Re: PowerBook 3400 Problems (can't locate the 68HC05)
I found two almost identical chips with no trace of markings re: the 68HC05. I assume Apple made sure these were not going to be confused for Motorola's brand. Apple probably bought the 68HC05 core from Motorola as a macro to its design automation system, and then had whomever make the composite chip for them. Nearly every microcontroller can be had that way (even PowerPC), and there is no requirement for the composite chip to be made by the originator of the microcontroller. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: PowerBook 3400 Problems (can't locate the 68HC05)
That's because it has ROM code in it that is protected by copyright, just like the system ROMs. The circle M protects the microcode (firmware, in most cases). The circle C protects the overall chip. If Apple bought the microcontroller macro, then there could be no circle C for the microcontroller, as the license includes unlimited reproduction rights, and, at that point, the microcontroller is not separable from the Apple logic, anyway. Nearly every microcontroller from a 4-bit to a 32-bit is available this way. The most popular imbedded micrcontroller may be the (Zilog) Z80, but the (Intel) 386 is also seen in imbedded applications. Even the (IBM) PowerPC is available in several imbedded variations. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... USB 2.0 *and* FireWire for Wallstreet (and, perhaps, for Kanga)
There is a new Combo USB 2.0+FireWire card on the market, which is a good option for the Wallstreet, as this is the last PowerBook which doesn't have USB. Two USB 2.0 ports and Two FireWire ports in a single card. PPA International is the manufacturer. Bar code 33250-00111. About $49.95 at Fry's Electronics. I have tested this card in my Wallstreet II under MacOS 9.1, in USB mode, and it works as advertised. I have not yet tested it in FireWire mode. The card is a sell-out at Fry's, but it is not stocked in Fry's Mac section, only in the generic (that is, PC) section. Incredibly, the product's package documentation says nothing about MacOS 9.x support, but it is there. You will see that only after loading the support CD-ROM. Only MacOS 10.1.5 and later needs the supplied driver CD-ROM. Earlier MacOSes are supported right out of the (retail) box. I will be modifying my Kanga to accept Cardbus cards, as a direct consequence of this success. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... PowerBook 3400 CD-ROM Issue
I have recently acquired a nice PB 3400c/180, OS 8.1, 3GB HD, 32MB RAM, floppy. I also won a PB 3400 cd-rom module on eBay for this machine. The cd-rom module appears to be OK, and is recognized by the 3400, but for some reason, CDs do not appear on the desktop. I have tried removing the module, zapping the PRAM and reinstalling the drive, all to no avail. I am wondering why CDs aren't being recognized. Any thoughts on this issue? Re: USB 2.0 *and* FireWire for Wallstreet (and, perhaps, for Kanga)
Please check the CD-Rom and any literature for info such as: chipset, voltage requirements, cables needed (if not included), use of external power supply if nec. or possible. I'm not too worried about transfer rates! Re: PowerBook 3400 CD-ROM Issue
Yes.. if CD-ROM discs dont show up then you probably dont have the CD-ROM extension in the system folder. Which may make sense for a computer that did not ship with a CD-ROM drive. You need to get it off a system install cd.
