Hi Gary,
Try trashing the Finder preferences (as well as the CP pref.), restart with
extensions off, rebuild desktop, and restart again. See if that helps.

Re: Why won't 280c boot?

2005-08-05 Thread Dana Collins
Hello Paul,
Thank you for the response - I will give it a try. My issue also seems to
include a PRAM battery going out. Would this make the unit "forget" that
there was an HD and OS in place? I can boot up, but if the unit goes to
sleep, it is gone: I have to force reboot, usually to an OS question mark,
reboot again to force recognition of the HD. PRAM battery? OR?

Thank you again,
Dana

Why won't 280c boot?

2005-08-01 Thread Dana Collins
Hi all,

A quick question:
I have a 280c with a SCSI Dock adapter connected to an Apple Mini-Dock; the
SCSI Dock adapter is also connected to a properly terminated external Apple
ROM SCSI CD-ROM drive; inside, Apple OS 8.
I have never gotten this arrangement to boot; holding down the "C" key, all
I get are the chimes of death - doesn't the 280c allow CD booting? I know
SCSI concerns are NOT the issue; but can't figure out what is. Any thoughts?

Thank you,
Dana

Ah, a beauty - my daughter actually had one in "mint" condition that also
went through the Apple PPC upgrade program; had new 56k modem, upped HD, CD
module, two batteries that worked, as much memory as it took, etc.. She sold
it to get an iBook .. Had I known then what I know now, I would have been
the one to buy it off her!

Hi all,
If all this talk about having collections has made you "thirsty" for a few
oldies to bolster your holdings, please contact me off list. I have a few
legacy machines I would be most happy to send anyone's way (no charge save
some help on shipping) at the mere request of such: IIci, IIcx (I think), a
IIvi (yes!), LC II and III, Performa 62xx, SE, etc. Last checked all fully
functional units.

Just a thought,
Thank you,
Dana

(p.s. Of all the units considered vintage, my personal favorites were a
Quadra 840AV in mint condition (subsequently sold), and a Performa/Quadra
638 completely decked out with all the multimedia accoutrements then
available: Video-In card, TV tuner, the rare MPEG codec card, and TV
presentation system - I still own this own)

Re: Disc Image?

2005-04-03 Thread Dana Collins
Hello Dave,
Look in the Utilities folder that is in the Applications folder of the root
HD (or boot HD). There you'll find a utility called "Disk Copy". Its use is
pretty much the same as before, only the file type of the image will be a
".dmg" instead of the former .smi

If you choose "read only" or "CD/DVD Master" (anything but "compressed")
when making your disk image, the resulting images, when used, mount rather
quickly (TR V in about 3" in Jaguar), and yes, the games play much quicker
off the image on the HD than off the CD.
Best regards,
Dana

Yes, it works just the same way as it did before, though I agree that the
next statement is mercurial. Dan, does the CD-ROM drive not work at all?

Though I've never done it, I do know that some recent Macs can boot off Fire

Lha iya khan.

(in price, performance or/and else) than doing nothing or than changing
platform, maka ya tentunya saya sepakat sekali dengan mas Adi bahwa
migrasi ke non windows platform menjadi urgent prioritasnya, itupun
setelah melihat apakah wewenang seperti itu berada di bawah
"kekuasaan" saya.

Hi Peter,
Try throwing away your desktop (Appearance) preferences, and your Finder
preferences. Reboot, then reset your desktop selections. This happens to me
once in an odd while.

Recognition retention, that sort of thing. Still sounds great.

Not odd at all, Dan. Apple bought out eMagic a while ago (about the same
time the 2nd batch of G4s were coming out), including their flagship audio
application "Logic Audio". It is a professional-level digital audio/MIDI
sequencing application in the league of Steinberg's Q-Basis and MOTU's Dig.
Performer (ProTools is still a cut above for audio recording, but comparably
weak in the MIDI area when compared with these three). Emagic always
supported the Mac, though when Apple acquired the company they announced

(though I prefer MOTU), and yes, it is an Apple product.

Re: PowerBook 1400cs & Mac OS 8

2004-04-03 Thread Dana Collins
Hello Joe,
You have the wrong CD for your unit. OS Install CDs will generally come in
two flavors, retail versions (which recognizes all targeted units as
supported, and will install the OS on any of them), and machine-specific
versions, which are shipped with the unit, and are intended to be used only
for the target unit's model type (these CDs have an OS enabler of sorts in
their system folder that, iirc, communicate with the unit's ROM type to
establish recognition). Your CD is expecting a G3 unit - I am surprised that
you get as far as you do in the install process - most of my colleagues that
have tried your route usually receive an error message just after clicking
the install button.

Cast your net out over the swap-list, requesting a retail version of OS 8.1
to buy.
Best regards,
Dana

That "crucial bit of Java" you mentioned must be OS 9 or better. ;-)

3rd choice (gack!) - Norton Utils

Hello Heather,
Just a thought: presuming that you are connecting your external SCSI CD
drive via an HD-30 adapter, do you know for sure that this adapter is
known-to-be-good? Also, on the back of the CD drive itself, the following
pins should be jumpered:
"Parity" - "Term Power" - and 0 and 1 (totalling "3" in binary for your SCSI
ID; but you knew that ;-)
sometimes I have had trouble with a CD drive only to discover that the term
power jumper simply fell off - it's just a thought.

Re: Suggestion...

2003-09-26 Thread Dana Collins
Hi John,
Simply use Apple's "Disk Copy" (ver. 6.3.x - this presumes you're not
thinking of an OS X environment) available at their ftp site:

http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/Eng
lish-North_American/Macintosh/Utilities/Disk_Copy/

launch the app., go to the "Image" menu (in the top task bar), select
"create image from disk" and select your mounted CD as the intended disk.
You'll have a choice to select compressed or uncompressed; imho, compressed
doesn't really save you a lot of room, and mounting that uncompressed image
later on is much faster. After creating the image, leave the image stored on
your HD; click on it to mount its represented CD for future use, and off you
go. If your HD has the room, it's a great way to go - the HD's response will
always be multiple times faster than the fastest CD-ROM could ever hope to
be. Great for games, really great for encyclopedias and such.
An excellent suggestion from Clark.

Dana

 It finally happened to me.
After years of using Macs, I finally got the "Rescued Items from Hard
Disk" folder that can't be erased
It always gives a window with "Items in use", even when I started
 from another disk..

Conversely, try booting up off a System floppy or CD, then trash unwanted
items. Certainly an item "in use" won't be in use by then.
Zapping PRAM comes to mind also.

SounJam MP, iTunes foundational predecessor. My vote - I still use it on OS

Yes. I've always had better luck with downgrading with a fresh scrub of the
HD and a "clean" install. You have an OS 9 HD driver trying to mount an OS 8
system, or, an older system running on a drive "too new" for it.

Just wait a bit. you'll get oodles of help on those things, as it is a
favorite on the list. The 500 series is generally regarded as one of the
best models Apple ever produced. My daughter owned one (a 540c) upgraded

unit;
If I had the chance to recapture a comparable unit, I would take it.

Is that the old disk checkup once used w/ 68XXX machines that would scour
your hard drive (took a while iirc) and then give you a definitive report on
the condiotion of your system and directory? It would stop if it arrived at
something needing to be fixed. Is that it? Had an icon with a Happy Mac with

If this is it - I gots - would be happy to upload it to anyone in need,

Re: battery not charging update...

2003-08-24 Thread Dana Collins
Hi Han,
Congratulations on a resurrected 3400!Now you have two of them. My guess on
that portion of the story was that, in the process of reassembling the
PBook, you successfully reseated a RAM module or powerboard connection. Just
a quick question: are you SURE that the unit IS running off the adapter? A
colleague of mine cited similar symptoms (battery recognized, levels active,
but no lightning bolt), only to find out that the adapter had gone out and
his unit was actually running on and draining the battery. You did say your
home suffered power surges last spring.
Just a thought.
Best regards,
Dana

Now my update:
the screen is now fine! (?) all prior negative symptoms are at present not
there!
I have no idea how this happened, except (I speculate) heat, and the need to
cool down as contributing factors. Is this a collateral symptom of the "Dark
corners" syndrome, Mad Dog?

As a novice powerbook owner, I am lead to believe that pbooks love to tease
their owners, alluding to impending death, only to resusitate themselves,
mocking their owners with a false sense of hope; unlike desktops, where when
they die, you can trust that they are dead!

Hi Dan,
I must admit that was my very first thought as it booted up, and thought
that I would indeed have to wipe out the HD and install 7.5 afresh when I
got back to it. However (see my last post, sent about 15 minutes ago), upon
reboot tonight, the screen is perfectly fine! Hmph! I sent Tom Lee a
speculation about stored heat (what with no opportunity for the screen to
sleep during init/install) that finally registered upon reboot. Shutting
down cooled it off (note: this is a speculation only!). The caveat to our
mutual suspicion would be that to install, I booted UP with a Sys 7.6 CD -
would or wouldn't that count?

Still curious and perplexed myself, all.
Best regards,
Dana

Re: Duo problem-HELP!

2003-08-14 Thread Dana Collins
Greetings, colleagues.
I have a PowerBook Duo symptom/problem; need diagnosis!

I'm prepping a Duo 280 (greyscale) for a swap. As long as I've had it, it
has exhibited zero screen problems. It came to me w/ a patched up version of
Sys 7.5 on it, and the soon-to-be-new owner requested 7.6.
Installation (including disk - reinitializing) went flawlessly; the unit
responded well and boots up fine and peppy and full of spunk - BUT...

suddenly (as in, the very first time I booted up in Sys 7.6 by the HD and
not CD or floppy), the screen is showing curled blacking out in all 4 of the
corners - looks like a piece of paper w/ cinged or charred corners from a
fire that was put out (the center of the screen is still sharp and clear).

What is this? Is there an anomoly of sorts w/ this unit and Sys 7.6? Has the
screen crossed over and begun it's journey into the great beyond? (Does it
happen that quickly, to go from a great screen to the "charred corners"
look?)

I need to let my trader know what's up - if you can provide any info or
advice i would appreciate it. I'm new w/ Duos, so I haven't generated a long
history of experience w/ them.
My thanks in advance.
Best regards,
Dana

Re: Appletalk, or lack of...

2003-07-25 Thread Dana Collins
Hmm.
Let's see if I get this correct:
Use Sherlock to find the file "AppleShare PDS"
Before you press search, use the edit button to select the "invisible"
option, then do your search; you should (in OS 9 at least) get the
indication that one file exists. Drag it to the trash, then press"OK" to the
warning that the Finder can't put it in the trash: it must be deleted
immediately.
Restart (or maybe you don't have to; I sometimes through away the Finder
pref./ also, then rebooted) and try your Chooser->AppleShare connection now.

Hope it helps!
Best regards,
Dana

Right you are, now that I'm paying attention ;-)
I had confused the discussion (Ethertalk) with DHCP server availability
(of which I'm probably wrong also! :-\ )
Best Regards,

P.S. Curious about all the 3rd party utilities (for ex., SuperClock) that
got bought out and implemented by Apple behind the scenes, giving the novice
the impression that it was Apple that had come up with these new features.

Most excellent, and very interesting! You must have quite an HD on your
unit. :-) Digidesign gets very skittish about anything under a 604e @300mhz
for PT free, not to mentional the RAM requirements. Are you using PT Free
5.01 or 3.4 (it's first incarnation)? Certainly a credit to the software,
and to Macs in general, to be able to use it on your machine. It is indeed
one of the most impressive pieces of freeware that I can think of offhand.
To George's specific concern, PT is really not very keen on compression of
any kind, and his audio files would have been fairly humongous.

Dana

LOL! In the "old days", purists would say that .ulaw rules using your specs

> Also, when attaching the sound file to your email, the

If you mean the size of the actual sound file attachment, yes. This has
always been my experience - sometimes, Stuffit's compression isn't
compression at all!

> Best

Craig mentioned SoundApp, which actually does a fairly accurate job at
format conversion, and to its credit gets better and better all the time.
A tad more geeky solution is Tom Erbe's "SoundHack" which offers about 13
different file exchanges with a total of some 52 different compression
schemes (!). The vocoder is to die for!

Quite true; I was under the impression that George's friend had, at least,
sound capability, which on older PCs would mean a sound card would HAVE to
be present (I believe..). Integrated audio on a PC is a fairly new (and not
terribly satisfactory) addition on the consumer market, iirc. I do remember
trying to get an old Zenith 486 to send sound to its "massive" on board
speaker, powered by the equally massive single oscillator pumped with a
giant .45 watts - that was a treat!

If your friend's Windows is really old with really limited multimedia,
another option is to use QT (there's others, but for you this is certainly
readily available) to convert to a MIDI file, which gets played on even old
Media Player apps (WIn 3.1, et. al.) and suffers not at all with
compatibility concerns.
As alluded to, the problem with .wav files is not compatibility per se, but
compression, i.e. lack thereof. Both .wav and .aiff's "native" form is to be
uncompressed.
Just another option.

Dana

Re: Best DAW for Wallstreet (233/160)

2003-06-06 Thread Dana Collins
Hi Stephen,
One very important piece of information to assist in answering your
question. What OS are you running, and hope to be running in the near
future? This is especially timely as the dig. audio prod. industry is
getting more and more poised for major migration to OS X.
Some VST plug-ins aren't ready yet, some are; some have pledged allegiance
to Core Audio (Apple's native audio/MIDI protocol), others (for ex.
Steinberg's ASIO VST driver protocol - a must if you're going to use VST w/
Digidesign hardware) hasn't made the migration, nor is in a hurry to get
there. Let us know :-)
Best regards,
Dana
P.S. I'm fond of MOTU, personally find Cubase simply odd.

Re: midi files on a PB1400

2003-04-06 Thread Dana Collins
Hello All,
While I agree with Kenta that OS 9.1 w/QT 6 is a bit much too ask of a PB
1400 with 48Mg RAM, one thing that I would NOT do is play MIDI files (or any
external clock-dependent function) with virtual memory (that would include
RAM Doubler) on - if OS 9.1 is a definite "must have", then back QT to ver.
4.1.x and turn virtual memory off - see if that helps, Don.

Also, I agree with the SoundApp assessment - very nice utility; I don't use
it regularly (as I have Dig. Performer, Finale, etc.) but it is very hany
for a quick play - use ver. 2.7 and be sure to get the "Drop Decoder" to go
with it - hany plug-in.
Best regards,
Dana

Re: Battery Recond (was Powerbook 3400)

2003-03-22 Thread Dana Collins
Sure wish the Duo batteries could be reconditioned for $54!
eBatts quoted me $76 for reconditioning a Duo battery, and that an
educational quote - actually, this is to recore the battery, if that is the
same as what was referred to as "recondition".

Re: Duo 280c Keyboard

2003-03-22 Thread Dana Collins
Greetings all,
*sigh* my "new" Powerbook (Duo 280c) has developed a condition with its
keyboard.
All of a sudden the 3, 4, e, r, d, and c keys do not function, with all of
them going out today. I presume this means time to look for a new keyboard,
but... does anyone know if the keyboards respond to cleaning at all? Is it
common for the key configuration to be wired in banks (as I suspect is such,
and one of these "banks" went out)?
Let me know when you can.
Best regards,
Dana

Hi Josh,
I'm a new 280c owner myself, but I'll take a stab..
I'm going to bet the answer is "you don't".
There's of course the serial port in the back (for modem/print or, my first
choice, AppleShare) and the modem (RJ-11) if you have it (wouldn't it be
cool if there was a phonenet-like adapter that was RJ-11 to ADB instead of
to DIN 8), but that's it. I'm guessing that your best bet for the project
would be what the colleague mentioned earlier: use a microdock to give you
ADB and floppy- they are much smaller than the Apple Minidock.
Best regards,
Dana

Good to hear about the warranty, Aly -
As mentioned, I'm new to Powerbooks also; veyeran colleagues are consistent
in mentioning the power manager reset button (on the back of the unit), if
that helps you at all. Worst comes to worst, surely eBatts would offer you
even some nominal tech support or advice on using their product?

This is the way I've always done it in OS 9.0.4
Oddly, in OS 9.1, I've had less success at having this little operation
(trashing AppleShare PDF) actually fix this filesharing problem.

Re: Mac OS

Greetings,
A question on this; once downloaded and unstuffed (the 19 parts of OS
7.5.3), is it possible to take the unstuffed parts and burn a working
installer CD? I'm thinking that the issue of using a newer faster Mac to
download the System to use on an older (aka, slower) Mac would not be an
uncommon scenario.
Thank you.

Re: ? on G3 Pismo

2003-02-05 Thread Dana Collins
Greetings all,
I have a question re: a G3 Pismo my student owns. Beautiful unit, but it's
doing something odd.
He kept complaining of an error message that wouldn't allow his Finder to
boot up completely while trying to start up in OS 9.2. Having been newly
bought via a successful eBay sale, I suggested a clean install of the os
just to reduce possibile causes. So, we zeroed out the ATA HD, did a fresh
install of OS 9, (seemed to work fine), and turned oround and added the 9.1
update, followed immediately by a 9.2 update (didn't bother to reboot
inbetween the two updates).
Upon initial boot up in OS 9.2, sure enough the same odd error message,
something about an "OTLib" with an awfully long name (wished I'd written it
down, but I was late for class) was missing and to check the owner's manual
(not present) for info. The only button available to close the window was
"restart" which we did, THEN from each boot from then on, just before
mounting the boot HD, the unit would go into a loop (the HD icon would
appear, then disappear, then appear, etc.) sevral times until the standard
yellow "The Finder needs your attention" message would come up.

My thought at first: does the G3 Pismo need a firmware update to run OS 9.2
(or OS X for that matter) ?

Any help appreciated. The unit inquestion has over 500mg of RAM if that is
of any help.

Thank you for putting up with the long post.
Best regards,
Dana

Battery Recondition question

2003-02-01 Thread Dana Collins
Greetings all,
I have a question re: the following recondition question:
I have a Duo 280c, with a spare Type III NiMH Duo battery that I would like
to recondition in the hopes that it will improve it's recharge performance.
I'm using the old Apple Battery Recondition utility, v. 1.1 as find at the
ftp site.
I boot up with extensions off (OS 8) to run the utility
Here's my question:
when one launches the program, what are the characteristic reactions from
the unit?

When I press "OK" to start the utility, the Duo immediately goes into a
"strobe" mode (screen flashes on/off, cpu seems to pulse, and speaker
crackles) for a few cycles, and then appears to shut itself off - wait, I
checked, it does shut itself off, because I can reboot by simply pressing
the power key.

Is this normal? I've never owned a PBook nor dealt with such issues before,
and I don't want to cause any collateral damage to the unit.
Many thanks for fielding the question.
Best regards,
Dana

Re: Apple Presentation System

2003-01-30 Thread Dana Collins
IN-Focus made (for Apple) and bundled up a breakout-splitter box with a
plentiful amount of cables and Performa-friendly multimedia software, which
Apple called their TV Presentation Syytem. Meant to enhance the Performa
6x00 lineup, it actually works well with any Mac w/ DB 15 monitor hook-up.
One DB-15 cable goes from computer to the In-Focus box (powered by the
included adapter), and the other side of the box splits the signal, going
back to the monitor (DB-15) and to a TV set (either composite or S-VHS). The
end result is simultaneous TV-monitor out, just like any of the AV Macs
(8500, etc.). Very nice, needs no drivers, works out of the box. NOTE: the
only supported resolution is 640x480.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Dana

Re: Newbie basic question

2003-01-28 Thread Dana Collins
Greetings all,
A newbie to the list and to the world of PowerBooks in general.
I have a simple connectivity question:
I have a newly-found Duo 280c in great shape; it has a microdock
(eMachines/SuperMac), floppy adapter, etc.
I also have a good external CD-ROM unit to connect, with the obligatory
HD-30 adapter; the only way I can see to plug this into the 280c is through
a minidock or full dock. Is there any other procedure, or a port I'm not
seeing?

Many thanks in advance.
Best regards,
