The PB1400 is a great notebook!!

I've got a brand spankin' new iBook G4 800 and I still use my
PB1400. It's a solid workhorse for what I do. It's built like a tank
and as an extra bonus, the keyboard top notch.

Really, though, my iBook's Airport power cable went out and the 1400
was a pretty cheap way to keep checking email downstairs wirelessly,
even with just the 117. If you're geeky enough to be using a 1400 in

I would suggest an Asante Mini EN/SC. It's a SCSI to Ethernet adapter that
fits on your HDI scsi port and is powered by your serial port if I remember
correctly. Do a search on google and a great place to find them would be the
swap list and eBay.

Faint Horizontal Lines - PB1400c Screen Problem

2003-09-02 Thread Christopher Kolp
It's a great time to chime in with my own 1400 screen problem!

After changing the hard drive out in it I've now got light lines that go
horizontally across the screen when a dialog box is open. If all is hidden,
and the desktop is in full view, there are no lines.

They're hard to describe, maybe a faint light white line that matches the
positioning of the horizontal lines on/in the dialog boxes (top and bottom
edge, any straight horizontal edge inside, etc). It appears that they only
show up when a horizontal line does, no text or anything else.

My 1400cs (no longer have it) used to do this but that was normal for the
dual scan screen. This, however, is not.

If anyone knows what could be wrong and possibly give me some advice, I'd
certainly appreciate it.

I checked to see if I pinched something when taking the drive out but
there's really nothing to pinch. Also, I've reinstalled 9.1 to no avail
thinking maybe some weird software error.

Thanks everyone,

Chris

Those drivers won't work with the 1400. They require PC Card Manager
v.3.0 and the 1400 uses 2.0. It's in the firmware and isn't upgradeable.

Re: Dead 140

2003-06-04 Thread Christopher Kolp
My PowerBook 145 did that when I purchased it. It wouldn't start off Battery
of AC power.

Turns out the battery was toast and prevented it from starting up properly.
My solution was to run it with no battery and just off AC Power. Battery in,
no startup. Battery out, works great!

Give that a try, it might point you in the right direction,

Can you use a PowerBook 1400 while lid is closed? (usingvideo-out)

2003-06-03 Thread Christopher Kolp
Hello PowerBook users everywhere!

Before I purchase an internal video-out card for it, does anyone know if you
can operate the PowerBook 1400 with the lid closed if you use an external
keyboard, mouse and monitor?

The new Powerbooks can do this but iBooks can't, which I assume is not
because it can't but because they want you to spend more for additional
features. However, the PowerBook 1400 wasn't a budget notebook at the time
and the video out card supports video mirroring, which seems ideally suited
for this application...

If anyone of you PowerBook 1400 guru's can shed some light on this It'd be
much appreciated,

Thanks in advance,

Chris K.

PowerBook 1400 Battery Reconditioning Problem

2003-05-29 Thread Christopher Kolp
Hello everyone!

As some may or may not know, I recently purchased two
PowerBook 1400s for my wife and I. We've loved the design
since way back and found two killer deals on them.

Anyways...

So they arrive and they work great and look like they've never
been taken out of the box. Execept for the batteries, they both
left much to be desired. The machines work flawlessly though.

My battery would last a good 3-5 minutes and then hit "reserve power"
and hers would last approx. 30-35 minutes and do the same. I figured
some battery reconditioning was in order before I set out for new
batteries at $100+ each.

I used Battery Amnesia on mine, the latest version, after reading
its rave reviews on the web. It worked. I now have a good 40 minutes
of battery power, not too shabby! When I ran the program it would kill
the battery in a matter of ohh.. 1hr 30mins to 2hrs and I'd recharge
fully and do it again. Did it 6 times until I saw consistant results.
All is well on that one.

On hers, I haven't been able to kill the battery. When I run Battery Amnesia
it'll get to the point where the system says "It's running on very low power
and will go to sleep to save the system." At that point it goes to sleep
and will not wake up. And that's it. If I let it, it'll sleep for 10+ hours
like that. I finally was tired after hour 10 and plugged it in and canceled
it. Mine did that but would die some time later. Maybe 20 mins.

So I figured I'd try Apple's Battery Reconditioning. Tried it on mine first
and it worked. I followed the instructions, plugged it in, and let it do its
thing. A couple of hours later, I was done. On hers, it sits there for 8+
hours trying to work. I gave up after 8 hours (and trying battery amnesia
previously 4 times) and figured someone out there could shed some light on
this.

Appologies for the long email but it bugs me when I get an email asking for
help and the problem is a one-liner or not described properly.

Here are the specs on the two machines, for what it's worth:

(The one with the battery recondition problem)
PowerBook 1400c
MacOS 9.0.4
NewerTech 250/1MB G3 Upgrade (latest newer drivers from OWC)
64 MB RAM
6 GB IBM HD
Floppy Drive (have cd but floppy stays in)
Battery

(The one that battery reconditioning works on)
PowerBook 1400cs
MacOS 9.1 (but also worked when it arrived with 7.6)
NewerTech 250/1MB G3 Upgrade (latest newer drivers from OWC)
64 MB RAM
750 MB HD
Floppy Drive
Battery

Thanks in advance,

Chris K.

Looking For Japanese Version of MacOS And/Or PowerBook 2400c -Any Ideas?

2002-07-30 Thread Christopher Kolp

Hey all,

Maybe someone out there can help me! I'm looking for the Japanese version of
MacOS (9.x will do fine) or the Japanese Language Kit for it. I'm yet to
find either one of them on the web, which is quite strange.

I'm also in the market for a Japanese version of a PowerBook 2400c which was
sold primarily overseas, but again, I cannot find one that's non-English!

If anyone has any ideas or would like to sell one or more of the above, that
would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Re: WTB: Wallstreet upgrades...

2002-07-14 Thread Christopher Kolp

Supposedly you can put up to 512MB of ram in it if you
use special low profile chips. Those are available from
www.macsales.com for a pretty good price.

What speed WallStreet? The WallStreet Series II is the oldest
notebook officially supported by Apple to run OSX. They can
upgrade to 9.2.2 or OSX.

As far as a CD-R/CD-RW, I read somewhere that MCE made
a CD-RW drive for the WallStreets bay but that was a long
time ago and most people that made accessories for it
no longer do.

A DVD player was a factory option (on series II) when they
were sold new. You can purchase the drives and a PCMCIA
decoder card from pbparts.com for a couple hundred bucks.
This is not compatible with OSX but works fine with 9.x.

They can also do some processor upgrades!
Sonnet makes a G3/500 upgrade for the series II wallstreets
for $299.00 and PowerLogix has a G4/500 upgrade for the
series II for $499.00 available at www.macsales.com

Good luck!

Chris

PowerBook WallStreet Battery Charging Problem

2002-07-07 Thread Christopher Kolp

Hey all,

I recently purchased a PowerBook WallStreet 300Mhz. notebook and have
had problems charging the battery. Everything is in A+ condition so I
know
it hasn't been abused.

It works fine on the Battery and will last 2hrs 15mins or so and will
charge
fine when it's turned off or asleep. However, if I try to use the
PowerBook
and charge it at the same time it takes 6+ hours to charge. WAY more than
it does when it's off or asleep.

I read somewhere that it has to do with the PMU and to try Apple's
Battery Reset.
Well, I tried it and it did nothing for it.

The AC Adapter was exchanged for the newer Yo-Yo style when it became
available.

Any idea what is wrong with it? And if something needs replacing, could
someone
suggest a place to have it done? Possibly do it myself?

AppleCare ran out in Dec. 2001 so I'm SOL with having Apple do it. I
would only
feel comfortable with Apple fixing it but their prices for out of
warranty work are
outrageous!!!

Thanks in advance!

Chris

Try google.com

Otherwise, you may need a Lucent Orinoco card which has open source
drivers available for mac.

Custom Painted PowerBook Wallstreet Gallery!

2002-06-30 Thread Christopher Kolp

Hey all!

I recently ran into this site that showcases customized PowerBook
Wallstreet G3s.

This may be old news but I had yet to see them of this quality.

Has anyone had any experiences with painting theirs?

Here's a gallery of some AMAZING ones.

http://www.powerbook.org/soberay/Gallery-e.html

Any feedback is appreciated! I'll be calling the local auto paint shops
to see
if they'll spray the case plastics if I take it apart and mask it!
