Re: Powerbook 170 battery won't charge
Olin asked: My question is this: without fixing the fuse, will the PB170 boot with a fully charged battery (charged with an external charger, as Paul Nelson suggested), or is booting it an impossibility without the power adapter? (I am using a M5652 adapter, the replacement for the faulty M5140 and will most likely dispose of the M5140 adapter). My experience is, no, the PB 170 won't boot even with a fully charged battery. YMMV, as always. That rascally mobo fuse is the devil, eh? don't hesitate to clip off the power plug from the M5140 ac adapter before you put it in the trash. You'll do the karma world a favor... Re: Powerbook 170 battery won't charge
Olin, Bummer, dude. I fear you've been hosed by the infamous M5140 ac adapter. Examine the plug tip and see if the insulation has broken away. Then go to this '95 TidBITS issue and, well, decide what to do. Others on this list have alleged you can replace the faulty fuse if you're not too squeamish about soldering, but the ac adapter is gonna have to go, alas... I also fear that the two new batteries you bought were toast when you got them. Perhaps someone will recommend where to get them rebuilt with new cells. http://www.tidbits.com/tb-issues/TidBITS-269.html Warmest regards, Gary -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... PB 1400 won't charge battery
I have an allegedly fresh battery but the 1400 won't charge it. I've got two M4896 ac adapters (can't find a revision number -- where should I look?) and the symptom is the same with both. The 1400 will start up with the ac adapter connected but the battery symbol in the menu bar has an x through it and the battery level control strip element is greyed out (OS 8.6, Newer 216 MHz G3, 64MB RAM). I installed a new (used) main logic board acquired off of ebay and the symptoms didn't change. Checking the battery with a multimeter shows some voltage but not enough to start up (9V? -- haven't checked lately...). Has anyone had any success in solving a won't charge problem on the 1400? Re: PB 170 ac adapter
I had asked for authoritative information on defective ac adapters which could cause damage to PB 1XX main logic boards. Clark Martin helpfully suggested I could fix the damage if I was willing to do a little soldering. Doing one last google search, I came across an article in a '95 TidBITS. http://www.tidbits.com/tb-issues/TidBITS-269.html Here's the salient info: The original 15-watt AC power adapters shipped with the first models of PowerBook computers have damaged a number of PowerBooks. When the tip of the plug's plastic insulation becomes chipped, inserting it into a PowerBook - even when it's not plugged into an electrical outlet - can short out the PowerBook's internal fuse. Later power adapter models have a reinforced tip that prevents this damage. Apple has announced a customer satisfaction program to replace these original power adapters and any PowerBook fuses or logic boards damaged by this problem. Only the original model M5140 power adapters, manufactured from August 1991 through September 1992, exhibit this problem, and only these will be replaced under the program. The affected adapters have Model M5140 printed on their labels, and were shipped with the PowerBook 100, 140, 145, and 170 models. In PowerBook 100s, damaged fuses can simply be replaced. In the other models, the fuses are not replaceable and the logic boards must be exchanged. Apple will offer free out-of-warranty replacements of the fuse or logic board, as appropriate. Users with these power adapters but without logic board damage may obtain a free replacement power adapter. PowerBook 100 owners will receive a 17-watt adapter, and owners of the other affected PowerBook models will receive a 24-watt adapter. This offer is available only through 29-Sep-95. Apple assures us that the old power adapters are being disposed of in an environmentally sound manner. Bless Google and TidBITS! PB 170 ac adapter
Help! Years ago I learned that one of the original ac adapters (for PB 140-180?) had a flaw that after it got old, it could cause a nonreplaceable fuse on the main logic board to blow, requiring, according to Apple, a logic board replacement. That ac adapter was replaced by an improved model which did not have this flaw. Studying Apple knowledge base article 16168 (the URL is too long to post...), it appears the replacement adapter is model M4662. Does anyone happen to have any authoritative info on this subject? I see there are several ac adapters that were all replaced by M4662 but I don't know, for sure, that all of them had the same problem (iirc it had something to do with a breakdown of the insulation between the positive and negative poles of the plug...). I'm in need of an ac adapter for a PB 170, many of which are available on ebay, but I don't want to buy one that's going to cause me this problem.
