bus as an archos product. Does not mount in the
finder. What to do?

I'd been playing with an archos jukebox player 6000,
and it was smooth as silk from the powerbook to the
desktop iMac (BTW, the ajrv2 won't mount on the iMac
either, didn't even mount on first try, gave me the
do you want to initialize this? message first time
out.)

I tried zapping pram, rebuilding the desktop, checking
the preferences folder, making sure the extensions
were all okay...what I don't understand is why it
would mount the first time out and then not again.
The device is fine, it boots and plays the way it is
supposed to, I just can't make it mount on any of the
systems. Which is a bummer because I want to add my
own music and upgrade the firmware, but I can't if I
can't mount it.

The manual says that under mac os 10, it is sometimes
necessary to reformat the drive under a dos format.
Now I am not running os 10, but I am wondering if this
is what I should do. Says it will make the device
unable to work under windows, but that's little
concern to us.

Thanks for your help!

instructions for 3400 re-set Pram/Power Manager?

2004-01-11 Thread kaldav
Hello,
I would like to check the procedure to reset the PRAM settings and
the Power Manager on the 3400.
a. do I take out the battery before re-setting the PRAM? are these
instructions right?

To Re-set PRAM
1. Shut down powerbook, making sure Caps Lock is not on. Unplug AC adapter.
3. Press on Power Key and immediately hold down P - R - Option - Command keys.
3. Keep holding down the 4 keys until a start up chime sounds after
the initial startup chime.
4. If the computer shuts itself off, press the Reset button at the
back or turn it on with Power key.
5. After the computer has started up, select Shut Down from the Special menu.
6. Plug in the AC adapter. If the computer stays shut down, you have
successfully reset the PRAM and Power Manager. Restore any custom
setting for the desktop, memory, network, Appletalk, trackpad, etc.

To Re-set Power Manager
However, if the computer powers on when you plug in the AC adapter,
re-set the Power Manager by:
1. Remove battery. Disconnect AC adapter and unplug it from the wall outlet.
2. Press and hold Reset button for at least one minute.
3. Plug AC adapter to the wall outlet, then into the powerbook.
4. The powerbook may start up. You should be able to choose Shut Down
from the Special menu.

Anudder PB 1400 question

2004-01-11 Thread COCCORP
Hello listers,

I recently acquired a Newertech ethernet card that plugs into the expansion
port (near the RAM slots) inside the Powerbook 1400s.

Only thing is, I cannot seem to get it to work; does it require any software?

Thanks,

Craig W.

Re: Anudder PB 1400 question

2004-01-11 Thread Harry Brooks
Would suggest so. I acquired a PowerBook 1400cs and an Ossietech Jack
of Diamonds Trumpcard 28.8 card modem thanks to the kindness of a
lister.

Came with a floppy with software on it, and the website also had a
downloadable version which was identical.

You need the software as you have to get the modem card icon on the
desktop and set it up to recognise the upper slot.

Suggest www.newertech.com/. They do have a driver section on their
home page.

Well actually, this ethernet card is NOT a PC card; it is a card/module that

archos jukebox recorder v2 and mac os 8.6 yay!

2004-01-11 Thread H
Okay, I have learned a lot today... for the posterity
of the list, here goes:

Does it work? YES! Well, I knew it did, because I got
the device to load on my pb 3400 this morning, using a
macally usb card under usb 1.1, and I copied files to
it. Those files stared at me all day as I tried all
kinds of nonsense trying to get any of the macs at
home to mount the thing.

So finally after posting unanswered help messages to
every list that seemed relevant, I just started
digging in my reference books and sniffing around in
the apple support docs. The whole thing was about
having the device formatted with a fat32 format,
which pc exchange has been able to deal with since ver
2.1 under mac os 8.1. Well, according to the
documentation, the device only works when it is
formatted as a fat32, and so it presumably came
formatted correctly because I was able to mount it and
open it at least once, and I really couldn't imagine
that connecting it to my pb just once caused some
catastrophic file fragmentation. I know how to unmount
media, and I'm very careful about it.

So I pulled out the usb card, rebooted the pb, made
sure everything came up and that all the right
extensions were in place, then I rebooted it again. Re
mounted the usb card, then remounted the device.

One difference -- I did NOT connect the ac adapter.
Actually, I just plain forgot. It took a minute (it's
a 20G drive...) but it mounted right up as if nothing
had happened.

Now the manual says ALWAYS use the ac adapter when
connected via usb, and I know that when copying gigs
and gigs of data you can have heavy battery use, so
I'm going to keep that in mind. But on closer
inspection the manual also said the ajbrv2 would only
work under 9.22. :P

I was also able to get it to mount and trade files
with the iMac, but of course that's gossip for another
list. So anyways, if anyone is considering a fancy
dancy usb 2.0 based drive device, have heart and trust
good ol pc exchange with fat32 pc formatted media.

H

but I repeated this several times, and also got it to
work on the iMac.
