3400 battery question

2004-07-08 Thread Rod Lavington

Hi All!

I have recently acquired a 3400 Powerbook, that has about 1 hour charge in
the battery. What I wanted to know is this:

1) Does the battery from a 190/5300 fit the 3400?

2) Can I get the 190 battery recelled with Li-ON cells instead of what is
in there?

Seeya

Rod!

Re: DB 15 connector on left hinge of PB 170?

2004-07-08 Thread Bigbikerbo
This is a very unique device made for a short time by Envisio, a company
which is now defunct.. I owned one for my 170.. It was a great idea which never
really sold well

It is a board with RAM AND video output, and requires software, which I lost
over 10yrs ago..

It IS a video output jack, as you guessed, but you'll have to acquire the
software to allow it to work.

Best of luck in finding it..

Well, it's definitely non-standard. There's no standard means to add
expansion hardware internally. My guess would still be video since
that is available, just with a different connector normally. It's
going to need a monitor that works with Sync-on-Green. This would
mean the Apple Hi-Res 13" color monitor or one of the 12" mono
monitors. Multi-sync monitors would likely not work.

Minor point, it's a DA-15.

I just picked up a free Powerbook 1400cs and I have little idea what
I'm
doing. I tried installing SoundApp to listen to music but I can't get
it to
work. I was able to expand the file and I end up with a .sit file.
However, now I just don't know what to do. Can anyone help me out?

SoundApp is good, you might also try Cabrio. I've used that on some
5300's, also on my PPC 540c.

Re: PowerBook with Sonnets vs Kanga

2004-07-08 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
You are right, but my point is: we are 10-20% of Mac users, my wife
belongs to the other 80-90%...

They don't care about video or CPU tasks: they just want to go to the
bottom of the doc (okay there are other ways... to accomplish this
task...).

So my point was that for some users and real word use, MHz and video
chips aren't enough.

Moreover, since on the G5 I cannot install neither System 6, nor Word
4 I have to compare the most balanced configuration for each system.

This sort of test pretty largely tests the video hardware only; it
has very little to do with the CPU.

The G5 was 4x faster than the Wallstreet, while the Wallstreet was
only 1.6X as fast as the Kanga. So your second conclusion is wrong
as well.

Moreover comparing Word 2001 on OS9 to Word X on OS X is much like
comparing apples to goldfish. Both are tasty snacks, but are hardly
equivalent.

Have you tried booting without extensions?

Have you tried both the upper and lower slots?

I remember this happening once with my 1400cs, BUT I CAN'T REMEMBER HOW I
FIXED IT! Seems to me I booted with extensions off and the card and holder
stayed in, then I restarted (this time allowing extensions to load) and all
has been fine since...

The date and time don't change, so I was hoping the pram battery is OK.
Otherwise, I might as well consider completely dismantling this thing to
change the battery. It seems weird that Apple made 1400s so easy to work on,
but put this battery in such an inaccessible place.

You don't say what you're using for wireless. Try a wired connection first to make

I *think* it was supplied from OS 8.x onwards, maybe not 8.0 or 8.1, can't exactly
remember. Early Stuffit archives will unarchive with 5.x or later, HOWEVER Acrhives
made with Stuffit 5.x or later will NOT unarchive in 4.x or earlier. 5.5 runs on all
68ks running OS 7.0 or later so there isn't a great problem with that.

I'm using 8.0 but I'm willing to upgrade. I just don't know how.
Depending on amount of RAM the machine has, you may want to fall back
to OS 7.6.1, otherwise it is usually suggested to upgrade from OS 8
to OS 8.1 for stability and enhancements... free from Apple :

http://www.info.apple.com/support/oldersoftwarelist.html
Scroll about 2/3 of the way down ... If you're dialup, Mac OS 8.1
update.smi.bin is about 16 MB, if you have time, or do the 13 parts
(disk images) as time permits ...
also get OS 8.1 update/Disk Tools PPC .img.bin (to make a startup floppy),

Scroll almost to the bottom > Utilities > Disk Copy 6.3.3 .smi.bin
Read the Info.txt (text) for all, printout as needed.
I don't need anything too fancy. Just something to play some audio
files while I'm typing.
