It was the only option offered at igo.com. I would have picked anything
else...

Ah, the joys of ordering from Canada...

I'd always wanted to open it... It helps that I had -only- paid about
300$ two
years ago for it. At the original price, I'd have been more weary...
As for the broken part, it still has two of the 3 clips, should be ok.

I got it from "igo.com". for 14.95$ Got stung by UPS and the broker
charges though
(to canada). The ordering process was ok, but I never got the "we
shipped the
product" email after the original confirmation... oh well...

BTW: Powerbook is still in pieces (haven't had a chance to get back to
it), I'll try
the chopsticks method to reconnect the video cable to the motherboard...

Powerbook is now completely in pieces. Nice view!

The problem I have is connecting the video ribon thingy to
the slot on the motherboard. Because of the metal part of
the chassis, I can't reach it well enough to push it in the
slot. I can't remove any more pieces.

I guess I just have to fiddle some more.

Thanks for all who helped.

I still got a piece of it that I can glue back on.

Yeah, I do see the brown board/white connector part. The thing I don't
see is the actual connection between the ribon and the brown board.

I had that off from the beginning. On the right of that section though
is
a grey plastic part that covers the connection between the brown board
and the ribon.

How can I see if the connection between the board and the ribon is ok?

I got the microphone section cover off (breaking off two of the plastic
clasps...).
Popped-off the bullet and reseated the ribon connector to the right of
the mic.
The ribon is nicely rolled on the silver metal hinge. The thing I can't
see is the
other end of it. it goes down, in the powerbook, but I can't see it
connecting to the
motherboard. There is a grey plastic thing blocking the view (around the
hinge).

Should I take out the bottom of the powerbook to go in that way?

I see the white connector. It does not seem to budge. when I try to
move it, or push on it. Also, I don't see a ribon connected to it.
It has a brown plate on it that is glued to grey plastic from the top
section.

You say I should remove the right hinge, what exactly is that.
The only piece I removed aside from the keyboard is the front
plastic thing underneath the microphone part. I tried removing
the bullet things but I did not want to break them.

On a good note, the powerbook now boots with only the
batteries inside! Yeah! PRAM install seems good.

I'm slightly dislexic myself, so I could read you alright!

I opened it up, found the floppy ribon disconnected. I connected it to
the free connector next to it.. This didn't cure the video problem...
hehe.
Just getting ahead on future ones...

I don't have the take-apart manual or a motherboard layout diagram,
where does the
video ribon connect to the motherboard?

Thanks

I'm inside the thing now, but I don't see -any- ribon cable behind the
plastic thing
that you take out underneath the microphone. Is it similar to the one
that I can
see connects the keyboard and floppy?

Is it supposed to be directly in the middle?

Thanks

Thanks for the expedious reply.

I'm about to re-open the PB. This is my first experience with
open powerbooks.

What do you mean by reseat? Is it the plug at the end of the
ribon that needs to be re-connected, or is it just a re-disposition
of the cable inside the case, as to not have it scrunched up?

Thanks

PB540c reassembly woes

2001-08-27 Thread Mathieu Roy

Hi there,

I just replaced the PRAM battery on my PB540c, but I must have
done something wrong as I now have a non-functionnal powerbook.

The upgrade seemed to go well (no extra pieces after the job!).

I reset the power manager before pluging the AC adapter back in
for the first time.

It boots, but with no startup chime. I can hear the powerbook starting up
until it (probably) gets to the desktop. The thing is, the screen is all
black.
I get zero video.

I tried reaching the "about this mac box blindly", but I don't seem to
be "catching it".
Other attempts to click on stuff were in vain.

I'm ready to open it up again, but I don't see what I could look for or
try.

Anyone with a guess?

BTW: I don't have an external monitor to try it on.

Thanks

Matvei
