Wi-fi card driver for OS 8.1?
Thanks for the replies about Wi-Fi and OS 8.1. It appears that the older drivers for Lucent/Orinoco PC cards are no longer available on Proxim's website--they only show version 7.2 which apparently requires OS 8.6 or later. Does anyone have the older driver they could e-mail to me as an attachment to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'd be grateful. Thanks, Spence -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... PB 1400, OS 8.1 and Wi-fi
I know that the subject of Wi-fi cards has been discussed quite a bit. Does anyone have a list of what cards do not (or DO) have drivers available that will work with OS 8.1? I've heard that Macwireless cards have drivers compatible, but are there others? My understanding is that the popular Lucent/Orinoco cards require OS 9 or higher. PB 1400 intermittent SCSI problem
I have a SCSI Zip drive and an external HD that sometimes my PB 1400 can see and sometimes can't. They're not daisy chained together--I only use one at a time. PB 1400 battery voltage
I have 3 batteries for my PB 1400CS which I seldom use anymore. This morning I charged all three using my VST charger. Using my voltmeter, one battery measured 10.7 volts, one measured 10.9 volts and one measured 11.7. I've removed the hard drive from the PB and I'm using a CF card. Also, I have a Sonnet G3 processor installed in the PB. I powered up the PB a few minutes ago using the best of the 3 batteries, the one that measured 11.7 volts. After 3 minutes, I got the you're running on reserve power warning, suggesting I connect to AC. Only 7 minutes later, I was told there was no more reserve power and that the system would be shut down in 10 seconds--which it did. All together, 10 minutes of use, including 1 minute to boot up. Two questions: what is the normal voltage for a fresh battery pack and how much running time should I expect from a fresh battery pack with the setup I have? Re: compact flash memory as virtual memory
Message-Id: [EMAIL PROTECTED] From: Anand Keathley [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: compact flash memory as virtual memory Date: Mon, 1 Aug 2005 17:27:45 -0700 So, I was reading this article about using compact flash memory as virtual memory. http://www.lowendmac.com/macdan/02/1114dk.html It seemed helpful as my sister has a Ti Book with only 256 MB RAM and a battery that runs down quickly. It seems that using a CF card could be a solution to both problems. But I've never done this before so could use some advice. Has anyone had experience with this? Any suggestions as to how to go about it? Which card to use? What to look out for or be careful with? Thanks for your time, I use a Viking 512 CF card with my PB 1400. I have OS 8.1 installed on it and it replaces the hard drive on my machine. Although I haven't physically removed the HD, some do for weight considerations. I have an extra battery in the peripherals bay--no floppy or CD-ROM drive--to reduce the frequency of having to spin down the HD as the machine looks for a floppy or CD-ROM drive from time to time. I have OS 9.1 installed on the HD in case I ever need to use it and I store some archived installation and document files there as well. It's very simple to use really. Once formatted, it acts like any other volume. And, it does conserve battery power. If I had it to do over again, I'd probably buy a 1 gig CF card for the extra storage capacity. BTW, the Viking card was replaced under warranty once, but it was a relatively hassle-free experience. Spence -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Networking question -- OT?
If this question is off-topic, perhaps someone can direct me to a group that's appropriate. It involves the wired networking of my 3 computers, one of which is a PB 1400. When I first got ADSL, Earthlink required the use of MacPoet, software which seemingly conflicted with most of what I was using. A router eliminated the need for MacPoet and also allowed me to connect my Macs with ethernet and also provided a print server so that I could share my postscript Laserprinter. So, I was forced into my first adventure in networking with an Asante 3004LC router that didn't connect me to the internet until I bought software (IPNetTuner) that changed the MTU (I think that's maximum throughput). Asante blamed it on Earthlink, but anyhow the software cost me almost as much as the router. But, it worked pretty well for 2-3 years. The next problem was the modem provided by Earthlink died, so less than a year ago we bought a new one from Earthlink--a Netopia. This new modem does not require MacPoet, but now I have three computers and would like to have the same set up as before. I did a little research and decided on an SMC router. Last night I attempted to set up the system and of course, the router can't find the modem. The SMC tech said it was because the modem has a private IP address and said to contact Earthlink and find out how to change the modem to Bridge Mode so that the IP address would become public. I did this and still no dice. Any suggestions would be appreciated. BTW, should I still need to use IPNetTuner to change the MTU? Any security issues in using Bridge Mode? I was thinking of installing Cyberdog on my PB 180 (OS 7.1), but when I went to the Apple download website, the Read Me info starts with this: Name: Cyberdog Version: 1.2.1 Released: February 27, 1997 Requires: US System 7.5.3 or later running on a Power Macintosh with at least 16 MB of RAM, OpenDoc 1.1 or later, and MacTCP 2.0.4 or later or Open Transport 1.1 or later. Re: dead serial port on a PB 1400
Thanks for the suggestions, Brian. I'll check for loose connections, but I think for now I'll just live without having a serial port. It's not a big deal since I rarely print anything anyway. The machine is networked with another Mac, so if it gets to be a problem I can print across the network. And if that's not convenient, I can always buy a main board off eBay as you suggested. It's likely impossible, or at least very very unlikely to be cost-effective. It's not like the serial stuff is on a easily-replaced card or anything. Is it possible that something has pulled the serial port connector loose from the mainboard (did it ever get dropped and land on the serial cable while plugged in, or something similar?) That might be repairable pretty easily yourself; soldering some components or leads back onto the mainboard but once again having it done at a shop would likely be too expensive to be worth it. And mainboards can be tricky to work on, they are multilayer and not simple. You can get a replacement mainboard for about $25-35 on ebay pretty handily, and if you are using a G3 card it doesn't even matter which model mainboard you get (as far as I recall). Without a G3 card you might want one of the slightly faster versions etc. This is what I'd consider your best option, with greatest chance of success and minimal cash outlay. Re: using PCMCIA CF card on a PB 1400 (JeffW)
I'd like to emulate JeffW and get a 256MB PCMCIA CF card for my G3 accelerated PB 1400 in order to increase battery time (using older batteries). One of the PCMCIA slots is currently being used by a modem/network card. A couple of things are not clear to me as I'm pretty ignorant about Compact Flash, etc. First, are there preferred manufacturers and sellers of such cards, and do I need any sort of adapter? Is there a particular type that will work in a PB 1400? A type that won't work? Is a driver involved? Also, would I need to reinstall the OS onto the CF card or can I simply drag the system folder to the card volume and then trash the one on the HD? I have OS 8.1 on one partition and OS 9.1 on the other partition. 8.1 seems a little more sprightly to me, so that's the one I usually use. (any benefits to using 9.1 over 8.1?--I bought it to use with a OS 9.1 or better application that I no longer use) Finally, great tip on removing the CD drive, JeffW! Thanks, Spence in Los Angeles ---snip Well, I don''t know about the 8MB, but I am running a G3 accelerated using OS 9 and my system folder and VM are loaded on a 256MB CF card. I've only been running this for a couple of weeks but so far it is fast, stable and quiet. I also have my main software on a second CF card so I only access the HD at startup or to save at the end of a day. My main goal was extended battery life and on an old battery that was giving about 10 minutes when using the HD, I'm now getting about 30 minutes from the same battery. I have two new batteries that I'm charging right now and I'm anxious to see so long they last with this arrangement. JeffW. P.S. I did remove the CD drive before starting up. Re: PB 1400 OS 9.1 installation tip
--snip-- Spence, just curious how much RAM do you have in that 1400? I have 48 MB in mine and when I tried to install 9.1 it didn't work. Mine is also running the stock 133mHz processor, not a G3. -Andy --snip-- I've got the max--64megs of RAM. But I think your problem is that OS 9.1 requires a minimum of a G3 processor (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Spence -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... PB 1400 OS 9.1 installation tip
Since I don't have much to contribute to this great list, I thought this tidbit might help someone. I successfully installed OS 9.1 (iMac CD from OWC) this weekend on my PB 1400 with Sonnet G3 CPU. It's installed on a second partition (OS 8.1 is still on the first). I was having trouble getting the installer to work until I held down the shift key while booting up from the CD install disk. Then everything went as it should. I know that holding down the shift key while booting up disables extensions, but if you're booting up from a CD I don't know what difference that should make! But it did. I also replaced the old Startup Disk control panel with version 9.2.1. That was a recommendation of someone on this list. Spence -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... PB 1400 to control a radio receiver?
I'd like to use my PB 1400 to control a shortwave radio receiver--namely a JRC NRD-525. The radio connects to a PC with an RS-232c connector. I have tried using my SCSI/Dock adapter with the RS-232c, but the receiver doesn't show up as a SCSI device in the Apple System Profiler. Also, when using Zterm to try to talk to the radio, it only looks for serial port devices. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. OS 9.1 on a PB 1400?
For the past two years, my 1400 has been happily running OS 8.1 with a Sonnet G3 upgrade. Now I'm thinking about going to OS 9.1, which is required by a new application I'm thinking about getting. Would appreciate advice on whether to install 9.1 on a second partition and leave 8.1 as is. I'm concerned that some of my older applications may not like 9.1, but on the other hand, I've heard it's not good to have two operating systems on the same Mac. Any do's or don't regarding installing 9.1? Thanks, Spence -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... OS 8.1 and 9.1 on the same PB 1400?
--snip What I would strongly advise against is partitioning a drive as I did: (1.) 8.6, and (2.) 9.1 with the semi-automatic 9.1 HD driver update - I thought at the time that it could be a mistake. Now it seems the HD is quite sick. George PS: just what options do you use in HD SC? --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] exulted: Thanks, for the advice. I got to that step after alot of fumbling around, trying to remember all the thyings I've forgotten about this type of thing. It's back on OS 8.1 now, and running without any problems whatsoever. When I installed OS 9, I watched it, and did see the installer updating the drivers, so that shouldn't have been the problem. I also did use HDSC before going back to OS 8, and it didn't seem to make the difference. Oh well, alls well that ends well, Brian --snip I've been happily running OS 8.1 on my PB 1400 with a Sonnet G3 for the past couple of years. Now, I'm considering buying and installing OS 9.1. I'm interested in possibly purchasing a software application that won't work on OS 8.1, but I'm afraid that some of the applications I'm currently using might not like OS 9.1. I missed the first part of the thread above and I'm wondering if having both Operating Systems on my PB (using a second partition) might give me problems or just flat out not work? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Spence P.S. I love this little powerbook! -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Mac serial ports equivalent to a PC?
I was thinking of buying my wife a postage meter that automatically calculates postage via a download through a serial port. All of our family computers are Macs and of course have serial ports. However, I suspect that this manufacturer--like too many--has never heard of Macs and the serial port he's refering to is on a PC. On my PB 1400, I have Virtual PC installed, so it'll run Windows 95. I'm wondering if a download would work using the serial port on the Mac. Anyone have any info about this? Thanks, Spence -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... OS 8.1 save RAM disk contents
On my PB 1400, with OS 8.1, I use a RAM disk for Web browser caching and I noticed that in the Memory control panel I can check a box to have the contents of the RAM disk saved on shutdown. We're running OS 8.6 on my wife's Mac and the Memory control panel on it doesn't allow that RAM disk save option. Seems like a nice feature. Anyone know why it was left out of OS 8.6? 1400cs vs 1400c screens
I thought I posted this already, but it hasn't shown up on the list, so here goes: Those of you who have swapped a passive 1400 screen for an active one, is the difference that radical? Re: Battery Woes
Check the archives. Seems to me I read in the recent past that the problem could be with the PowerBook's AC/battery charger and the solution was to replace the unit that came with the 1400 with another one made for G3s (or the iMac yo-yo?). I have an app called My Battery says it is fully charged and I should get 4 hours but I only get about 45min. if I'm lucky. There is freeware call EpsonShare that will allow you to get access to your printer through your girlfriend's Mac. It works on ethernet but I don't know about appletalk.
