clock battery prob on 180c & where to find it?

2004-03-11 Thread alienbill
I have a PB180c which appears in fine shape except that the day &
time change constantly before my eyes. Setting Date & Time in Control
Panels seems to have no effect. Would this be a clock/cmos battery
problem?

I have another 180c for parts that I have completely disassembled
looking for something resembling a small battery with no luck. Can
anyone tell me where to find it? My floppy seems to be shot as well,
and I want to reinstall, but would rather not go in more than once so
I'd really like to find this solution soon. Thanks for any input.

bill

It is very fast. It feels great to have it running as fast as it was
when it was "the fastest notebook computer the world has ever seen"

OS9 running on the 3400c wasn't worth the slowness and memory hogging.

System 7 I've found to be able to do everything that I want when I'm away
from my OSX machine, including 802.11b networking, AIM, MS Office 98,
photoshop, email, and web browsing (via iCab). Each new release of iCab
is better and better.

I don't expect my 3400c to do anything amazing, so I don't feel like
using OS9 anymore. If I need to do anything that system 7 cant do I have
my G3 (huzza!!)

2004-03-11 Thread Tom and Lisa P
Is it possible to increase the video memory or whatever it
takes to obtain thousands or millions of colors at 640X480
(or better) on a 540c?
I have been working on and off on an attempt to increase the video
ram on a Duo 280c, which has the same amount of VRAM and video
controller. You apparently have to piggback extra RAM onto existing
chips and run new address lines to a 65225 video ctronller you solder
in place of the 65220.

I would suspect that 7.6.1 just doesn't do QuickDraw acceleration as well as
8.1 would.

Running 7.6, I bet your 3400 feels as fast as a G4. I could never do it,
though; I like the features in OS 9 too much.

3400c & Mac OS 7.6.1 - Slow Window Redraws

2004-03-11 Thread Dan Palka
So I got my 3400c running 7.6.1 now and it's super duper. Everything
is fast and its pretty stable.

Only one thing bugs me and that is that windows seem to redraw slowly
if I move a window from one location to another. Mac OS 8 didn't do
this - window redraws were immediate. But in 7.6.1 I can actually see
the window redrawing (although if you blink you'll miss it - but its
still pretty annoying). Is there a way to make this snappier like it
is in 8 and above?

Why would 7.6.1 redraw slower than 8? Especially since everything else
runs much faster.

Unfortunatly no. The res on all of the 540's is locked at 640x480.

Sort ofThe 540c can do thousands of colors at 640x400 - you get
black bands across the top and bottom of the screen. However, pictures
look great on it. It should be an option in the monitors control panel,
or mine can be set from the control strip.

How to with a 5300c?

2004-03-11 Thread Howard R. Katz
Well, since my repair skills are limited to a hammer (not a good thing to
do with electronics :) ) I got a PB 5300c off the swap list. Nice machine
and I can do wifi. I've got it pretty much set up the way I want, except:

it came with a Global Village PowerPort PlatinumPro card. I'd like to use
it with the ethernet connection for our home DSL, but when I have the card
in the slot, OS 8.1 (which can on the machine) tells me that there's no
drivers installed, and just gives me a generic modem icon.

I've tried the GV website but nothing there seems to be the drivers I
need. Anyone have any suggestions? Like I said, I'd like to use this
with the DSL.

Thanks!

Later.Howard

IE freeze ups?

2004-03-11 Thread Jim Lucas
Is it just me or do others have trouble with Internet Explore 5.1
freezing, especially when pulling down menus or using the scroll bar?

I have a PB 1400cs with a sonnet G3. I don't have much trouble when I
use Netscape Communicator 4.7.6. I don't even have to be using IE. I
have freeze-ups when it is in the background. Almost every time I
restart, there is a folder in the trash that says "Rescued items,"
and it has files from IE in it, usually the cache.)

I have the latest version of IE available before the switch-over to OS 10's.

Re: 520c adapter woes

2004-03-11 Thread Howard R. Katz
Well, it's definitely the Rev. C adapter. I just got a 5300c and the WiFi
card is recognized in it, so I guess I'll transfer my files from the 520c
to this machine, and just keep the older machine as a backup. (I guess
I'm moving up in the world--10 years late? :) )

The only thing I'm going to miss I think, is watching the data lights
flash on my farallon aaui adapter when I had the 520c hooked into our DSL.
The adapter that came with the 5300c just makes a connection and that's
it. :)
