Now we need a printer

2002-07-03 Thread Nancy Butts

Hi all,

Now that my niece's 540c is on the way, I'm looking for a reliable
color serial printer for her, such as an Apple Stylewriter 2400 or
2500. I've just started researching prices via eBay auctions. What
should I expect to pay?

Thanks again,

Nancy Butts

Re: Need recommendation for niece's 1st Pbook

2002-07-01 Thread Nancy Butts

Thanks to everyone who shared their experience and advice in response
to my request for help; I appreciate it a great deal. Since I've
owned an embarrassing number of Powerbooks myself (170, 190, Duo
280c, Duo 2300, 520, a 2400 and now a Tibook), I knew a lot of the
pros and cons, but felt I could use some fresh outside perspectives.
After all, what I might like or need in a Powerbook isn't necessarily
what a 10-year-old novice would need, and there are advantages and
disadvantages to each model. All the input you gave me helped clarify
the decision.

I tried to filter all this info to my Windows sister, and ultimately
she decided to go with a 540c. The active matrix color screen,
full-size keyboard, built-in floppy, and plethora of ports swayed
her, but cost was also a big consideration. We found one with a new
PRAM battery, and since my niece will run the computer primarily off
AC, the status of the two used batteries isn't an issue. The fact
that it's 68k doesn't bother her, as I have a lot of vintage software
she can use, and she's not worried about future upgradeability. (Ha!
She sees this as a temporary foray into the Mac world. Little does
she realize that she will probably be converted.)

A big thanks again to everyone who helped.

Need recommendation for niece's 1st Powerbook

2002-06-30 Thread Nancy Butts

Hi everyone,

I need some advice from all you Mac wizards. My sister, who has never
used a Mac in her life, has commissioned me to buy a used Powerbook
for her eleven-year-old daughter. Her requirements are simple:

1) Cost $100 or less
2) Simple and reliable
3) Can run some version of PowerPoint

Internet connectivity is not an issue (my sister allows supervised
Net access only via her PC with cable modem). So what Powerbook would
you recommend? What version of the OS?

My niece loves to do two things: write, and play with PowerPoint.
I've got every word processor known to man, so I thought I could
install WordPerfect, which is free, and an old copy of Word 5.1 that
I no longer use. These would integrate smoothly with Windows-versions
on my sister's PC, so my niece could copy a file to a PC-formatted
floppy and print via the PC.

What I don't know about is PowerPoint. I don't know anything about
its version history and compatibility with various versions of the
Mac OS-and I don't know where to get my hands on a vintage version.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Nancy Butts

Update on 170 modem

2001-08-27 Thread Nancy Butts

Hi all,

Well, I don't want to bother anyone on the list further because I
downloaded an updated driver from Global Village and voila, the modem
dials out! Now I need to contact my ISP to get instructions no how to
configure ConfigPPP and MacTCP to successfully log into my account.

Thanks,

Nancy

Re: 170 modem

2001-08-27 Thread Nancy Butts

Marshall,

Thanks for the response. Yes, there is a jack on the back of the
Powerbook, and I had already set it for internal modem via the
Portable control panel. But still when I try to configure the modem
to dial out via ConfigPPP, all it sees is the external modem port.
Any ideas?

Thanks,

Nancy

Pbook 170 modem

2001-08-26 Thread Nancy Butts

Hi all,

I was lucky enough to find a nice 170 4/40 on eBay last week for just
$26! It arrived Thursday and I'm delighted with it-the keyboard has a
nice touch, the trackball is far more responsive than a trackpad, and
I love the crisp active matrix display. I feel that I got a real
bargain.

I do have two questions though. The previous owner left Global
Village fax software on the computer, and according to the specs I
found at LowEndMac, the 170 should come with an internal modem. At
least I thought it should. But there doesn't seem to be one.
ConfigPPP and ZTerm only "see" the external modem port. Am I wrong
about the internal modem?

Second, MacWrite 5.0 is installed, but whenever I try to load it, it
opens up a blank window and the cursor spins endlessly. System 7.0.1
in installed with the tuneup. Does anyone have any ideas what the
problem could be?

Thanks for any help.

Nancy

Sources for 170s/180s?

2001-08-19 Thread Nancy Butts

Hi,

I'm new to this list. I sold my Duo a few months ago, but I guess the
LowEndMac bug still infects me, because now I'm interested in finding
a 170 or 180 to play with. Is there any source other than eBay that
you would recommend?

Thanks,

Nancy
