Didn't think so since no boxes are lit on the PB
Battery Level Strip even though the power manager
gives up trying to charge the battery.. But I pulled
the charger cord anyway and a popup came on right away
saying in 10 seconds the mac was going down.

Rats. Anyone know how to get these batt cases apart?

3400c Li-Ion Battery?

2005-10-29 Thread Mac
I have one that seemed to have discharged itself and
now won't charge. All 4 green lights come on however.
Is it a gonner or is there a chance to save it?
Wouldn't charge in a dual charger either. It tries to
charge but seems to give up after about 10 seconds.
Same thing happens in the Powerbook.

Thanks

The original product shipped with a terminator so you
probably need it. I may have one but have to look.

3400c startup problem

2005-08-22 Thread Mac
Has anyone seen a 3400c chime on startup, the HD spins
up but all you get is a corrupted display, no startup
icons, no boot? I'm thinking RAM but I know the logic
boards fail alot on these machines. The PRAM was ok 2
weeks ago when it booted up fine. Had a good LION
battery in it all this time. Today I plugged in the
powersupply and it chimed without hitting the on
button so I knew something was up. Just didn't think
it would fail to bootup at all.

Thanks.

No, what we are saying is that you _have_ to plug the

The battery isn't plugged into the logic board. It's
plugged into the power management board. And there

good seat on the motherboard. If still @64 then the
fastest diagnosis would be to try it in another 3400.
If no others close by you might have to eat the
postage to someone that would test it for you.

Yes, I have: wamcom-131-macos9-20030723

Is there another build that works with eBay under

I started an auction tonight (OS 8.6) and could only
get it done with IE (5.1.7). iCab (2.98) couldn't
even get past (load) the category selection page and
Mozilla (1.3.1) couldn't upload a pic. After trying,
Mozilla wouldn't do anything else. Kept saying I was
offline or some nonsence. When I went over to IE,
eBay even remembered the title & description I did
with Mozilla and let me finish from there.

Thanks for the confirmation, Dan.
Maybe that's why I have less issues with eBay and
PayPal on IE & iCab. ie, no Flash.
The only real issue I had and why I originially posted
was Gmail (ActiveX). And Mozilla took care of that.
Yahoo mail is even doable on iCab now although not
perfect. I did try downloading one of the Yahoo iCab
bits for the Filter Manager from Rob's site but it
didn't seem to make any difference. There was an
instruction to go to a yahoo mail URL only once to get
it to work:

<http://us.f528.mail.yahoo.com/ym/BetaSwitcher?&switch=1&src=beta&dest=current&nof=1>

but I didn't understand the logic even though I tried
it. Maybe I didn't have all the identity settings
right but if that was the case I would have thought
that Rob would specify the correct settings if it
mattered.

BTW, do you use the MRJ Beta5(v1.0b5) plug-in for
Mozilla? The Quicktime (v5.02) plug-in?
Any others I should get?

That's the easy part. Not solder city. Pull the
keyboard (3 grey screws on the bottom). Pull the
front grill (1 silver screw). Pull the green battery
off it's sticky tape under the grill. Unplug it's
connector. Reverse to install the new battery.

Do you have another ethernet able mac to connect to to
test it out? Or a local company/school with an
ethernetwork to test it on?

I've seen a desktop Mac where the ethernet was flakey.
Worked for weeks then on a freeze/restart, nothing.
Sometimes took a dozen restarts to bring the ethernet
alive again.

It was worth it. Thanks. It ran gmail ok. I may

OSX on 3400c?

Hi,

What's the consensus (if that is possible) on
upgrading a PB3400c to OSX? A total nightmare or
doable? How much RAM in necessary? Is there a how-to

Kingston PCMCIA Digital Media Adapter Card

2004-07-15 Thread Mac
I just received a Kingston 4 In 1 PC Card adapter
PCMCIA card which allows a PC to read various digital
camera cards (I have Smart Media cards). The
instructions say it needs OS X or OS 9.2.2 to work so
no suprise that my Powerbook running 8.6 couldn't
mount the card onto the desktop although it was
trying. My question: is there a "piece" of OS 9.2.2
that I could install into OS 8.6 that would allow the
card to mount? If not, anyone have a 9.2.2 OS for
sale or trade?

Thanks

Powerbook 5300c Startup Problem

2004-06-23 Thread Mac
My 5300 started acting "PowerManager funny".

The startup button won't start my 5300c Powerbook from
a fully charged battery (I just get a static type
noise). The startup button does work when the charger
is plugged in. The machine will also startup from
just the battery by using the reset button. It also
charges the battery fine. Tried a second charged
battery, no better. Tried the PowerManagerReset
Utility but it didn't fix the problem. Any ideas on
what to try next? Is the Power Manager still
corrupted but the utility can't reset it?

Thanks

The power manager may be corrupted if you are lucky.
Try clearing the PRAM memory.

PB 3400 Power Manager Board?

2003-09-03 Thread Mac
My PB3400 decided to ignore the battery the other day.
Won't boot off a charged battery and if you boot off
the AC and later insert the battery, it recognizes
that the battery was inserted, tries to charge it but
the charge level drops quickly to zero and never gets
any charge. It's not the battery for sure (tried
others and they all work on other Powerbooks). The
PRAM battery is new. Do I need a new PM board?

Thanks

Not sure. Like I said , can't get it to recognize the cd drive even by
itself. I am using an actual terminator, but the zip drive does have a
switch for it. When I hook up the cd drive with it terminated and set at
any id (it's a little pushbutton kind of thing) I get nothing. I'd really
like to get the cd working as it would make updating the OS from 8 much
easier I believe.

5300cs info wanted

2003-08-14 Thread Mac Price

I just found the low end mac site and this group after I dug out the 5300cs
that I had gotten at a garage sale for cheap and wanted to know if there was
anything I could do to upgrade it. From what I've been able to gather, there
really isn't much I can do to it other than a larger HD and more memory, is
that correct?

2003-08-10 Thread Mac Price

I am trying to get the cd rom drive and zip drive that came with this laptop
up and running and am having no luck so far. Here is what I've tried

ZIP by itself as device 5 and terminated: Works!
CD Rom by itself as any device number: Doesn't work :(
ZIP and CD daisy chained with zip first and CD terminated: Doesn't work

5300cs Part II

2003-08-07 Thread Mac Price

OK, I've read over the comments and have a few more questions.

First as much as I can figure out to tell you about it at the moment:

It is a 5300cs (what is the cs for btw? I thought color screen at first, but
then noticed that there was also a c)

It's Running Mac OS 8.0

It has a 750 meg HD (HD Question: It seems I have two different answers
about max size of HD allowed, but it may be more just a question of OS. One
of the people that responded had mentioned putting a 20 gig drive in but I
recall reading that there may be problems with drives larger than 8.2 gigs
on versions lower than 8.6. Is this correct?)

I assume from the 750 meg HD and the fact that it has 48 megs RAM that I
have 16 Megs of Ram onboard and 32 in a Module (which raises my next
question, is another memory upgrade worth the cost as I would be essentially
be paying $103 for 16 megs more memory)

It is running at 100mhz (To the person who had the 5300ce motherboard, how
complicated a swap is that, and what [other than speed] is the difference
between the ce and the cs?)

Bruce mentioned an internal video board replacement that at 8 bucks seems
like a great idea, especially with the 10-base-T Ethernet port. My only
question on that one is: Is this something that I would be able to do on my
own, or should it be handled by someone with more experience (I have a
reasonable amount of experience with upgrading WinTel machines)

To Vicki: Thank you very much for the offer, but I would have to see a
picture to understand what you are talking about when you speak of painting
the plastics white (I am a total n00b at all that is mac)

There are a few different wireless specifications- 802.11a, 802.11b,
and 802.11g are the important ones. 802.11a is pretty much legacy, I
think. 802.11b is the most common, supporting 11Mb. This is probably
what's $30. 802.11g is the new standard- and it's pretty new, I don't
know if the standard has been finalized yet- but it's 55Mb. Well, $30
is a pretty good price, and I think 11Mb is faster than cable (and
indeed faster than the ethernet ports on any of my Macs), so I'd go
for that one- provided it met my other needs. I'd want a NAT (network
address translation) firewall if I didn't already have one, to protect
the computers a bit more.

I don't know about the wireless cards. One neat feature is to be able
to use an external antenna- apparently you can get pretty surprising
range with them.

Whatever you decide, please use the security features of the station.
Unless, of course, you want it to be open...

It isn't cheap, but Starry Night Pro apparently does this, and to a
lesser extent Starry Night Backyard. I gave my mother a version
without the satellite tracking and she enjoyed it (but lost the
license in a hard drive crash! Waah!). There was a version for 68k
macs, I think you'd have to ask them directly.

For MacOS X, a look at freshmeat.net yeilds some interesting results:
something called Celestia has a MacOS X port, and it looks promising,
another project called Satellitarium looks more focused, but it's
based on the X Window System and early beta. SaVi looks pretty
promising, but I couldn't immediately see a MacOS X port. It uses
TCL/TK, so porting might not be bad. Stellarium has a MacOS X port,
but I didn't see anything about artificial satellites... I didn't see
the OpenGL based simulator I was specifically looking for- I wish I
could remember the name.

BTW, beware of Freshmeat! It's addictive...

How about SCSI disk mode pb with a USB drive? I doubt this would
work- the ROM which does the disk mode would have to know about USB,
and I doubt it. If the USB card were bootable, perhaps its ROM could
dance with the Disk Mode ROM and make it work...

Failing this, I think I could make a Linux box that would do it-- it
would require a fair bit of coding, though!

I haven't heard of any SCSI host to USB device adapters. With a 540C,
I'd suggest trying to find one of the SCSI disk mode capable cables,
which would let you mount the entire 540C as a drive on a different
machine.

The network install disk should work for this. It leaves out some of
the standard OS stuff, like printing, so it's a small system. You
should be able to mount appletalk-exported disks on the desktop
though, and format the drive using software stored on the remote
machine.

I have a special disk image on my 540C containing a small system based
on the network install disk, which I use when I feel like booting from
a RAM disk (for extra battery life). It's not pretty, especially
compared to its normal MacOS 8.1, but it is small...

It'll work with 7.5.3, which is available on the ftp.apple.com ftp
site. I'd recommend getting the network install disk and doing the
install over ethertalk or serial appletalk.

Heh. Following up to myself...

One strange thing about my Minix install, no shutdown, halt, or
telinit command-- I don't know how to shut it down cleanly. I just
unmounted the /usr image (sync;sync;sync;umount /dev/hd1) and quit--
the / partition is a ram disk, so it shouldn't matter, but still!

Hmmm... I didn't try killing the kernel... I wonder if that would've
worked.

I tried to get MacMinix on one of my powerbooks, but unfortunately it
doesn't like 32-bit memory addressing! MacOS 7.5 doesn't have a
switch to turn it off, and 7.0 doesn't work on my Duo- so I pulled out
another Duo with 7.1, but decided to look at MiNT. It doesn't seem to
mind 32 bit addressing (woohoo! I can still use more than eight
megs!) and everything else seems to work-- after I got it installed.
The installation script of the version I have had some problems- it
seems to assume that some functions are already there, when they
aren't. It isn't an impossible install, I just had to poke around a
bit. Like Mac-Minix, it doesn't do TCP/IP. GCC is available, as well
as a bunch of other languages (a couple lisps, modula, and others).

I restarted my Duo with MacOS 7.1, set 24-bit addressing and
restarted, and MacMinix seems to do well. It has a much more complete
set of commands (programs) out of the box, and seems nicely Unixy.

MiNT seems to be a better choice than MacMinix, unless you want to
study the OS code-- Minix was designed to be easy to study and
understand, after all. MiNT only seems to be single user.

I bet MacMinix (*) would work. I haven't used it. It's very small--
with source code, 8 floppies-- and you don't even need a hard drive!
I think it runs in a MacOS window, so the video should be handled
automatically. You'll probably want to use vi instead of Emacs, and
I'm not sure if the C compiler is gcc but I think gcc is available.

I might try it out myself on a Duo 250, if I get the time...

Yes, but big SCSI laptop drives are pretty scarce.

(*) What I think I remember about Minix-- it was developed when AT&T
stopped letting colleges use the actual Unix source code for classes.
It was originally designed for early PCs (8088s and up!) and designed
so that students could recompile their systems with two floppies and
no hard drives. The complete source code is in the developer's book,
which I think was called _Introduction to Operating Systems_. BTW,
the developer's name is Andrew Tannenbaum (if I've spelled it
correctly).

It looks as though they even got the X-Window system to work!

The PB170 I had was my first, and so far the only one with an FPU

The drive support information is in Drive Setup's resource fork, and

The internal modem on my 540C is not a full hardware modem; it needs
extra software to run it. (It's a Global Village powerpoint mercury
19.2, I think). Once the extra software is there, I have a choice of
"internal modem" or "modem/printer port" under the Modem control panel
(MacOS 8.1).

The extra software is hard to find on the net, but you'll probably get
lucky if you search the archives (I'd rather not repost somebody
else's URL without prior permission, especially when I don't know if
it's what's needed! :)

Here's what it says on the www.Nisus.com web page:
==
"Nisus Writer 4.1.6 is not compatible with Mac OS 9.1 and above if you
are connected to an AppleTalk or TCP/IP network, or if AppleTalk is
turned on by default on your Mac (AppleTalk is on by default on every
Macintosh). If you are not connected to a network and AppleTalk is on,
the workaround is to make AppleTalk inactive.

"If you need to be connected to an AppleTalk or TCP/IP network, you
will need to download the latest version of Nisus Writer."

I don't know what the problem is, and I don't know if they count a ppp
connection as a TCP/IP connection. (Come to think of it, I don't know
if I do or not...) I wouldn't be *too* surprised if it were a conflict
with the ethernet extension.

If there's a public university or college nearby, you might want to
check their library policies. The library here at the University of
New Mexico says it's available to all New Mexicans, and I think
they've got an ethernet drop in the library now-- I don't know if it's
only supposed to be for students and faculty, but it's worth a try.

My 540c is really handy, and I use the ethernet port on the back a
bunch.

Nisus has a couple of really neat word processors for free (as in
beer*). Nisus Compact seems neat, and is really tiny. Good for
powerbooks! MacOS 9's networking is said to have some trouble with
Nisus Writer 4.something, but it's great in MacOS 7 & 8. In return
for the software, you'll get a Nisus newsletter about once a month.
It's *well* worth it. http://www.nisus.com/

I'd also suggest getting BBedit Lite (sic) from Barebones software--
it's a small text editor with a great search command- multiple files
and regular expressions. It opens those files that are too big for
Simpletext, too. Free as in beer. http://www.barebones.com/

There are a couple of neat statistics packages for the Mac too.
MacAnova is a statistics package that I haven't used much.
http://www.stat.umn.edu/macanova/macanova.home.html It looks pretty
neat, but I'm smitten with XLispStat:
http://www.stat.uiowa.edu/~luke/xls/xlsinfo/xlsinfo.html
It has a version that'll run on Mac Classics! I've done real work
with this package. I can't find the license right now, but I think
it's free (as in speech**). The guy who developed it is big in the
Bayesian statistics field, and it's got some Bayesian capabilities
(for those into that!:)

MacPerl. Probably the most used scripting language around.
http://www.macperl.com/ Free as in speech.

Those are the main free programs I use-- well, there's Cyberdog and
most of the other internet applications too. MacSSH. I don't use
VNC, but it's free.

Microsoft Office. One of the most irritating things I've used-- It
kept doing screwy things with my thesis-- wrapping the old text around
inserted paragraphs (and the dancing paperclip) pushed me into using
LaTex on SunOS. Not free (as in Chris Tresco***).

Are you using (the old, not the Darwin OS X) BootX? Put "single" in the
options box and it should boot into single user (non-X) mode. Putting
something like "3" might also do it by booting into run-level 3,
which by tradition is standard except without the X Desktop Manager
graphical login. (Pretty much everything configurable in Unix is done
by tradition and consensus, so it's got a very good chance of working,
unless you added something to, say, rc.local or similar).

My 540c is nutty for not loading the ethernet extension if it isn't

What's the error? Was the ethernet driver loaded at startup?

You also might try just turning appletalk off, or even disabling the

Somewhere around the Appleshare 3.8 series Apple changed the way the
default password encryption works. With the older versions, you'd need
a special file for dealing with the default DHX method, but the newer
ones have built-in support. My 540C isn't here, so I can't see what
version of Appleshare it's running, but it does support DHX and
randnum encryption without any extra files. Have you tried updating
the 190 to 3.8.8? I think it may lose the ability to save the
passwords between sessions but it should work.

Or, if you can find a file called something like "DHX UAM" or
something about a Diffie-Helmann exchange UAM, create the folder that
it's complaining about not finding ("Appleshare UAM" under extensions?
I don't remember what messages I got) and put it in there. It should
work, but I couldn't find a copy through google when I looked.

The UAMs let you send passwords across the network in different formats.
I'm going to assume that you want to use DHX, because that seems to be
the new Apple default. Well, there's a mechanism whereby you can add
different little subprograms into a folder, and they'll handle the
authentification. Until a couple of releases ago, DHX needed one of these
modules but now it's been rolled into the main Appleshare release.

I bet if you installed either 3.8.8 client from
ftp://ftp.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/English-North_American/Macintosh/Networking-Communications/AppleShare_Client/
it would work.

Re: Powerbook 520 batteries not charging

2002-08-20 Thread mac

I know of a couple of things that could be the problem.
The first is, a bad battery. Emmpathy (yes, two 'm's) would
likely be able to tell you if that's the problem.
Also, the power supplies that plug into these machines have
two circuits, one for running and the other for charging. I
have a semi-broken power supply that will run the machine but
not charge it.

The OS and other stuff shouldn't affect it. After all, they charge
when the machine isn't running.

I've got a 8.1 540c with a GV powerport mercury, and I've been having
the same symptoms. I've found that if I click "connect" again after
getting the "in use" notice, I get a different error message-- this
one about not getting the correct response from the modem- "please
check connections." Oh yeah-- it's not too difficult to check what
kind of modem it is, if you're careful and have a #8 torx screwdriver.
The modem card is underneath the memory expansion card, which is
underneath the middle metal cage underneath the keyboard. Two screws,
a bit of fiddling, and you're there. Mine was marked on the top.

I've tried the express modem software recommended by the person with
the swell name (Dana, but not me) but my startup freezes on the
express modem extension. I looked around a bit on the web, and
apparently my mercury is a software modem, meaning that it uses the
540c processor to handle the regular modem tasks-- so it needs pretty
specific software to run it. Global Village Fax Center 2.5.5, I
think. It'll probably slow programs down a bit.

I have an external modem that works, but it would be nice to be
able to use the internal modem once in a while-- even at 19.?k.

When I got a SCSI compactflash reader, it came with special software
and an extension to deal with the cards. I don't recollect exactly,
but I think it was needed because of some partitioning-- DOS and Macs
using different drive partitioning schemes. Does File Exchange handle
FAT (file allocation table) juggling?

I just did a quick google search-- there's a utility to create and
mount FAT partitioned disks on the Mac called "DOS Mounter" but it
costs $60. They (softarch.com) do specifically mention camera
compactflash, and they have a demo version.

It only seems to need about 3 megs of RAM, and seems fine to me. It

Re: 5300 and digital photography

2002-05-03 Thread mac

I've been using a Kodak DC3400 for a little while now, and it has a
regular Mac-type serial port. Unfortunately for me, the software
provided needs a powerpc- so I got a scsi compact flash reader.

They have them in the reconditioned department of the Kodak online
store for $250, as well as a 1.0Mpixel for $150-- the DC215 also
speaks Mac serial.

It looks like the DC5000 can also use a serial port, and it looks a
little more rugged than the 3400-- I'd go for that one.

Another option is to get a compact flash based camera and use a pcmcia
adapter-- the 5300 has pcmcia, doesn't it? They're about $10.

Re: BIOS? and Mac?

2002-05-02 Thread mac

I don't have any experience with dynamically repartioning, I've always
just either backed up and reinstalled, or thrown another hard drive in.

I haven't tried Gentoo, but I've tried a number of other
distributions.
SuSE: weird instabilities with a recent X86 distro (2.4 kernel 7.1?)
on a couple of machines. I feel a bit burned.
Mandrake: Freshest big PPC version out. An older version had a
misconfigured log-rotate that created a *bunch* of tiny
files... (I actually ran out of ext2fs inodes!) The new
X86 distribution (8.2) is very pretty, and on my home PC
and a disk server I just built. X86 at least comes with
   OpenOffice, which is nice.
linuxppc: I tried installing on a couple of G3 powerbooks (Pismo and
Lombard?). Both times the video wasn't yet supported.
That was a year or so ago the last time.
In my opinion, just about the most trouble-free distro I've used-- for
any architecture-- has been Yellow Dog. I've put it on one of my
personal work computers, a dedicated dvd-ram writing box, a log server
(a 4400 that's been up nearly a year-- one process shows about a month's
cpu time!) and one of the powerbooks mentioned above.
It's really a sweet distribution. http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/

There was a slashdot thread when Mandrake's PPC version came out a
few days ago: http://slashdot.org/apple/02/04/23/1532254.shtml

To boot from a cd, press the 'c' key while booting.

Other people have responded well, especially with regard to old macs.
However, starting with the G3 machines (I think) more of the startup
functions were left to the operating system. To allow for this, a new
layer was added, called "open firmware." This seems to me to be the
closest analog to a x86 BIOS. The machines with this layer are called
"new world" as opposed to "old world" machines. I'm almost certain
that all G? *books are new world, and older ppc ones are old world.
Nubus macs, I believe, are not called old world, but are similar.

This is just my understanding gained when installing Linux and
MacOnLinux on a couple of machines.

I don't think you have too many choices... It looks like MkLinux would
be your best bet. LinuxPPC and PPC netBSD both require openfirmware, not
present on the early Powermacs. You could also run MacMinix on top of
Mac OS, I believe, but MkLinux is much more powerful. It looks like
MachTen would also supports the 5300, but it isn't free in either sense.
I used MkLinux on a PM7100 a few years ago-- I don't remember how much
memory it had but I don't think it was more than 64 Megs, and it ran
fine. At that point, support for expansion cards and such was pretty
poor, but that might not be a concern for a laptop.
