Re: Orinoco Driver Loop

2005-05-27 Thread Manfred

Hello,

i had the same problem. A manually installation solved all problems.

Well, Listers, I should have researched the archives for my answer! I
know that Ken Vann's macwireless site
http://home.earthlink.net/~macwireless has been mentioned often here.
Turns out that my loop problem is addressed in his FAQ's. The first
suggestion there is to install the files manually. I will try that and
 report.

(BTW, Orinoco did respond and referred me directly to the macwireless
 site.)

...anybody got a good solution for the upside down logo on my Pismo?
Yesterday,

I just did a swap a couple weeks ago and I never did any work on a PB
before and it's pretty easy to do. And the C screen is so much
better than the CS is. I looked on Ebay for a while with out any
luck except for the $40.00 + shipping auctions that are always on
Ebay. I ended up getting a 1400c with some problems but a good screen
for less than the screen prices I could find so I did a swap.

I have several 1400's, had two sitting side by side and the difference
of the 1400c and the 1400cs is like night and day.

The problem with constructing a 'Book (or any 'puter really) from bits is
that without a complete correctly working unit in which to test parts
it'll be very frustrating not being able to figure which part(s) is

Though it runs counter to the OP's original proposal, it's much better to

Subject: Orinoco Driver Loop
From: William Damkoehler [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi, Listers.

Just put an Orinoco Classic Gold wireless PC card into my Powerbook
1400. I attempted to install a driver I downloaded from the Orinoco
site (version 7.2) which is designed to work with OS 8.6 which I'm
using on the 'Book. (This 'Book has been upgraded to a 233MHz G3, has
the small HD and has 64MB of built-in memory.)

When I attempt to run the installation I enter an eternal loop:
Clicking Install leads to the License Agreement - clicking Agree
leads to Install - clicking Install leads to the License
Agreement - clicking Agree leads to Install - clicking Install
leads to the License Agreement - clicking Agree leads to Install
- clicking Install leads to...well, you get the picture.

I've e-mailed Orinoco Support about this but have had no response
except to say that I will get a response!

I did track down an earlier version of the driver and am using it but
would like the features of v7.2. Anybody else ever confront this
problem?

Thanks for all past, present and future expertise!

-Bill

I have documented a problems similar to this on my wireless FAQ site. See
question 5. Try the solutions listed. Download same version of the
installer from a different location. Additional locations listed on my web
site.

This problem is only with the early PowerBooks which use card and socket
services v2. No you can not upgrade that, its in the ROM.

Uh. . . . this will require a razor saw from the hobby shop or a
Dremel tool with saw blade . Patience, a steady hand and a
willingness to work with plastic.
Draw a perfect square around the logo. Cut it out. Flip it 180
degrees and use an MEK based or other appropriate solvent glue to
weld it back together.
Then fine sandpaper to finish. Some case modders use bead blasting
to match pebble grain finishes.

Too much work?
Then make up some good lines to *crew with peoples heads.

Re: PB 1400 Screen-Swap

2005-05-27 Thread Krow Magnum
Just for clarification. I swapped the whole screen assembly on the
1400, not just the LCD which cannot be swapped without the correct
active-matrix cable from what I understand. It's a lot easier to swap
the whole assembly anyway. It helps to take the CPU out first so the
monitor can be plugged into the 2 connectors on the board of the 1400
which can be a little tight to get to of you have big clumsy fingers
like mine.

Never did a swap on a 520 with a 520c screen so I can't say if it will
work. The 520 to 520c conversion probably has more to swap since it's
a black and white video to color video.

Re: Pismo...upside down logo

2005-05-27 Thread Yersinia
Howard writes,

Tell them that the logo is right side up--it's all those years of using
a
Windows-based machine has just got them turned in the wrong direction.
:)

Of all the replies so far, I like this one the best, actually. ;-)

However...seriously...this thread just made me take a look at my 5300c.
Guess what -- I have the same problem as R. P. Bell with his Pismo.
Namely, if I open it and look at it from behind (someone else's possible
view if I had it sitting open on a picnic table), the Apple logo is
indeed upside down -- but if I shut the lid and look at it from above,
the logo is right-side-up again.

This being the case -- if anyone ever makes a comment about my upside
down Apple logo (which no one ever has), I shall therefore appropriate
Howard's reply. Hope you don't mind, Howard. ;-)

Re: Junkyard Pismo ?

2005-05-27 Thread michel
Your completely right. When I build my Pismo , I had one from a friend to
test the parts.:-)
Michel

The problem with constructing a 'Book (or any 'puter really) from bits is
that without a complete correctly working unit in which to test parts
it'll be very frustrating not being able to figure which part(s) is
 causing the inevitable problems.

Though it runs counter to the OP's original proposal, it's much better to
first buy a complete, working unit, then patiently source the bits for
the second unit. Trust me (hard-won-lesson), troubleshooting without
known-working spares is a total headache. Thus the
 rock-solid-totally-logical-can't-argue-with-common-sense reason I always
have wy more Macs than I _really_ need. :-)

Re: Pismo...upside down logo

2005-05-27 Thread Jennifer Worgan
place Pismo logo side down on a good color copier
copy
cut out the logo with enough background color to cove the original logo
treat the surface with spray acylic or laminate
glue over top of old logo in any direction you want it

alternative
glue the botton of a snap on top of original logo
glue a hammered thin piece of lead or solder wire to the back of the bottom
edge of the new logo
glue to of snap to the new logo copy made above
lubricate top of snap with something like WD-40
snap on to top
for protection from rub against other objects - glue a clear plastic or
glass dome such as the glass/plastic on analog watches (from a cheap watch)
over the logo/snap apparatus.

if the snap is lubricated adequately and free moving, the weight (hammered
thin piece of lead or solder wire) should be pulled by gravity downward
keeping the logo upright with regards to the ground when opened

a lightweight spring could be added underneath the logo to return it
original (or desired) position when flat

cost::
snap, glue, sping, cheap watch, color copy - under $10

the envy of other Pismo owners with logos that appear upside down when open
? ...but probably not price less

I also don't see why it's such a big deal about the Apple logo being upside

logo orientation is part of Apple's Think Different campaign.

Junkyard 1400's

2005-05-27 Thread Richard Adams

SNIP

My experience is somewhat similar, Ron. I got my first PowerBook 1400 for
$10 (including a carrying case and power supply), and it worked like a
champ. I then bought a supposedly non-working PB1400 for $6 to get the
bookcover (my original did not have it). Found out AFTER bending the pins
in the socket that the display cables plug into on the MOBO that it
actually did work (although the display was then punked out). Salvaged
pieces off that one to repair three more PB1400's that I got for $20,
$10, and $5, respectively. So, for $51, I have 4 working Powerbooks and a
partial parts machine. Can't complain too much about that.

Ciao,

Winfidel

__

Cool moniker Winfidel. And this is all very interesting.

But I am learning nothing about what parts combinations vis a vie Pismo (
remember the PB mentioned in the subject line?) that I should avoid. And
any trickiness to assembly..

--
Adrian

No help on that here, Adrian, sorry, my top machine is a 3400C (which I got
at a better price than the 1400 - a friend gave it to me because it wouldn't
power up. Turned out it had a bad power supply, nothing more). So I'm afraid
I don't know much about the Pismo.

Good luck with your FrankenPismo, Doctor. Didn't mean to 'semi-hijack' your
thread ;^{D

Re-titled subject line, accordingly.

Ciao,

Winfidel

I own a 1400and I LOVE the keyboard, it is actual standard size and
the keys are great. I took two pictures. . .

If you are considering a Power Book for keyboard I would go with the

It is up to you.

Dan,

I write a lot of text as part of my work. The keyboard on the 1400 is
fabulous, perhaps the best keyboard of any powerbook, ever, far better
than the spongy one on this TiBook I'm using to write this message... I
tried a 3400 and didn't like it. Don't know the 2400 from experience.

1400 is the best. Ever.
It has a nice thick aluminum plate below the keys, so you don't get
the flex that happens in the 500/5300/3400 series. Good action on the
keys, too.
