I agree with the other listers; without a G3 upgrade in your 1400, running
OS9 , while certainly possible (a friend has it on his 5300ce!) , is not going
to set any speed records. A 233mhz G3 processor should be in the $50 range
now, or even cheaper is the 183mhz PPC upgrade, if you can find one.

I would also say get yourself the RAM module you need to boost your onboard
RAM up to the max 64mb. Then, instead of using virtual, get yourself a copy of
RAM Doubler. That at least makes the 64mb ceiling possible to deal with.

Finally, apart from some high-end things, 8.6 and 9.0 seem pretty much the
same to me, although admittedly I may not know what I am talking about. I
remember I once was interesed in putting iTunes on my main Powerbook, and
contemplated moving to OS9, but then I found a patch that would allow iTunes to
be used
it 8.6.

Anyway, good luck, and have fun! Patiently upgrading is half the excitement
of resurrecting old 'books!

Cheap and 3400 do not go together. When I was looking for a replacement
for my faithful 190, I seriously considered a 3400, but I decided to
spend the little extra cash and get a G3 Lombard. I remember the
cheapest Kanga was only $30 cheaper than my Lombard, and the 3400 parts
machines were going for over $125 on fleabay, so be warned. Of course,
this was during the holiday rush, and I bought my Lombard two days
after Thanksgiving, so the prices may have dropped a lot.

Especially since the lister in need only needs a PRAM battery and the cable
from it to the PMU.

With patience, the right 3400c, with a smashed/non-working LCD or something,
could be found for around the $40-$50 range. Maybe even a non-externally
damaged unit, with a mystery problem. I sometimes roll the dice on those,
usually
with positive results.

I would be wary of I don't know what's wrong with it auctions from places
that sell many Apple computers, though.

I've tried OS 9.1 on all three of the 1400 flavors and even with 64MB
of RAM they don't run nealry as quick as with OS 8.6. I have always
put OS 8.6 back on the 1400's because it they were too slow.

Without a G3 upgrade in a 1400 it will not handle OS 9 very well.

Re: 3400c Power Issues

2006-01-17 Thread Roger Volk

Ian,

Problem could be as simple as reseating the power supply board, but
could also indicate a failed board or worse still the GLOD or acute
sleeping sickness, both unrepairable motherboard issues.

Parts for the machine, if no one on the list have them are available
from, The PowerBook Guy http://www.powerbookguy.com/, Mac Resq, and a
number of others available thru a web search.

Hi all...

My 3400c is acting very strangely. Here's the scoop:

When I use it with the battery in and the A/C adapter plugged in, the
PB will boot fine. Then about 10 minutes after boot-up, the control
strip and the menu bar items will show that the PB is using only
battery power, and occasionally the icons will switch to A/C for a few
seconds, but then back to the battery. The battery level also
fluctuates. It'll be at 0:24, then all of a sudden 2:12, then back
down to 0:03. Now, I wouldn't be worried if it was using the A/C
adapter in the background and showed the icons on the screen with the
battery, but it actually is *using* the battery!

When I try to boot with the battery, I just hear a loud CLICK CLICK
CLICK CLICK from the speakers for about 10 seconds, and then the LED
in the corner of the display housing is solidly lit. I have tried the
steps to resetting the power manager to no avail.

I was thinking about purchasing a new Li-Ion battery on eBay for $15,
but I wanted to get your opinions first...

TIA,
Ian

PS -- I have no PRAM battery installed because of the infamous
corrosion of the contacts.

Re: 1400 Mac OS 9

2006-01-17 Thread Richard Adams

Welcome back, Noah!

I've never run OS 9, so I have no input (other than to say I repeatedly hear
that it runs kinda slow on a stock 1400). Are you thinking of getting a G3
upgrade at some point?

What features of OS9 are you really wanting to get? I've considered it, but
haven't heard any compelling reasons to get off 8.5 yet.

Also, I'm a bit curious how you make do with such a smallish hard drive. I
get by okay on one about the same size, but I'm more willing than most to
run older (therefore, smaller) versions of many of my apps. Even at that,
though, I'm starting to feel the squeeze. What applications (and versions)
are you running on your machine?

Thanks for any insights,

Richard

You might do better looking for a new PRAM battery, I believe they come
with the cable you are talking about, if I am thinking of the right
thing. IIRC I bought one for $5 new (maybe it was from OWC or MacResQ?)
a year or so ago.

Re: 3400c Power Issues

2006-01-17 Thread Roger Volk

Bev,

There is a short jumper that goes from the battery connector to the
power supply board, I too have had Ian's problem in getting them
seperated, in fact I destroyed one, and in the other 2 cases I gave up
trying to seperate them and resorted to replacement, but replacing the
battery and cable is relitively cheap and easy.

I'm a big fan of both RamDoubler and SpeedDoubler--both work really well
