email through my PC

2005-07-05 Thread colin hodder
Okay, seeing that I'm still having trouble getting my PB170 to let me use it
for email, I was wondering if there is anyway that I could simply transfer
emails back and furth between my PC and my mac using either floppies or
stargate. All I want is to be able to upload the email messages to my mac
in the morning, answer them on the move throughout the day and then transfer
them back to the PC to be sent. The version of Eudora I have is I believe
2.something (I'm not home right now, so I can't check). I'm using OS 7.0.1
if that matters. Thanks for any help.

Internet on my PB170

2005-07-04 Thread colin hodder
Okay, I started to use my PB170 as my primary computer last summer and was
trying to get it set up for email. However, I took it out one day when it
was wet outside (I had it covered in plastic) but some water must have
gotten in because I tried to start it everyday for a couple of weeks but all
I got was the chime of death. I figured my fascination with Macs was over
forever. Anyway, I started my PB170 a few weeks back and it worked fine.
I've been using it everyday since with no problems at all, so now I think
I'm ready to try to get it online.
However, I didn't have any luck last summer with MACTCP and configPPP
despite the fact that one member here sent me the exact specifications he
used to get the internet on his 170 with that software. So, I was wondering
if I had any other options for getting online. Also, is it possible to get
online with the 170 over cable internet (I'm guessing no).
Also, if someone could tell me where to get the PC version of StarGate I
need that too (Bob C. sent it to me, but my Mac broke before I had a reason
to put it on my PC). Thanks in advance.

Keeping in mind that I am very computer illiterate, how does that work? Are
SCSI ethernet devices common? Does it require a lot of difficult computer
voodoo to get that working? Thanks.

It is possible. I have a couple of SCSI-Ethernet devices
that plug into the SCSI port that I have used to access
my network. It is OK for email (Claris Emailer1.4) but is
slow as the 7 year itch for any sort of browsing.

One last try: PB 170 online

2004-09-30 Thread colin hodder
Okay, I know I'm being very naggy over this, but I really want to get eudora
up and running on my PB 170. I went into my mac terminal folder and plugged
into a phone line and pretended I was connecting for a fax. The computer
made all kinds of Modem type noises and then the nice robot lady operator
came on and I could hear what she was saying, so I assume I have some kind
of modem. Now, bare in mind that I am computer illiterate, but does this
mean I have some kind of modem good for connecting for the purposes of
Eudora, or is there a such thing as a fax only modem that I can't use for
anything else. I am asking this because I have set up Mac TCP and PPP to
the fullest extent of my abilities but the Open button in configure PPP
always stays greyed out. If anyone has any suggestions at all on what I
might be forgetting then feel free to make them. Thanks.

modem trouble

2004-09-28 Thread colin hodder
Okay, I'm positive that my 170 is supposed to have a modem. It came with
all kinds of wacky modem stuff on it. However, I don't think it is working.
I have set up MACTCP and PPP to the best of my ability, but when I go into
PPP the thing always says PPP down and I can't click open or anything
else. Might a faulty modem cause this problem. Also, is there anywhere on
the computer where I can look to see what kind of a modem I should have, or
at least to make it make some noise to show f it is still responding at all.
 Thanks.

PB 170 again

2004-09-26 Thread colin hodder
Hey, I was wondering if there is any way that I can make my 170 send or
recieve stuff from my pentium 166 or my girlfriends pentium 3. Also, does
anyone know of a place where I can get any legal copies of claris works and
BBedit?
As well, I have a copy of virtual memory on my PB. However, it is described
as a disk copy image file and when I click on it, it tells me to insert a
disk. When I insert the disk, it tells me it cannot use a disk. Anyone
know what's wrong here? Thanks for any help.

Eudora on 170

2004-09-24 Thread colin hodder
Hey,
I've been wondering if it's still possible to use Eudora on a mac as old
as my powerbook 170? I found all the programs for it on a bunch of
different sites, but they mostly seem out of date. My 170 only has 4MB of
RAM and is still running system 7.0.1 (until I get the time to put all 19
disks of system 7.5.3 on it). It has whatever the standard modem was for
these things.

few more 170 questions

2004-09-03 Thread colin hodder
I have all of the 19 disks for system 7.5.3 now. So, do I just put them
into the computer and open them and go ahead? Or is there something else I
have to do first? I am currently running system 7.0.1.
Also, is it possible to get RAM charger for free somewhere online? I think
it could really help my poor computer deal with it's four MB of RAM. And
speaking of RAM is there some kind of special RAM I would have to get for my
powerbook (different than PC RAM I mean) to get it up to 8MBs. I live in
the least MAC friendly city in the world (St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada).
I haven't found one MAC certified dealer here at all, no second hand stores
selling MACs, and my powerbook is probably one of the only MACs in the whole
city (there can't be more than 100). So anything that can't be bought from
PC dealers or downloaded off the net is pretty much out of my range.
Thanks for any help.
Colin (the computer illiterate).

Powerbook 170

2004-08-29 Thread colin hodder
Okay, here's the thing. I emailed this message already, and got one
response sent directly to me. However, I just found out that hotmail was
sending almost all the messages from this list into my junk mail and that
every reply before a couple of days ago was deleted. So, I've fixed the
problem and I'm sending the message again in case anyone offered a reply
before and it didn't make it to me before. If you emailed me before and
your name is not Bob C. then I did not get the message. Thanks.
Previous message:
Hey, I just got a Powerbook 170 for five dollars at a flea market. It has

the internet that need to be opened using stuffit expander. My powerbook
won't recognize anything that needs to be opened this way and I can't get
it to recognize any versions of stuffit I've downloaded. I am downloading
on my office pentium something point something and have a free version of
transmac installed to transfer to the old powerbook. However, the only way
I can get anything from the office computer to the little mac is by using
three and a half disks. I'm not exactly a master of the high tech, so lets

Apparently I got an email from someone named Erwin that seemed to include
just what I needed. However, that is one of the ones that got junked so if
it's not too much trouble I would appriciate it if he sent it again. I'm
sorry I can't email him directly but because his reply was junked and I only
learned about it from Ben I don't know where to email him directly. Sorry.
