2300c Question

2005-03-13 Thread Mark Templeton
I am trying to reconstruct a perfect duo system around a 2300c. I want
to install System 9.1 but do not have a clue how to do a fresh install
since the OS is on CD. Could someone offer a recommendation?

I am a newbie to this list so I apologize if this is not an appropriate
question.

Thank you,
Mark

You can install OS 9.1 either with an external SCSI CD drive, or
through another Mac with the SCSI Disk Mode, which is explained here:

Re: 2300c Question

2005-03-13 Thread Daniel Palka
Oh my goodness I highly highly highly dis-recommend installing OS 9.1
on a Duo 2300c. At most install 8.6. I would probably stick to 8.1.
OS 9 offers little feature benefits to anybody running a Duo to make up
for the massive extreme horrendous slow down, hogging of hard drive
space, and 24mb of RAM (with Virtual Memory turned on - even more
slowness!) that it takes up. And don't even think about using the
modem with OS 9 - the internal modem on Duos slows the machine down by
some ridiculous number like 50%. That's barely acceptable with System
7, much less OS 9.

You have to get yourself out of the newer is always better syndrome -
for it is very untrue. Especially on a Duo 2300. OS 9.1 yikes!

Just a word of warning. Either way you have to get an external
CD-ROM, and for that you need either a dock or the crazy Duo - SCSI
microdock. Or a minidock.

OS 7.0.1 and PB 145- need help w/disk image

2005-03-13 Thread Ge'
Dear Bill,
I'm not quite sure what is happening, but I'll try mentioning some points:
I have tried simply dbl clicking on the first file- that creates a
large disk image on my desktop, but no way will it fit onto a floppy.
It seems you did everything right up to here, because Disk Copy has
mounted the image and it appears on your desktop as a real disk.

Did you make any changes to these mounted disks??? It is possible to add
or delete files, just like with normal disks, that's why I'm asking...
If in doubt, download the image file(s) again.

Now you need a 1.4 MB floppy for each of the four disk image files. The
floppies should have two holes, one for write-protecting and one to tell
the Mac it's a high-density floppy.
It's best to format the floppies first, so you know they're good.

Then comes the trick:
After a disk image has been mounted (with Disk Copy), insert a floppy,
and drag the icon of the mounted disk (not the image file!) onto the
floppy's icon. That starts the disk-copying process.

Then you can drag both disks to the trash, the mounted image and the
real floppy, and repeat the thing for the other image files.

Good luck and let me know if it works out!
Ge'

Sounds like great advice. Where do I can an external CDROM and cable? I
have a duo dock II and a mini dock already.
Thanks,
Mark

Re: 2300c Question

Mark,
I agree entirely with what Dan Palka wrote. I run 8.6 on my 2300c
(44 MB real RAM), and it works pretty well. I'll spare you from any
further diatribe on the subject.

You can install any OS up to (and including) 9.0.4 via network - you
don't have to hook up a CD-ROM to your Duo. However, this does
require the use of a 2nd Mac with a CD-ROM drive, and it's really
helpful if you have an ethernet network (though you can do this with
serial networking - LocalTalk - equipment as well).

This discussion assumes you _haven't_ got ethernet (which, since
you've got a DuoDock and MiniDock, you seem to have).

- Find yourself a serial/LocalTalk/printer cable. Hook it up to the
printer/modem port of the PowerBook and the printer port of the
desktop Mac.
- Boot up both Macs.
- Make sure both Macs are set to never go to sleep.
- On both Macs, open the AppleTalk control panel and set Connect
via: to the appropriate port (printer/modem for the PowerBooks,
printer for the desktop).
- On the desktop, open the File Sharing control panel (or the Sharing
Setup control panel on older OSs). If you haven't yet filled out the
Onwer Name, password, and computer name, do so now. Turn File
Sharing on.
- Once File Sharing has started up, close the control panel. Insert
the Mac OS CD into the CD-ROM drive.
- If you have Mac OS 8 or later on the desktop, Get Info on the Mac
OS CD (for 7.5.x or 7.6.x, select the disc, then choose Sharing
from the File Menu). Click the checkbox to share the disc, then set
whichever privileges you want. (Owners can always access all disks,
regardless of whether they are being shared or not. So this step
isn't really necessary).
- On the PowerBook, open the Chooser and click on AppleShare. Double
click the name of the desktop Mac.
- Enter the appropriate owner's name and password.
- Select the Mac OS CD and click OK
- When the shared CD mounts on the PowerBook, open it and install Mac
OS as normal.

Be prepared to wait a _very_ long time for this to work. I installed
OS 8.5 then the 8.6 update to my 5300cs using this method at one
point (actually, I used IRTalk which is cooler than LocalTalk but
just as slow). It took hours to work, but work it did. You might
want to let this run overnight while you sleep...

Peace,
Drew

Re: 2300c Question

2005-03-13 Thread Dan K
Not necessarily slow, OS 9.1 can be quite satisfactorily speedy on a
2300C, caveated (!) :-) by two things:

1) you must have _real_ 56MB ram (2300's maximum)

and!

B) you gotta replace the puke-slow original HD with a modern, fast drive
(say 8 or 10 GBs at least.)

With those two conditions met you _will_ be satisfied with OS 9.1. If you
can't do either, then go with the other recommendations.

In most situations, I would say everybody has their own opinion! But
in this case I must say, the above is an entirely false statement.
Unless you sit around running SimpleText all day, or judge speedy-ness
by opening and closing Finder windows and seeing how fast the Control

anything close to speedy on a PowerBook Duo. In fact, even when
