Mot has some PDFs (well, they did a few years ago before the
semiconductor group started to tank) online with the pinouts of the
603e. You can use that to find the PLL pins and figure out the
resistor matrix if you haven't done it already. Excuse me if I'm
telling you something you already know. The one I'm thinking of is
entitled:
PowerPC
603e

RISC Microprocessor Family:
PID6-603e Hardware Specifications
Was it you who was going to try to upgrade the Chips & Logic video
controller to a T65225? Or was that JT? The T65220 is also on the
5x0 and 280c, right? That would be a pretty serious soldering job.
If you can do that, you might as well go right for the holy grail - a
faster 603e!
The 2300c has 512k of VRAM, right? I can't seem to find it...
Man, there are a lot of similarities between this thing and the 5300.
It really makes you see how little NEW product development was going
on at Apple in the 90s. Most of this stuff was evolutionary and
moving the components around on the logic board to make it smaller...
Peace,
Drew

Mad Dog, this is mostly aimed at you. Though anyone can answer!
Did you ever find the PLL resistors on the 2300 motherboard? I'm
not certain, but I suspect they aren't in a "bank" like we see on
most other Macs. It will take some investigating to confirm, but
I'll bet they are on the underside to the left of the PBX (big TI
chip under the 603e, I think that's the PBX). There are a few empty
resistor pads. It might be that because space is so precious on the
Duo mobo that the resistors are spread out. Look at R79 through
R109 - there's a semi-vertical column of resistors there... A
continuity tester will tell if they connect to the PLL pins on the
603e.

I'm finally getting around to my stereo headphones hack.
It looks like pins 71 and 72 on the PDS are SND R & L (sound out
right & left), respectively. Pin 150 is /SPKR SEL. Bringing that to
ground will tell the PowerBook to turn off the built-in speaker, I
think.

So. I've got a 4-pin stereo mini-jack I lifted off my 190
motherboard. The two smaller pins closer to the opening of the jack
are clearly the left & right audio pins, but I don't know which is
which. Does anyone know which segment of the 1/8" stereo mini-plug
is right and which is left?

The two pins towards the end of the jack probably connect to ground
(the tip) on the plug. I imagine that when you plug in a mini-plug,
those two pins are connected. One of them should probably connect to
pin 150 on the PDS. The other should probably go to ground either on
the PDS or elsewhere. Can anyone confirm that this is the behavior
of the jack Apple uses? Or that if /SPKR SEL is brought to ground
that it will disable the internal speaker?

I'm also going to post this to AppleFritter and the 68kmla, so I'm
sorry in advance for the cross post.

Exciting times...
Peace,
Drew

This should be fairly easy to fix, if you are handy with a soldering iron.
Probably, the power connector is just working its way loose from the
mainboard. This happened constantly on 5300s.

Probably a failed power management card internally; these can be replaced.

Yep.

Aggravating, but not a deal-breaker by itself.

Common problem with pre-G3 PowerBooks. No big deal.

All in all, in the condition it's in now, you probably wouldn't get more
than $125 for it. You'd probably do a lot better to break it down for parts,
actually.

Re: SCSI DVD ROM or PB1400c

2004-06-09 Thread Dan K
PBs 1400 can use an expansion bay DVD-ROM drive using a 12x CD-ROM EBM
shell and interface board. Laptop/slim DVD reader mechanisms are _very_
cheap. I tested a slim DVD-ROM reader I had laying about and it worked
fine reading DVD-ROMs.

my page on 1400 optical EBMs:

While PBs 1400 can access data DVDs, they cannot play video DVDs (AFAIK),
the video hardware just ain't near-enough powerful. Hmm, unless there's a
SW decoder that will work with a G3 upgrade under classic Mac OS. Which
I've never seen. But about which I'd gladly learn. :-)

Any PCI desktop Macs can use an ATAPI DVD drive through a PCI/ATA
adapter. In theory (haven't done it myself, near as I can recall) such a
video-DVD-capable display card as a Radeon Mac Edition or R7000 can do
the trick under both OSes 9 and X. Might require a bit of hackage to get
installed and running, I'm not exactly familiar with the details.

Is AppleTalk active? Its default is the same printer/modem port and it
usually doesn't let go gracefully. Also check for active printers.

There used to be a small app called portwatcher(?) that checked to see if
the printer/modem ports were in use. Versiontracker may still have it
listed. You could try using that.

There have been reports of incompatibilities with Sonnet cards and 8.[56].
In order, to try,

1. download the most current Extension from Sonnet.
2. upgrade to 9.1. (My 333 works fine in my 1400, but I leapfrogged
directly from 8.1 to 9.1.)

PB 1400/G3 - Problem #2

2004-06-09 Thread Bruce . Hossfield
Okay here's the second problem I'm having with my 1400:

When I tried to set up AOHell (v 5.0) it seemed unable to connect to the
(external) modem. It gave me three successive error messages. First:

"The requested serial port is in use by another application or extension
... etc. etc. ... Do you want to reset the port? YES NO"

Having seen this message plenty of times before on other macs I know that
you just press YES, it resets the port and everything goes fine. Not this
time. Second message:

"The only way we found to connect you is TCP/IP"

Of course you can cancel out of the auto-set-up and go back through
"expert set-up" to select a modem (US Robotics 56k). However, when I did
that and tried to connect, I got message #3:

"Connection warning: Unable to communicate with the modem. Please check
that the modem is securely connected, turn it off and on, etc. etc. ..."

To make sure I wasn't having hardware or software problems other than the
powerbook itself, I did the following: tried another modem (to check if my
modem was crapped out); and copied my desktop AOL folder and AOL
Preferences folder onto over to the powerbook. I've always found that once
you have AOL installed, you can switch out those folders so as to copy all
your modem settings, access numbers, favorites etc. onto your new
computer. Well, I tried all that and nothing worked. Same messages.

Lastly, I also did a clean install of OS 8.5 (after trying all of the
above things). After the clean install, I tried using the internet set-up
assistant to find the modem, again with no success. Tried AOL set-up after
the clean install - nothing.

So now I feel like I have exhausted every trick I know and I need some
help with this. Maybe the modem port is just plain broken somehow? Or
maybe some previous owner had this PB set-up with a TCP/IP connection and
now it won't see the modem ... ??

Anyway, any ideas?

PB 1400/G3 - Problem #1

2004-06-09 Thread Bruce . Hossfield
I recently got hold of a 1400/133 with a Sonnet Crescendo 333 mhz G3 card
in it, running OS 8.5. In general it seems to be running fine, but I am
having two problems. This post covers Problem #1, namely, that altough
the G3 card seems to be working fine, I can't seem to put the Sonnet
Upgrade extension in the system folder - whenever I do, it causes the
powerbook to freeze during start-up just before the icon parade, i.e.
right when the Sonnet extension is trying to install.

What I've read about this is that without the Sonnet extension the card
still functions but you don't get the L2 cache, which of course is a
problem. I also read that you are supposed to install the extension first,
then install the Crescendo card. If this has something to do with it it's
kind of a problem since I only have the G3 cpu for this 'book, not the
original 133 mhz cpu.

If someone can tell me how to get the extension to work right I'd be most
appreciative.
