Keyboard issue?
Maybe I'm not familiar with how sprockets are set up in OSX (10.2.8) but I can't get any OSX native games to work with the keyboard. For example, when I go to configuration (Burnin' Rubber) inside the game to set up the controls, when I try to do anything it just sits there. My keyboard works perfect in the OS so I know the keyboard is fine. Did I miss something? Oh this is on a Powerbook G4 (Ti 400mhz). Thanks for any help! Jake __ Do you Yahoo!? Re: Processor Upgrades for PowerBook 1400
All depends on what your trying to get out of the book, I have the 400 upgrade and it made a huge difference, just don't get in a hurry to buy the upgrade. I have seen them for $35 to $50 on Low End Swap. Ebay well just do not get in a bidding war. I does make a huge difference. These books are still good for email, writing and light web use. I love the keyboard, solid and sturdy sums it the whole design. The max ram however is 64 megs, that's the real short fall. You have to stack the ram unless you lucky to find 48 meg single, made by Newer Tech. If you do not want to upgrade give it to school or a kid who can use it, dig up a printer. You would be surprised at how many kids do not have a computer and even the 1400 once the most powerful computer, faster then a desktop has use today. That's what makes Mac a Mac, my wife used Turbo Tax last year to check our accountants figures and found gold, do that on a wintel this old on NEW software. Of course time marches on and she will need to use one of my pismos or Apple blow me away with a cheap iBook. If the machine fits your needs then do it, I run 8.6 is very stable. Re: Best OS for Wallstreet 233
What would be the highest OS I could run on this? would 9.2 run ok? Yes, it would. OS 9 runs well on a 3400/180, so a Wallstreet wouldn't have much problem. OS 8.6 would be the fastest, if you don't need the added features of OS 9. You can run up to 10.2.8 on that machine, but don't even think about it if you have the cacheless 233 MHz version. It would be sluggish even on the Series 2 Wallstreet 233. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Processor Upgrades for PowerBook 1400
I have a 1400c which now sits because it was replaced with the Ti G4. The 1400c is a nice laptop but these days it's a bit slow. When the 1400c was my primary computer I used it until the speed (133mhz) started slowing me down. So I went and bought a Sonnet 400mhz G3 upgrade (back when it was fresh on the market) at the cost of about $400+tax. The 1400c upgrade made a world of a difference, almost making it feel like a new machine. These are some of the tests I did. CPU: Stock Powerbook 1400c/133 - 150 Sonnet 1400c 400/G3 - 995 CPU: Stock Powerbook 1400c/133 - 250 Sonnet 1400c 400/G3 - 938 As you can see, it was many times faster than stock. And because of the chip Sonnet uses, I gained battery life. All in all it was a good buy. That was until problems started popping up. Even though the upgrade was great, all in all I would never buy from Sonnet again (personally I hate them)! For some reason I wasn't able to use any OS after 8.5 (that means no 8.6+). And even 8.5 was unstable, it would crash on occasion. Using 8.6 or higher would only allow me to use the computer for a few minutes before it locked up. When I called the company they pretty much told me to shove it and that it was an Apple software problem and not there's. Ok, so here are the important things (I used that 1400c for a few years). First is the speed, I know the stock processor is dog slow and it's pretty much useless these days. Sure it would make a good computer to write on but photo/video/internet can be a bare. If you upgrade it with a G3 you can do video and photo now (though it can be buggy) and the internet now is livable but you are still limited to using old software and older OS's. The main reason is the 64meg ram limit (which was the main reason I stopped using it). You can't do anything with 64meg ram and using VM makes the problem worse because of an extreme reduction in performance. The video is very poor. Your stuck with 800x600 in thousands of colors (a real burden) and the frame rate with anything is SLOW! If you ask me, use it for simple stuff or as Geoffrey said, give it to some kid. Otherwise I'd save the money to buy something a bit snappier. Something like a Lombard or Pismo at the minimum. These days there fairly cheap and a bargain compared to upgrading the 1400c with a new processor, maxing the ram, larger hard drive (1-2gb fills very fast) and a ethernet (broadband) and/or 56k (dial up) PC card(s) to connect to the internet. Also I'd like to note that the 1400c has some serious issues with PCMCIA cards and them working. It's much better to get a computer that has them built in already. But again that's just me. Re: Best OS for Wallstreet 233
Well, the simplist way to put it is I was comfortable with the old OS. See, I've been using the Mac OS since 7.1p3 (i've used the Apple DOS back in middle school on the IIe, but not regularly). Anyway, every OS after the 7.1 to OS9 were pretty much the same (other than the little changes from generation to generation). As with any of us, new things can be a little disconcerting. Also I didn't like how Apple was trying to get everyone to change to the new OS (forcing people to get new things seems to be Apple's new policy these days). Anyway, when I first got 10.2 (Jaguar) I sat on it for about a week. Then one day I decided to take the plunge, backed up all my important info and installed OSX. The first thing that I wasn't happy about was the install time. Even OS9 installs in a flash. But this was more ignorance because I assumed it would be around the same install size. Once it was installed I didn't like that Apple was asking for so much personal information (maybe that's not a concern for everyone else anymore but it still bothers me), and at the time I thought I had to fill out the info. After some deliberation I finally gave in and supplied them the needed info. After it was installed I was a bit puzzled how everything worked. I couldn't make new folders, couldn't turn off VM, couldn't trim extensions and didn't have an Apple Menu folder which I could modify. It made me feel that they were trying to take all the control of the OS away from the users. I'm also a neat freak and like my hard drive to be meticulously organized and the way OSX was set up look cluttered and I had no clue how to organized it. And when I finally did I got kernel panics(wow those are freaky). Well, it's now much later and I have a better feel for the OS. I can make folders (Apple-Shift-N, why I don't know) You really don't notice the VM running at all like it did in the older OS's, especially if you have a good amount of ram. You don't get to mess with extensions but for that you don't get the extension conflicts your used to seeing in the older OS. Still no apple menu but the dock can do some pretty cool things (you gain some and loose some). Organizing everything can be done but it's just done different, just have to learn to do it. And lets not forget the important thing. It NEVER crashes (at least like your used to in the older OS). If a program crashes, the program goes down and not the whole computer. There's no instability or loss of ram when it happens either. You can run multiple applications at once like there the primary application without any problems (try to start 10 big applications at once in OS9). And that's just the tip of the iceberg. The things you need to consider is this. OSX takes up much more hard drive space than the older OS's. You need more ram than before (though OSX can be run on 96megs of ram, but the more you have the faster your performance unlike the older OS). What processor you use isn't to big of a deal (OSX will run on a 604e, maybe a 601?) but the more you have the better! And a G4 really makes a big difference. But this is just my opinion. Now that I've used OSX, I wouldn't ever use OS9 (I really never even use classic). If your able to get past the first 2 weeks, you won't go back. At least I didn't. OS X is a ram-hungry beast, 256 megs should be considered minimum ante. A default install of OS X takes a lot of space upwards of 5-6 gigs, but there's 2-3 gigs of extraneous localization files in there. Do a custom install, dont' install the extra languages, and you'll have the choice to not install Russian, Turkish, Japanese, Korean and Finnish .;-) You'll also be able to tell it that 'No I don't want 3,3956 different printers installed'. With paring of unnecessary stuff, OS X can be installed in 3 gigs. That said, when you can walk into a store and buy a 160 gig hard drive for $60 after rebates, disk space is somewhat less of an issue. I've seen 30 gig drives go for $15 on the LEM swap list. What processor you use isn't to big of a deal (OSX will run on a 604e, maybe a 601?) but the more you have the better! And a G4 really makes a big difference. OS X 10.1.5 can be hacked to run on 604 processors using XPostFacto, 10.2 runs on G3's just fine, but the OS does use the G4's features if it's present. Re: Processor Upgrades for PowerBook 1400
problems started popping up. 9.1 works just fine. I use it on my 1400 with a Sonnet G3/333. Myself, I'm looking at a 466, since I use this laptop a lot, and I don't really feel like getting another. -- -- personal: http://www.armory.com/~spectre/ -- Cameron Kaiser, Floodgap Systems Ltd * So. Buying HDs on the LEM Swap List (was Re: Best OS for Wallstreet 233
Bruce Johnson writes, That said, when you can walk into a store and buy a 160 gig hard drive for $60 after rebates, disk space is somewhat less of an issue. I've seen 30 gig drives go for $15 on the LEM swap list. Ohh, this sounds so good because a 30 gig drive is precisely what I need right now, and $15 is right in my budget too. But I'd like to ask you, and any other listers here, about your experiences on buying HDs from the swap list. As in, have you ever bought any and it turned out to be a bad drive? I ask because -- sorry this isn't about my Powerbook, but your mention of the swap list caught my attention -- I bought a G3/233 from the swap list -- really good price ($35 + shipping), but unfortunately ended up with two bad HDs (which is why I want to buy a new one, and I'd like a bigger one than the 4 MB and 2 MB those were). That's my only experience buying from the swap list, and it rather makes me hesitate to buy anything else there. So do you think I just ran into an exception, or do you and others who shop on the swap list regularly get both good HDs and/or other equipment at good prices from there as a rule? Re: Best OS for Wallstreet 233(slightly reverting back to my problem)
If you have OS 9.2.2 running on your 3400, mind telling me how you accomplished it? Mine will not shut down after running any app. Thanks, Dennis On 17-Nov-04, at 3:29 PM, KG wrote: What would be the highest OS I could run on this? would 9.2 run ok? Yes, it would. OS 9 runs well on a 3400/180, so a Wallstreet wouldn't have much problem. OS 8.6 would be the fastest, if you don't need the added features of OS 9. You can run up to 10.2.8 on that machine, but don't even think about it if you have the cacheless 233 MHz version. It would be sluggish even on the Series 2 Wallstreet 233. -- -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: WLAN with a Powerbook 540 ?
I was using a rev B PCMCIA cage; perhaps the Rev C, needed for the PPC versions, make the difference. The Rev. B is simply a Rev. A with a few ... very few ... cuts and adds. Also a few extra caps for de-glitching the signals. Same PCB. Same LSI chip. The Rev. C is a complete re-design. All new PCB. All new LSI chip, too. The Rev. B should be viewed as a more trouble-free Rev. A. Also, 69K only, as is the Rev. A. The Rev. C is 68K and PPC compatible. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Best OS for Wallstreet 233(slightly reverting back to my problem)
Hello Dan, Go to www.powerbook3400c.com i looked at your page since i have a Hooper too. Much detail is given there. This is the NEW location of my famous Hooper Hotrodding pages. Let me tell you something about plannedfutureupgrades.html If you want to install Linux on the Hooper i would not use BlueLabel. Try a direct installation on a second partition. On my Hooper there is a Debian Sarge with Kernel 2.4.25 running. Very stable. Everything is supportet, even 802.11b. With BootX you can at boottime select which OS you want to load. Anotherthing is: I want to give DVD a try too. I bought a slimline from a bigger Powerbook and will try to build it in. -- +---+ | () Gruesse/regards [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.mague.org | | /\ Manfred GuentnerICQ: 91842230 | +---+ -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: 5300 question
Gerald writes, 5300 64mb ram OS 7.5.5. I can connect to the internet fine with my ISP. However when I fire up WannaBe or Icab I get this site is not available messages. Is there something that I'm missing? I've used FreePPP and OT/PPP to which I get the same reply. Do I need to set something different in TCP/IP? Any help appreciated. I''ve got a PB 190, also OS 7.5.5 -- and a lot less RAM than you've got. No problems going online. Never heard of WannaBe but I do have iCAB on my PB and I can get on the web with that. So far as I'm aware, this site is not available means that something is going on at the website itself, not with your computer, not with how you connect to your ISP (I use a version of FreePPP my ISP had sent me) and not with your browser. ~Yersinia. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
