PB190 not booting up from fully charged battery

2001-10-27 Thread M Forrest

I have two fully charged batteries for my PB 190. While I can get my PB 190
to boot up while plugged in via the ac adapter, it refuses to boot up with
either battery. I have reconditioned and fully recharged both batteries,
still, no boot up. PB works fine otherwise.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.
Morgan

Compact Flash reader/writer advice needed

2001-10-18 Thread M Forrest

Well, I was so excited about having lined up a CF card, CF/SM card reader,
and PCMCIA adapter, all for about $30! The adapter arrived yesterday, and
the media card is on its way, and then today I get email from the eBay
seller about the CF/SM card reader that it isn't available. (Which I thought
was illegal to do on eBay--to offer something you don't actually have to
auction???) Anyway, now I have to purchase a reader via another route.

So, while I am researching, I thought I would ask if anyone has any strong
opinions, advice, or experiences about USB readers. Any brand preferences?
Should I go cheap and just get a CF/SM combo reader, or go much more
expensive and get the VST Tri-Media Reader, or something in between?

Thanks for any and all suggestions/info!

Morgan, still trying to make this PB work for me for my November writing
project!

Re: VST Tri-Media Reader and Zips and CF PCMCIA

2001-10-17 Thread M Forrest

Donna suggested:

Did you try reinstalling Netscape? What version are you using?

Can't reinstall it. Don't have it on floppy. And I don't have a floppy drive
hooked up to my iMac to make a floppy version from the CD version I have.
Can't d/l it because I can't get online with a browser to d/l it. Catch-22.

tell your mother-in-law to add an account name to her account (she's
allowed 7 names) that is 7 characters or less. Then try to access THAT new
name which will be useable in that earlier version of AOL

Believe me, I know more about AOL than I care to. Was one of the very first
subscribers years and years and years ago--1991 I think. Already thought of
this option, but my mother-in-law is vacationing and away from a computer
for another month or so (can you believe being offline for that
long??!!!). Anyway, that option will not work right now. Yes, I could
call and get her password, but her user name is also too long. So going the
AOL route is just off the list of possibilities right now.

And no, it's not worth installing AOL on my iMac and calling her for her
account info and me setting up another account on her account while she is
away. That's just a lot of futzing. I think I have a much easier
workaround.

At this point in time, I am just going to wait for the Compact Flash card
and USB CF/SM reader to arrive Just got the PCMCIA CF adaptor today. It
seems to be a far smaller headache than taking the PB directly online at
this point. The CF card and CF/SM reader are due to arrive Thursday or
Friday, Saturday at the latest. So I just have to hold tight until then.
Patience...ugh!

If I want to make the PB capable of being online at some point in time,
updating browsers and such will be far easier via and CF card, I think.

I am a little concerned that the USB CF/SM reader is a reader only and not
also a writer, but I did a little research and it SEEMS that I should be
able to drag and drop over to the reader from my iMac. I am keeping my
fingers crossed, anyway. If not, I'll just sell this reader and get a
reader/writer. I only paid $10 for this one, so I know I can sell it and get
back what I paid for it.

Once I finally get the CF card and reader, I'll report in on how it all
works out just in case someone else on the list is interested.

Thanks,
Morgan

Re: VST Tri-Media Reader and Zips and CF PCMCIA

2001-10-16 Thread M Forrest

Makmac wrote:

No, I didn't mean to imply there was. The reason I have two is because 2 or
3 years ago my business partner needed to hook the SCSI Zip she already had
up to the new non-SCSI iMac, and discovered it was within a few dollars to
purchase a new USB Zip as it was to purchase the SCSI to USB adapter. So,
since I now have two Zips, I can hook the SCSI Zip up to the PB190 and the
USB Zip up to the iMac.

But I have never really liked Zip. Just personal preference.

I would suggest a PCMCIA ethernet card. Then it's just a matter of transferring
from Mac-to-Mac rather than from media-to-Mac-to-media-to-Mac... Plus an
ethernet card can be found for a third of the price you're looking to pay.

Well, my iMac is hardwired into an Xrouter wireless hub for cable modem
access, with an iBook with Airport card also accessing the cable modem. I
was looking into getting a wireless PCMCIA card, but they're about $80. I
wasn't sure how hooking up the PB via ethernet might work with the setup I
already have. I don't really need internet access on the PB.

I spent about $30 on a small (only 8MB) CF card, PCMCIA adapter, and USB
CF/SM reader, so I figure I got a pretty good deal. I won't really be
accessing the PB too much, mostly for an intense writing project in
November.

I decided against the VST Tri-Media Reader when I found the CF/SM reader for
$10 on eBay.

I am trying to make this all as portable and fuss free as possible, which is
why I was looking for a way to get around the Zips. I also think it's a
cheaper way of getting some backup storage for some of my files on my iMac,
since I now have everything I need and the CF cards are really cheap through
one online place I found.

But thanks for the suggestions!

OOOpppsss!!! I realized that I read your comment wrong. While there probably
isn't a special driver for the PB, I don't have a driver on the PB at all,
and the driver that came with it came on a CD, and of course the PB has no
CD. So getting the driver installed will be a small PITA. That's why I opted
for spending an extra $30 to bypass the Zips completely and go the route of
PCMCIA CF card.

Thanks again for your suggestions!

Re: VST Tri-Media Reader and Zips and CF PCMCIA

2001-10-16 Thread M Forrest

I don't love Zips, myself, but I have found all the drivers I have
ever needed on the 'net and downloaded them to get around the CD
 issue.

Well, tonight I tried to get the PB online. It does get online through my
dial-up ISP that I am about to turn off in a few days, but now I can't get
the Netscape browser to work. So there's an old old version of (pooey pooey
I HATE to even say this) AOL (v. 2.7!) that I decided to try. My
mother-in-law has an account that I can access. Well, no go there because
the account name has more letters in it than version 2.7 will allow. So
that's out.

Connecting the Zip has just become WAY too complicated, and now I am glad
that winging their way to me are a CF card, CF PCMCIA adapter, and CF/SM USB
reader for my iMac. Just seems like this is going to be the easiest solution
afterall...glad I found the deals/steals on eBay to make it happen!!!

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Anyone else using the route of CF media with their old PB?

I was thinking of getting one of these, now that the price is down to $99,

PB190 to my iMac. How's the VST Tri-Media working for you? I already have
both a SCSI Zip AND a USB Zip, but I have never really liked Zip drives. I
still have to finagle getting the PB online somehow to d/l the correct Zip
driver for the PB. Seems like the Tri-Media, CF card and PCMCIA adaptor
would be easier, although pricier since I already have the Zip drives. Any
suggestions?

I am sorry to be showing my ignorance here (I am new to the list and just

I just wanted to say that right now on eBay there is a PB G3 WallStreet

off chance it is, or someone else reading this is interested, here's the

Right now there are no bids, and a buy it now price of $10.

Sorry if this is a waste of baud space...

Re: PB G3 Wallstreet Battery Source

2001-10-11 Thread M Forrest

Does anybody know of a good (and cheap) source for a battery for a PB G3
 Wallstreet?

How much is cheap these days?
Here in Japan, they run around $100 - $120 at discount stores.

Local Micro-Center here (Kansas) sells them for $250! So that sounds a lot
 cheaper.

They are all over eBay right now. Highest price at the moment is $75, so I
doubt they go much over $100-$125.

I'm not sure if this link will work:
http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?MfcISAPICommand=GetResultquery=Wal
lstreet+batterycategoryid=ht=1st=0category1=4599maxRecordsPerPage=100S
ortProperty=MetaEndSort

You can also try searching using words besides Wallstreet battery under the
Search only in Computers : Apple, Macintosh category.

Hope this helps.
