OT- What non-Macs do you own?

2005-08-13 Thread Caleb Cupples
I noticed it getting quiet and I was just curious to know what non-Macs all
you have. Please list OS and processor type.

My Non-Macs are:

Setsuna: HP Pavilion a520n, AMD Athlon XP 3200+ Barton @ 2.1 Ghz , SuSE Linux
9.1 Professional

and

Hotaru: Toshiba Satellite 325 CDT, Intel Pentium I MMX @ 233 Mhz, RedHat Linux
7.3 Publishers Edition

As you can tell, I have a habit of naming my computers after my favourite
Sailor Moon characters..

Looking forward to hearing what y'all have,

Caleb

Hmmm, well, are non-Macs really that common among Mac owners who are
serious enough about their Macs to be on LEM lists?

I don't have any non-Macs...what would I do with one, when everything I
have to do is not only possible, but all set up and running, on my Macs?
What do you do with your Linux computers that you can't/don't do with
your Macs? See, my boyfriend is a Linux man (RedHat mostly up till
recently, but now he's using Feather), but he ended up one from a
combination of a past Unix background, his lack of interest in spending
what he considered exorbitant sums of money on a Mac, and he refused to
do Windoze.

Re: OT- What non-Macs do you own?

2005-08-13 Thread LoveThemBeatles2
What was the question??? something about Linux

Why would anyone own a non-Mac? H that's a very good point.

I remember back in middle school we had Commodore 64's and Apple II's, then
somewhere along the line I acquired an IBM XT. It didn't even run Windoze,
DOS 5.0 if I remember correctly.

Now quickly fast forward some years and BINGO you can buy a Windoze machine
for under $400.00 with a decent 15 inch monitor.Last I checked the
cheapest Mini Mac after buying USB keyboard and mouse was well over the
Budget PC

But remember ... You get what you pay for..

At our break room in the world's #1 retailer the main reason other
associates gawk at my 1400 is because most of them have never seen or used a
Mac.

A while back I had heard a co-worker had bought his wife a Jaguar.

So you bought your wife a new car...Jaguar?

NO!!! I bought her a new Mac..it runs Jaguar

Oh

Then he proceeded to explain all that it does, how easy to use...etc etc
Of course he also mentions how much he paid for it $!

Hey for that kind of money are you sure she can't drive it?

with that he called me a typical Windoze user and the conversation ended.

Caleb

While I have quite a few Macs and Apples, I think most of my collection
is x86 based. I'll start with the newer ones then delve a bit into my
collection a bit:
AMD Athlon 2500/1 gig ram/2x80 gig drives in raid 0 and a new 16xSamsung
dvd writer, Windows ME
three Celerons for the kids, 466/700/700 with 98 in one and the others
use ME
a very cool and quick Toshiba 2615 laptop using ME, but with a DVD drive
that is so smooth it is hard to believe it's a Celeron 466 with 128 ram.

All of the above are networked with my g3/333 and my two 3400cs.

My collection of oldies includes such unique items as a Toshiba 6066c
semi-laptop with a DX2-66 486 chip and 98 as an os. Full size scsi CD
drive/ IDE hard drive (3.5 inch) but no battery. Nice color screen.
Gridcase 1520 286 - unknown OS - same unit as used in Aliens. It's a
magnesium laptop, very solid, made for military use.
A NeXT box, several PCjrs, several PS2 models from IBM both laptops and
desktops as well as a huge server unit , several Commodore
128s/64s/286s/ as well as a KIM 1, Tandys of many descriptions including
the small TRS80 and a couple of laptops with integral printers, several
Apple clones including a Laser 128 as well as a Decider which is in
perfect condition but I know nothing about it other than it's an Apple
II clone, an Orange Micro, two Franklin Aces, several Hyperions which
were 8088 based and were sold before the Compaq portable. The Hyperions
were made and sold in Canada (some were later made in Houston) and the
company had Michael Copeland on board before he decided to run and ruin
Corel, an Alextel which is 8088 based as I recall and was a forerunner
of the Internet here in Canada. You could subscribe to data from Bell
and play games and check stocks/scores etc. The phone still works as
does the screen but the subscription service is long gone. Ran around
1981 or just a bit later. Small unit with a 9 inch screen and flipdown
keyboard/touchpad.

If anyone here collects old computers, they may want to have their names
added to the collector's list that I maintain in two places, one as a
link from my geocities home page and the other as a geocities site on
it's own. Tip : If you look up 'antique computers' on google, my site
pops up in the fifth and sixth spot. Email me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] if you want to be added to the list, DON'T
reply to this email please. The list has some of the 'big' names in
computer collecting on it so you'll be in pretty heady company if you
decide to join. Hey, it's free too. Only serious collectors who are
willing to perform rescues of equipment need apply! Thanks.

Caleb writes,

Also, most of my compilers and my preferred office suite are Linux and

Oops...sorry I forgot about you cross-platform software designers out
there.Yes, that's a big one.

Excellent point. Of course, I rely on my Linux machines, because it was
cheaper to have my 190 and convert the Windoze machines to Linux than it
would have been to go all Mac.

People actually throw out PCs and monitors in amazing quantities, as I
learned from my boyfriend. He picks them up, takes them home, cleans them
up a bit if they need it, and turns them into FREE working Linux
machines. ;-) He won't spend money at all to buy himself a computer of
any kind -- he doesn't have to. On top of that, because he's a packrat
who snares spares of computers, keyboards, mice and monitors too
(something dies, he walks across the room and attaches a new one), when
the monitor for MY G3 died not too long ago, he was able to spare THREE
monitors. One is the beautiful 17-incher (my old one was 14) presently
on the G3, plus two spares. Those are 14s, but it's fine: at the whopping
sum of $0.00 for both of us, the price was certainly right and the only
complaint I had about my former monitor wasn't that it was only a
14-incher, but rather that its death was VERY badly timed. (Even though I
have the two spares now, I've implemented certain precautions so I'll
never have to go through that again.)

I use my Linux desktop for the same things I use the Mac for when I'm
away.
However, I prefer reading on the 190. It's something about that soothing
greyscale screen.

Now, this is interesting. I like my laptop to mirror the desktop as
closely as possible. In fact, I need for this to be the case. While the
experience with the untimely death of the G3 monitor illustrated this
most strongly, it's true in general because writing is my primary use of
a computer. That is, while I'm most comfortable on the larger keyboard of
the desktop, I don't like to be chained inside the apartment either.
Having the Powerbook mirror the desktop closely means that I can transfer
what I'm working on from the desktop to the Powerbook, then back again
when I get home. Not to mention the ease of keeping a backup system:
since the G3 is regularly backed up with both Zip and CDs, so is the
Powerbook. If the apps and data on the Powerbook magically disappeared,
all I'd have to do to reload the Powerbook is transfer it over from the
G3. I've made the necessary transfers to date via printer port network,
but newly arrived in today's mail: I just got one of those HDI-SCSI
adapters for $6 on the Swap List (if I'd had this when the G3 monitor
died, I'd have been fine: watching the Swap List and then buying this
little baby as soon as I saw it listed is one of the aforementioned
precautions I took for future similar incidents). As soon as I get done
here, I'm going to go play with it -- there's something I want to
transfer which is too big for a floppy, but not big enough to make it
worth it to set up the printer port network: the plan is hooking the
Powerbook up to the Zip drive.

I'm not going to go all Linux advocate on ya. I'm a Mac guy at heart,
but the
cost of a new Mac, or even a PPC PowerBook comparable to my old Satellite
is
more than I'm going to spend. As I said, I love my 190 so much that I
could
marry it. I just can't afford to go Mac only.

That's OK if you do go Linux crazy. I'm kind of used to it, thanks to my
Linux-loving boyfriend, who praises it not just because of the fact that
he can always construct a working Linux machine, but also because Linux
itself is free and has the open source, letting him customize it to his
own liking. As to how come I can afford to be on Mac exclusively, by the
way, my 5300c, G3 and 190 came off the Swap List and Fleabay, for the
whopping sums (hahaha!) of $30, $15 and $25 respectively. There's no way
in hell I could afford to walk into a store and buy a brand new Mac
either..and quite frankly, now that I know I don't HAVE to, thanks to the
Swap List, I wouldn't buy a new one even if I COULD. (Kind of like my
boyfriend, collecting all those junked computers and peripherals even
though he DID have the money to buy new ones.)

Well, enough rambling already. Time to go play with my new SCSI adapter.
:-)

~Yersinia.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the
courage to change the things I can change, and the weaponry to make the
difference.

Re: OT - What non-Macs do you own?

2005-08-13 Thread Doc Holliday

In addition to my current Macs:

PowerMac G4 400 MHz Sawtooth

2 PowerBook 3400c's

1 PowerBook 1400c

[I am a little thin on PowerBooks right now]

I have several other non-Mac systems:

Dell 500MHz PIII, Dell 700MHz PIII and a Dell PII laptop

I needed Windoze boxes for business - gotta have complete complete
compatibility for clients. All Dell's have been sitting in boxes for
nearly four years.

Sun SPARCstation 5

Runs DNS, BIND, Web and email server. Running Red Hat, right now. Will
be switched to Solaris 8, shortly, and a fresh copy of Apache installed.

Currently lusting after a MIPS4400 Silicon Graphics Indy on eBay

Will be used to run Alias Wavefront and other assorted 3D graphics
programs not available on for MacOS X

I suppose, I could use a MacOS X machine for DNS, BIND, Apache and
email, but I don't want to bog down my primary desktop and I bought the
Sun for much less than I could buy a G4 or G5 for a server. I, also,
have been called a UNIX snob.

Hmmm, well, are non-Macs really that common among Mac owners who are
serious enough about their Macs to be on LEM lists?

I don't have any non-Macs...what would I do with one, when everything I
have to do is not only possible, but all set up and running, on my Macs?
What do you do with your Linux computers that you can't/don't do with
your Macs? See, my boyfriend is a Linux man (RedHat mostly up till
recently, but now he's using Feather), but he ended up one from a
combination of a past Unix background, his lack of interest in spending
what he considered exorbitant sums of money on a Mac, and he refused to
do Windoze.

Word processing on 68K.

I'm running Word 5.1 on my 190, but I'm looking for a wordprocessor that's a
little more compatible with the newer stuff, such as AppleWorks 6, for when I
have to print stuff on my grandpa's computer, and decent compatibility with
MS Office 97, for Windoze. I do have ClarisWorks 4, but I don't like it very
well.

more powerful, but I haven't used it too too much.

If none of there fit you just have a look on

Sounds like what happens when you get a mismatch between LCD and logic
board.

AFAIK an inverter board powers the backlight, it has nothing to do with
actually driving the display.

Re: Word processing on 68K.Compatibility?

2005-08-13 Thread Dale Hill
What is this nonsense about compatibility? Every wordprocesser is compatible
with any other. I use Scorpio as my basic wordprocesser. I own my own copy. It
will unformat any worprocessor's output. The only machine I cannot use as a
text-file producer is Commodore 64. But, since my Commodore 128 has CPM
ability, I can run Word Star on it. Thus, transfer Commodore 64, to a text
file, move it to CPM. Then Move that text file to my TRS-80 Model 4, which can
transfer that to MS-DOS, and voila!! Apple or Macintosh for ever.

The problems come in, not with wordprocessing but, when pictures are formatted
into the text. But with Scorpio, who needs the pictures.

I love old computers and what they can do. I was a horrible typewriter, even
electric, and I celebrated when I bought Alwrite for the TRS-80 Model 4,
probably the best wordprocessor ever made. I buried that electric typwriter in
our gardon and planted green beans over it. P-) Can you imagine having a
computer that freezes up if you accidentally leave a diskette in drive A? Which
machine does that?
