NiMH packs can be rebuilt since their cells have standard sizes
usually. A friend of mine pointed me to a Hobby shop that sells NiMH
cells a while back. http://www.towerhobbies.com/ The site is aimed
at people who are into stuff like RC cars and such.

2006-02-04 Thread Matthew S. Carpenter

Hi,

Has anyone here every managed to send pictures via the infrared port
from a PowerBook 3400 to a Kodak digital picture kiosk at a photo lab?
I know of a nearby store with one that has Infrared capability for
tranfering from camera phones and I'm really curiouse about whether I
could do this with my PowerBook...and just how I would do it.

Reading a burned 700MB capacity CD R on a PowerBook 3400

2006-02-03 Thread Matthew S. Carpenter

Hi,

I have some stuff I burned to 650MB CD Rs and those disks read fine in
the 6x drive I got with my PB3400

However I have not been able to use 700MB capacity CD R's to make disks
for use in the 3400's CD ROM drive. I've tried Fujifilm, Verbatim, and TDK.

I'm aware that there are also 12x and 20x CD ROM drives that work in the
3400's expantion bay and was wondering: are either the 12x or 20x drives
capable of reading files burned to 700MB capacity CD Rs? I'm guessing
that the 6x one just can't handle it and wondered if maybe the 12x or
20x used a little newer hardware that might be more compatible?

Files get bloated copying to 3400c

2006-01-31 Thread Matthew S. Carpenter

Hi,

I'm not really sure which list this should go in. I have an odd problem
with my PB 3400c.

I currently have it runing OS 9.1 with an Orinoco wireless card.. .hard
drive is 40GB, 144MB of RAM, VM is dissabled:

I copy a folder that is just over 100MB from my G4 to the PB3400 over
Apple talk and wireless and it turns into almost 1GB on the PB3400

I make a stuffit file on the G4 of the just over 100MB folder. the
stuffit file is approx 14.1MB

I copy the stuffit file to the PB3400 where it turns into 15MB

I decompress it and it turns into almost 1GB

I delete the decompressed folder and restart with the orinoco card
ejected and the extentions manager set to OS 9.1 Base + Stuffit engine

I decompress it and it still turns into almost 1GB.

I have seen this happen a few times on this computer now and It's really
leaving me apsolutly frustrated. I've never seen this happen before
having this PB3400c but it seems to happen everytime I try to copy a
fairly large folder from the G4 to the PB3400c.

Then out of curiousity I hit the keyboard command for duplicate and the
copy the folder from the PB3400 to the PB3400...the copy dialog says
it's copying a 104MB file folder (which is the correct size) but in the
end the final output is another 906.9GB folder.

Anybody know what's going on?

Cleaning a display?

2006-01-31 Thread Matthew S. Carpenter
Hey... the longer I have this PowerBook 3400 the more things I notice I
want to change. Anyway... there's some dirt on the screen that the
duster didn't get off and I was wondering what substances you clean an
LCD screen on a PowerBook with without damaging it.

better charge than the 3400c batteries.

I actually found a seller on ebay who is listing unused unopened
batteries for the 3400 and 3500 powerbooks with $7.99 BINs (s/h is
another $7..you might be able to work something out if you get more than
one though you'd want to contact the seller before taking the BIN). If
you do a search on PowerBook 3400 Battery in the next 20 hours you
should get one of these auctions at the top of your search.

The following is something I remember from asking a friend of mine.

Anyway... the charge held depends on the mAh rating on the battery...
the higher it is the longer the battery will go... I don't know the
rating on Apple's battery(as far as I can tell it's not listed anywhere
on it)

Lithium Ion Batteries are what shipped with the 3400. They don't
develope memories and start holding lesser charges real quick...but they
do eventually stop working once they've been used a lot.

NiMH batteries can be used in the 3400 but they develope memories if you
don't let them drain all the way before recharging They also can't
be used for as many charge/drain cycles as Lithium Ion batteries but
they do have one advantage At least with older hardware where new
batteries are hard to find... from what I'm told: typically it is
possible to break open NiMH battery packs and rebuild them with new
cells Lithium Ion batteries use custom cells that aren't easily
replaced.

I've found both types for the 3400 through frooglewww.froogle.com...
though no where near as cheap as those ones I found on ebay.(but I
should mention that most of the ones I found through froogle apear to
have a much better warranty)... if you look on froogle make sure you're
buying the main battery pack and not the pram batteryand always note
the type and the mAh before getting deceved by what looks like a good price.

Orinoco 7.2 drivers

2006-01-26 Thread Matthew S. Carpenter

Hi,

I'm trying to find a copy of the Orinoco 7.2 drivers so I can take my
PowerBook 3400 on my wireles network. It seems that the company that
made them has made it almost impossible to find them for download.

I looked it up on versiontracker.com.. the download link is old and
doesn't work.. it's the same one linked in this article:

http://www.penmachine.com/techie/airport1400.html

On versiontracker someone posted a link to what is supposed to be where
it is downloadable, but stuffit on the powerbook chokes on it.

http://www.sst23.com/orinoco.smi.zip

I tried decompresing it on my G4 running OS X and then copying the file
to my PowerBook but then attempting to run the smi file the PowerBook
gives me an error. I havn't been able to find any other sites on Google
except for more dead download links.

If anyone can help me get the Orinoco 7.2 drivers so I can get my
powerbook online wirelessly, it'd be really appreciated.

Thank you,

-Matt

Bent pin in PCMCIA slot on 3400

Hi,

I have a problem. I need to be able to use both pcmcia slots on my 3400
at a time... but I just found out that the lower one has a bent pin in
it... and I'm not really sure how to get into the pcmcia slots to bend
it back.

I have replaced the hard drive in this comptuer so I know how to
dissasemble it to a point.. but I do not know how to get the sheilding
off the pcmcia slots so I can get in there to attempt to bend the pin back.

Newbie 3400c question

2006-01-21 Thread Matthew S. Carpenter

Hi,

I have never owned a PowerBook(or any laptop) before so I'm totally new
to this. Anyway seeing as I can only have the floppy drive or the CD
ROM drive in at a time are they hot-swappable or do I have to turn
the 3400 off before I change between them? I havn't been able to find
anything to tell me this for sure(I'm probably not putting the right
keywords into google).

thank you.

PowerBook 3400 Hard drive compatibility

2006-01-18 Thread Matthew S. Carpenter

Hi,

I just bought my first PowerBook... it's a PowerBook 3400 and I'd like
to replace the 2GB drive with something bigger sometime in the next
month or two I was thinking 40GB...probably overkill...but that's
never stopped me before. :-)

Would this Seagate be likely to work?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148085

If that isn't going to work... would you know of any 40GB drives that
would and could be bought new rather than used?...I'm trying to find one
that has lower power consumption.

Also, on LEM's page for the 3400 it says that anything bigger than 3GB
will preclude the SCSI disk mode that just means I can't use PB as a
hard drive on a desktop computer and doesn't mean I can't hook up
external disk drives if I use an internal drive bigger than 3GB right?

Thank you.
