From what I heard there is only one 3COM card that has a Mac driver
so I think you are SOL.

Yes, you need a Mac Driver for any Ethernet interface. Apple
Interfaces all have drivers included in the OS. A few network cards
work with Apple drivers, principally LC PDS cards. I doubt there are
any third party PC Card interfaces that work with Apple drivers.

Same thing for a PCMCIA card for wireless internet
access, I need to find a brand/model with a Mac
driver, correct?
Orinoco PC Card (not CardBUS) Gold or Silver work with Airport
software. You do have to use TomeViewer to install the software.
The installer won't install it on a 3400c.

USB card, I also need that the card comes with Mac
drivers (or can download) Is this correct?
Most USB PC Cards do work with the Apple drivers. Note that OS 9.X
won't install the drivers unless it sees the card there during
installation. You can install the driver later. Or use the stand
alone installer for 8.6 or 9.x

One additional item, my indicator for the "Battery
Life Remaining" isn't showing up. Is that an
extension? What is the name of it?
I believe it's an option in the Energy Saver control panel. There is
also a display in the Control Strip.

The publisher of B's Recorder is still in business, have you contacted
them directly?

If you get it, please be sure to let us know how it goes. A CD-R in a
1400 EBM is one of those things I never got working, lacking the
neccessary software.

190cs workaround

2005-04-19 Thread Doc Holliday
Possible work around for the video is to swap the video card in the 190cs
with the video card from a 5300 and you would have a way to attach it to a
external monitor..

According to Low End Mac:

Because the 190 and 5300 share the same case any many other enclosures, it
is possible to upgrade your 190 with 5300 components by swapping in the
video card (which adds support for an external monitor) and/or an active
matrix screen.

http://www.lowendmac.com/pb/190cs.shtml

There are two 520c's on eBay, right now - 5186517203 and 5187531804. One is
a "Buy It Now" for $29.99 and the other is at the same price on
auction.Probably replace the whole thing with one of those a whole lot
easier than finding and buying the video. The one draw back to the 500
series is the A/AUI Ethernet connector. You have to have a A/AUI "dongle" to
attach to the A/AUI and then plug in the RJ45 from your Ethernet to that.

I bought the first 520c that came to my dealer when they were introduced. It
was a sweat machines. Later, I bought a 540c, which my nephew is still
using.

Let me know how it works out.

The screen is now washed out -- I can just barely see enough on the screen to
see the motherboard is working, but I can't really read it, or manipulate it.

upgrade (it's got only the original 8MB on it). Is there a video circuit on the
motherboard that would make it worthwhile to spring for the board, or is the
video circuit separate? Or is there a simpler fix for the video problem?

Re: 190cs troubles

2005-04-19 Thread Howard R. Katz
Of course there's the other tried-and-true method for fixing anything:
try tapping on the case a bit--it may be a slightly loose connector. I
have the same problem with a 520c, and I've not been able to figure out
where the connection problem is taking the cover apart. Tapping on the
back of the case when it goes bright and washed out brings it back to
readability. (when in doubt, get a bigger hammer! :) )

It may be as simple as the button doesn't work anymore. Try using
the control panel, I think it can control the brightness too.
But I can't see the control panel. Are there keyboard accelerators?
Where might I find them? I have downloaded the user manual, and
can't find any help there.

You could try a PRAM zap. If that doesn't do it, try disconnecting
AC power, the main battery and PRAM battery.
