The cdroms from 190, 3400, 3500 should fit.

But you can install another os without a cdrom drive. Make a
boot-floppy with network access and install over the net.

Of course you will need a network and a second machine for this.

I installed my 540c and my LC this way.

Hello,
i would tend to say its the videocable or the LCD itself.
Probably the videomemory.. but i dont think so.
If the voltage would be too low, i guess the 520c would
not boot at all.

Can you use a window to "clean away" the blocks ?

FYI to Roger,
I just picked up a battery on Ebay that supposedly works with a 3400c, which
is what I bought it for although it's not the same model number as the
original. Cheap, 17 bucks including shipping. Let me know if you want the
url, if you can't find it there. Some company in Utah. Might help if yours
is fried.

Laptop compatibility with compucable idock II

2004-12-02 Thread seahurst
I found no archive reference to this topic and think it might be fun to discuss.

I was recently given a working CompuCable iDock2.
No power brick was included but research discovered a PB180 brick works
perfectly.

Click below for idock info:
http://www.welovemacs.com/idock2.html

Here are a few lines of product info:
 - The iDock II includes 4 USB ports, two Apple Geo serial ports, one ADB port,
and an internal
floppy drive, all in one package.
 - You can connect ADB-equipped devices such as keyboards, mice, trackballs,
and joysticks.
 - Transferring and backing up iMac files onto floppies is now possible
 - Compatible with palm pilots and other serial devices
 - Copy and transfer data using traditional floppy drive
 - Connect traditional ADB devices to your iMac
 - Connect traditional serial/Geo devices to your iMac
 - Connect additional USB peripherals to your iMac
 - Compatible with Mac OS 8.6 & 9 Does Not support OS X or AppleTalk/LocalTalk
devices

There's no iMac in my present life or anticipated future.
But I've got laptops!

Has anyone ever tried (with success would be nice) to use a laptop with the
iDock2?
It's doubtful to me that this is an original thought but I've yet to find
discussion on the topic.
BTW: iMac's connect to the dock via a USB cable.

I don't think ADB laptops would work but wonder about Wallstreet on up. ADB
laptops with USB cards
might qualify.
I plan to research USB Overdrive for possible use and will post findings.

My 3400, Wallstreet, Lombard and Pismo all seem to balance fine on the dock.
The elevated height
isn't a problem and the dock swivel feature is cool. The floppy drive would be
useful too and having
all those extra ports from the dock appeals to me.

But I'm an admitted chicken when it comes to connecting the dock with one of my
laptops.

Got thoughts?

Chuck

Just a wild assed guess, but IBM think pads go directly into sleep when they
decide the battery is too low, regardless of what the battery actually
shows.

PB520c rebuild

2004-12-02 Thread Bruce
Hello, I've inherited a PB520c. It came in many parts, not one of which was
a power supply. I've reattached the screen to the base by rebuilding the
hinge posts with urethane expoxy. I boosted the battery to approx. 12V and
gerry rigged 12Vs on the supply lines. It boots but, the top half of the
screen shows stripped rectangular blocks not the uniform color of the bottom
half. Could this be due to insufficient voltage or is there something else I
am missing?

Thank you,
Bruce

Re: PB 3400c

2004-12-02 Thread Phil Cook
Oh sorry. My mistake. There is also a term called easter eggs that
expresses sometimes a few key combinations to show you something out
of the ordinary. See example below:

Egg Name: Application Switcher Credits
Works On: Mac OS 9
Manufacturer: Apple

How it Works:
1. Click and drag down Application Switcher box (upper-right pull-down
menu) to 'undock' App Switcher.
2. Run enough programs (5-7) and do not hide their names to make a box
big enough.
3. Make a text clipping in Simple Text or elsewhere with the following
three words: Secret About Box
4. Select it and drag to desktop to make a clipping.
5. Now drag the clipping file into the App Switcher box.

Special Notes:
Tested on MacOS 9.2.2. Not regression-tested, but I suppose it works
in MacOS 9.x.

Is there a 3400c easter egg?

Many thanks to all who are helping.

All the machines at present have 56K internal or external modems and we can
cable together all except the powerbooks - so a wide
choice. We can upgrade the IMac to OSX - no problem here as we now have all
the Mac, O,S.s from 7 to X available, (pity we cannot
convince the Crescendo Upgraded 7600 its a proper full G3 as we could then
put 9.1 onto it as well) and will try to get the Wireless adapter Bruce
mentions - hope they ship to the UK! as
things like this are gold dust over here, as is the potential
Farallon/Proxim PCI adaptor card for the 7600, so if anyone sees one we are
in the market - PLEASE .
We also have "on the side" being unused a spare
complete Cisco aeronet system (the old 802.11b spec) which was originally
going into a couple of PC's until I found out that my computer skills just
aint that good
Will keep hunting and keep you all posted. If the very worst occurs the
market
will be full of unwanted gadgets!

the screen would be kept vertical but the keyboard base would be

as close to vertical as the hinges will allow.
Is this good for the 'book? Does it matter?
Repeated flexing is what wears out hinges. Since you're going to be at
the limit of the hinge movement, I'd make sure it was supported when
you type on it, since none of those truly folds out completely flat.

Somewhere I heard once that hard drives don't spin as well, or have
more wear, when not horizontal.
In days of old, when men were bold and disk drives weighed twenty
pounds, it was alleged that a drive must always be run in the
orientation it was formatted in. It doesn't matter now, especially with
a drive as light as a laptops.

I suspect it was largely urban legend even then.

Is everything ok with the books ? Backlight, Screen, keyboard
and battery ? On my 3400c the backlightbulb was broken and it
rebootet as soon as i removed the battery...

Have you reset the powermanager ? have you exchanged the
board with the powermanagement (the borad with the pins for the
battery) ?

What happens if you remove the battery and run them with
cable only ?
