PCMCIA 1 yes 2 ??

2003-11-04 Thread D. Wakefield (DTP etc!)

I have three cards (usb, firewire, wifi) which each seem to work agreeably singularly
through out a given session cycle. That is, that if they were in the computer and
opperational when it shut down and no one disturbs the it, it will reawaken at startup
and be normal. The curiosity is that when both slots are full this is not true. If at
shutdown, both slots were loaded when the next start up takes place it is quite likely
that neither card will awaken. Through experimentation, I have discovered that if you
wait for the memory check to be over and just at the moment the screen begins to lite
up, you can shove the wifi card into either the upper or lower slot until it locks
into place, watch for its lite to come on, and only then (still before the smiley Mac
face appears) shove and lock either the usb or firewire card into place). Position
doesn't seem to matter but timeing does. Admittedly I am new to this CardBus stuff but
this does not seem right to me. Does anybody have any light to shed on this behavior?

Update on Zip COD problem

2003-10-29 Thread D. Wakefield (DTP etc!)

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions for my sickly Zip Cartridge. The winning
magic was using Disk Warrior 2.0. It churned for a while and complained about
everything on the disk being wrong, and then reported: Rebuilding Directory Structure,
Repairing Volume Info, Repairing Critical Volume Info, and within each of the
categories there was a long list of items which were changed. The clicking stopped,
the image appeared on the desktop, and the files were off loaded to a CD. (Just in
case). The program then asked if I would like to save its directory and after saying
yes, the disk now appears to be normal. Power on and off tricks, gentle nudging,
Norton Tools, Iomega Tools, and Disk Repair, were all useless but I can recommend
whole heartedly Disk Warrior 2.0! It was able to change my Click of Death into only
a Click of Faint.

IE is a clepto

2003-10-28 Thread D. Wakefield (DTP etc!)

I just reinstalled system 9.1 and was rudely reminded that as part of that install,
Internet Explorer hijacks all browser activity.

Case in point: When surfing within Mozilla, I often drag the bookmark to the desktop
to create and simple, quick return alias. After closing Mozilla, you would expect that
you could double click and go back using Mozilla (since it created the alias) to
revisit the page. The way the system works now is that when I start in Mozilla, drag a
bookmark to the desktop, close Mozilla, and double click on the desktop icon, we wake
up IE (not Mozilla) and go to the page with Explorer. I don't want to use IE unless I
specifically select it.

I corrected this problem a long time ago, but can no longer remember where to find the
window which allows me to change that IE relationship and switch the default to
Mozilla? Can someone help me?

Zip problem

2003-10-27 Thread D. Wakefield (DTP etc!)

Does anybody know a way to extract information from a Zip 100 cartridge which refuses
to mount? I have tried several drives and in each I get: Click... Click... Click...
Click... would you like to initialize this disk?

Norton 6 does not seem to see it unless there is a trick I don't know to force it!

I would hate to think the information is in there but irretrievable.

brbrbrThat sounds a lot like interference. Have you tried some different
brfrequencies on the base station.

I have to admit that I have not used EVERY channel but I have gone from one end to
another with little change. I settled on channel 3 since every once in a while, a
second (channel 1, Linksys) and a third (channel 6, unknown brand, which has been
renamed to the owner's business) WAP presence is identified. Always with very low
signal strength but they do give me a clue as to which channels NOT to use. Other than
that I don't have any obvious sources for interference. My wireless phone is old
technology (900mHz) and my microwave is not being used at the same time.

 It does work great.

Great my be an overstatement!

However, I can't get the signal strength indicator above
about 1/3, even with the 5300 right next to the access
 point's antenna.

I find that it is usable on my 3400 (provided you are willing to reboot often, since
the weakness and instability seems to grow with length of connection time) but I also
must report reception issues. It appears to me that the card zones in and out on a
regular basis. I have placed it within inches of the WAP antenna and watched the level
fluctuate from teens to 90% repeatedly. Each cycle taking perhaps 3 to 5 seconds.
Eventually it will loose connection altogether and at that point rebooting is the only
way to reestablish contact with the card.

Yeah, but as someone already pointed out, that is only an 802.11b (11Mbps) not an
802.11g (54Mbps) card. Plus I've been told that the Cardbus 802.11g cards are
incompatible with the 3400's PCMCIA interface. I haven't heard a definitive
explanation of this.

=

The Skyline is not exactly a stock Cardbus design which is why the card will
definitely work in a 3400 (I have one and it works with the caviate I mentioned
earlier.) The reason Cardbus is not officially supported in the 3400 is that
technology marched on and the Cardbus cards took on a slightly different shape. The
connection transport mechanism is slightly different in machines which are really
Cardbus compliant. The card's pins will align and the computer circuitry is in place
in a 3400, but there is a ridge or bump on the side of the track mechanism in the 3400
which will get in the way of a stock Cardbus designed card and preclude it from
loading properly. There is info as to how to shave the corner of a stock Cardbus
card to allow room for that bump provided by MacDan at:
(http://mywebpages.comcast.net/macdan/). I have done it and it only takes an xacto
knife and a steady hand. But as for the G version of WiFi, I have to expect that they
will clearly be of the official Cardbus design and therefore have a need of shaving
for sure. There will also be the problem of getting drivers for OS 9 (which I expect
you are running.) Most new cards think the world started with OSX. I would recommend
that you settle for B speed in your 3400.

With all this excitement over these cards I jumped in also and might be the only one

everything seemed to work except the darn thing cannot maintain connection for more
than approximately 15 or 20 minutes. (Even when the WAP antenna is within 4 inches of
the Skyline) The card seems to go dead and cannot be detected by the computer. Its
little green lite suddenly flutters on and off and poof you're disconnected. The
signal strength meter goes away and is replaced by an excuse window stating that no
card can be located. The only way to re-establish contact with the card is to reboot.
After that, all is forgiven (for 15 or 20 minutes - that is. Then it starts over
again.) I have downloaded the latest drivers on the web page and it did not seem to
help. The problem is very intermittant and I have not been able to find a specific
action which causes it to happen. It just seems to switch off whenever it chooses.
Does anybody have any ideas? I would like to join those of you in the happy group.

Word sees double

2003-09-07 Thread D. Wakefield (DTP etc!)

I have had Office 2001 installed for quite a while and have been up until recently
generally pleased. I call upon one or more of five Templates which I created
previously as a normal part of daily business. Recently when I looked in the My
Templates area of the Project Gallery, to my surprise there were two of every
template. Each named exactly alike and when opened indistinguishable from each other.
If I go out through the finder, and locate the templates folder inside my Microsoft
folder, you can only see the original 5 template documents. There is no evidence of
the phantom 5 documents which constituted the ten we saw in the program view. I have
even tried creating a new template, saving that as a new name and looking for it with
both methods. It also appears in duplicate in the menu bar method (using Word itself)
and as the expected single entry using the finder method. I would prefer not having
this double vision. Anybody have any ideas as to what is up?

3400 Card Slot ???

2003-08-21 Thread D. Wakefield (DTP etc!)

Could I have someone clear the fog, once and for all, which surrounds Cardbus and
3400's. I have read about the $100+ cage upgrade (which may or may not be
necessary to make it cardbus complient), the cardbus dremel tool slot grinding tip
(which may not work because it doesn't always seat correctly,) type 1, 2, and 3 PCMCIA
cards which are now scarce do to age, and am now suffering cognative dissonance. I
have no idea what really is possible.

Can I get this information in one place at one time?

Can a 3400 utilize: Firewire, USB 1 or preferably 2, and 802.11 by way of its card
slots?

If so, EXACTLY HOW? (as in recommended brands or software versions or the mechanical
enhancements which are required)

Thanks.
