Wasn't there also something about LiOn batteries (at least the early ones)
catching on fire in the 5300?

Re: Batteries

2005-06-08 Thread Fluxstringer

I'm not looking for a debate. I'm just wondering why a lithium ion
battery would not charge in a 5300.

Because Apple says so! The prototype 5300s did have LiOn batteries.
Then there was the the event that started the flaming battery
rumors. I'm not going to say what happened because I don't know and
the story is clear as mud. But something happened and Apple
replaced the LiOn with NiMH and redesigned it to not charge LiOn.

Then the 3400 and latter the G3 came out and they do have LiOn.
They can charge and use either NiMH or LiOn.

I'd just get two batteries and the LIon charger. You just have to remember to
take the battery out and put it in the charger when it gets low.

The biggest problem with rebuilding a LiON is cell availability. The
are rarely available as individual cells and finding the right form
factor cells is going to be harder still.

You would only want to rebuild a LiON battery pack with LiON cells.
There is a part inside the battery packs which tells the computer
(charging circuit) what kind of battery it is. If you were to
rebuild a NiMH pack with LiON cells the pack would still be
identified as NiMH and the results could be BAD (tm).

Is that the Rom on the Lombard or with the Cardbus itself? If it's the
Lombard, it still wouldn't explain why with the Lombard running at
normal mode, it won't see my desktop in Target Disk Mode being the

Likely OT_ zooming scrolling OS 9.2

Hello,

Is there any way to control the zooming scrolling problem in OS 9.2?
Since I've switched to 9.2, when I'm working in, for example, pagemaker,
when I use the cursor to drag to select and hit the edge of the window, the
page scrolls by so fast it's impossible to stop where you want. I've tried
adjusting mouse speed but it has no effect.

Any ideas?

I consider anything under 7 pounds to be fairly light. Now, as far as
durability goes, is the 1400 pretty tough, or do you have to be fairly gentle
with it, as I really need a durable, reliable machine. Then again, from the

Caleb

I recently aquired a 1400 and am the process of beefing it up. It
didn't have a CD but did have 2 x PSU's! 24MB RAM and now a 6GB HD (so
has my Pismo) and a wireless card (not much luck with that yet) and
have ordered a reasonable battery from a trusted seller on eBay (I've
previously bought a CD and a processor upgrade for the 1400 from him)
It has ethernet in place of a modem card but since I moved the card
I've lost ethernet :-( It worked previously so I can only assume it's
down to me fiddling

I also have a G3 Pismo that I'm about to put on eBay. The G3 is a
better computer than the 1400 hands down - but it's keyboard sucks. On
top of that the keyboard just looks cheap and nasty, like all that
multi coloured translucent junk that came out in the wake of the
'Fruit' iMacs. I have an iMac rev C and a G3 233 as my main and backup
machines

The 1400 is a nice robust machine - let's face it, if we all had the
choice we'd go for the top of the range PowerBook

Back on earth I intend to use my 1400 for basic wp and will use it as
a as a glorified PDA/email/light surfing mobile around the flat
(apartment to you USA types ;-) ) My master plan is to get a Mini as a
main machine and stick my 20 Apple monitor on it

I'm quite happy to spend some money on the 1400 for the same reason
others have mentioned - the keyboard. It is superb. have the
following: PB100, 180, 540, 1400, 5300 and a G3 and the 1400 has the
best keyboard of all of them

Why not get both?

Oh, no!

2005-06-08 Thread Ian Nixon
Today, I picked up my PowerBook in a bag, and was walking down the
stairs, when all of a sudden, I heard a loud BANG! on the floor...I
hesitated for a moment, and then looked down, and saw the PowerBook on
the ground. The lid latch had broken off, but I'm not concerned with
that at this moment...

I started it up, and it said that there was a problem with RAM, and it
was really sluggish to start up. The only RAM that the PB sees is the
16MB built in to the logic board. I took the keyboard off and reseated
the module, but alas, it didn't work. Is there something wrong with
just the RAM card or the logic board?

Also, anyone know where I can get a new latch for the display?

Thanks in advance...

Ian

Because Apple says so! The prototype 5300s did have LiOn
batteries. Then there was the the event that started the flaming
battery rumors. I'm not going to say what happened because I
don't know and the story is clear as mud. But something happened
and Apple replaced the LiOn with NiMH and redesigned it to not
charge LiOn.

Then the 3400 and latter the G3 came out and they do have LiOn.
They can charge and use either NiMH or LiOn.

Would those have been the ones associated with reports of fire?

Yes

Wasn;t that at a very early time in the development of Li-on cells.

Yes

Would anyone have any information as to whether a laptop battery
should NOT be rebuilt with Li-on cells?

The biggest problem with rebuilding a LiON is cell availability.
The are rarely available as individual cells and finding the right
form factor cells is going to be harder still.

--

???

The Nimh cells I have charge at a slower/lower rate than the Lion
cells I have For various things around the house.
Sellers of the Lion cells say they will charge in any charger but
sell special ones for high charge rates that recarge very fast.

I have no idea what form factor fits inside the 5300 battery pack
But recently looked for 4/3 A batteries for my7 1400 and Li-on
batteries that size are available.

But as you say the electronics may( or may not? ) present a problem
in switching over.

Current limits, float / cutoff voltages and in some cases temperature
limits are all likely different between the two. Lithium are likely
to have a higher maximum charge current. Thus if you use a NiMH
charger it will take longer. The float / cutoff voltage is likely
different between the two. I don't know what they are. But they are
almost certainly different. If the charger voltage is lower than the
battery it won't charge fully. If it's higher it will likely damage
the battery.

The thing I've found with all rechargeable batteries is that the
better the charger the longer they last and the more operating time
you get from them. Which means that using a charger meant for a
different type of battery is nothing but trouble.

Any electrical engineers out there with suggestions?

Never a whimper from it.

I really like it. At a stock 166 MHz it handles things outside the

With only 40 MB RAM and an 18 MB overhead in RAM from running OS 9.1
( because I like the features and I couldn't find my *.5 disk when I
needed a reinstall).
8.6 is certainly better for the RAM limits though. And I don't like
a constantly grinding hard drive so I don't use VM.

I recently got an Orinoco Silver for it and as soon as I can get the
cells to rebuild the battery I will start taking it to school more.

A 1400 would be exactly what you are looking for. It's on of my

stolen either. I have a 1400c/166 I use sometimes when I can just so
my AlG4 doesn't get stolen. The G4 kinda attracts attention.

And there are lots of 1400's and add-ons for sale. And lots of cool
stuff you can get for a 1400.

I am not very good at typing, have big clumsy fingers and the 1400's
keyboard works good for me and I think it has a better feel than my G4

And you can get a pretty decent 1400 set-up for a little more than $50.00.
