You might take a look at Nisus Compact ( http://www.nisus.com/free/

Word 5.1 is compatible with newer things, in fact if you get the free
plugins from Microsoft it will read the newest Mac and PC versions.

Explain?

You can download and install the "Microsoft Word 97, 98, and 2000
Converter for the Macintosh" which allows MS Word 5/6 to read Word
97/98/2000 files, which also means that it will read almost all files
created by Word 2001/2003/2004/etc., too.

To find the file, go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads and search
for "word 5.1".

Looks like you need driver software. You might give CD SpeedTools a

Alsoft makes a nifty little $30 utility called "PlusMaker" which can
convert your drive without reformatting. I've used it on several drives.

However, while I've never had a problem with PlusMaker, be sure to backup

Re: Thoughts on presentation options for PB 1400

2004-03-21 Thread JosephC22
I have the same configuration, except that I have only 40 MB RAM. I've
used it several times for presentations, and I've only come across a
couple of issues:

1) As you already pointed out, make sure that you have an appropriate
adapter, e.g. Mac-to-VGA. Some older projectors include traditional Mac
connectors, as well. We have an older InFocus model in the office which
has a Mac cable.

2) Make sure the projector natively supports the resolution at which you
would like to display, e.g. 800 x 600 (SVGA) or 832 x 624. Otherwise you
will get ugly scaling effects when you try to display the image. XGA
should also be fine.

3) It is usually worth it to buy the brightest projector (measured in
lumens) you can afford. If you try to use an underpowered projector in a
bright room, you'd be better off using a flip chart or a chalk board!

4) Always, always, always try to practice your presentation in the same
room in which you will give the presentation, using the same equipment
(computer, projector, network, etc.) and the same lighting that will be
in use during the real presentation. Sometimes colors which look great on
a computer monitor will look too light or too dark on a projector.
Conference organizers usually set aside time to allow speakers to do
this -- if they don't, try to arrange an on-site practice session before
the conference.

Outside of that, it should work like a charm. Good luck!

As I once discovered after spending far too much time trying to do so,
the PowerBook 1400 models do not boot from cd-rom when holding the "C"
key.

The original post was correct: to boot a 1400 from the cd-rom, press
"cmd-opt-shift-delete" instead. Admittedly, not one of Apple's shining
moments of user interface clarity. For those who are curious, there are
some interesting variations on the "cmd-opt-shift-delete" theme at
http://www.artsci.wustl.edu/ASCC/documentation/mackeys.html

I hope your mailbox isn't getting swamped with messages from 1400 users
who were similarly affected. ;-)

>It sounds like you have a progressive extension conflict. Try opening with
>extensions off. Boot with the shift key (only) down, then come back and
>report what happened.

Booting with the shift key will ignore the cd-rom drive entirely, since
the OS won't be able to load the CD driver. However, this does suggest an
interesting approach: on the off-chance that it is a driver problem, some
third party cd-rom software ships with programs that can load a cd driver
after booting. If the problem is not a seriously mis-aligned laser (which
is my personal bet), maybe a different driver would work. Intech's
SpeedTools can be loaded after booting with extensions turned off, and a
downloadable demo is available ( http://www.speedtools.com/CDDemo.html ).
FWB CD-ROM Toolkit might also do the same, but I'm not sure.

Re: I'm growing sick with my old pb 1400

Most likely problem - the laser in your CD-ROM drive is out of focus.

If so, you have a couple of options:

1) You can try to re-focus the laser. You can find instructions with
pictures towards the bottom of this website -
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/gionpeters//pb1400.htm

2) Buy a replacement cd-rom. They are cheap on eBay, and many used mac
vendors will supply them as well. Also, there is a reasonably common 24x
Teac mechanism found in some PC laptops which can be adapted for use in
the 1400 (google search for "powerbook 1400 teac" for more info).

2004-01-26 Thread JosephC22
With the right versions of software, the Duo 270c and 280c can be
excellent choices for extremely portable word processing and email -- and
with color displays, too!

You can still find memory cards to bring the 270c up to 24 MB or the 280c
to 40 MB, which will let you run System 7.1, MS Word 5.1, PowerPoint 3 or
4, Excel 4, and Claris Emailer with surprisingly good performance.
Needless to say (almost), word processors like WriteNow or Nisus Compact
are even better in the performance department.

While the built-in modem is a little slow, you can add an external modem
or add a duo dock for SCSI, ethernet, and an external monitor.

Re: Boot crash OS 8.6

2004-01-21 Thread JosephC22
The DragLib function is actually built into the MacOS 8.6 System file, so
it sounds like the problem is coming from an old extension that is
explicitly trying to open the old DragLib file. Look for extensions circa
1990-1993 and disable them one by one until you find the culprit.

By the way, does your mac boot okay if you start with extensions off? (To
check this, hold down the shift key while restarting - the startup screen
should say "Extensions Off".)

Another approach would be to open the Extensions Manager control panel
and select "MacOS Only" and reboot. Old Apple extensions and non-Apple
extensions would be moved to the "Extensions (Disabled)" folder in the
System Folder. Then you can try adding them back to the extensions folder
one by one (or a couple at a time) and rebooting to find the culprit.

Finally, if you can find a copy of Conflict Catcher, that might be a very
big help.

You'll need developer release 3 or newer to run on the 1400. However, I'd
hesitate before installing on the 1400. 64 MB of RAM is a bit low,
especially if you want to install newer software. Also, even with DR3 or
newer, you still have to jump through hoops to get a successful
installation, and, if I remember correctly, ethernet still isn't
supported on the 1400 under linux. See the following for more info:
http://lppcfom.sourceforge.net/fom-serve/cache/1.html
http://lppcfom.sourceforge.net/fom-serve/cache/106.html
http://www.mklinux.org

Unless you're a serious hardware hacker, if you want to experiment with
linux on the mac, you'd probably get more satisfaction trying it on a
cheap 8500 or a powerbook 3400.

v 1.1 works like a champ on my 1400 w/44 MB real RAM (Ram Doubled to 88
MB). Depending how much RAM you have on the 1400, you might want to run
OS 8.6 instead. There is a patch on the net which will let iTunes 1.1 run
under 8.6. You can search the archives of this list for more info.

Re: 1400 & a Sonnet G3 400Mhz Upgrade

2003-11-25 Thread JosephC22
Hi Jonathan,

Search for "iTunes 1.1" at
http://www.info.apple.com/support/downloads.html
Version 1.0 should also be there.

Interestingly, there is a pretty simple patch that lets iTunes 1.1 run on
MacOS 8.6 -- it works well as a foreground app on my OS 8.6 1400 (G3
upgraded, 44 MB RAM), but it stutters a little when I try to listen and
load web pages at the same time. Search google for "8.6 itunes hack" for
more info...

Re: 1400 & a Sonnet G3 400Mhz Upgrade

2003-11-24 Thread JosephC22
Hi Jonathan,

If you upgrade the drive on your 1400 to something larger than four
gigabytes, do not connect the 1400 to your G4 in SCSI Disk Mode (aka HD
Target Mode). Pre-G3 Powerbook models have a hardware ROM bug which can
cause loss of data when using a drive larger than 4 GB in this mode., so
stick with ethernet.

See http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn/tn1116.html for more info.

Re: Dayna Communicard Ethernet Adapter Software?

2003-09-05 Thread JosephC22
I did a little digging, and you can download the drivers from Intel.
Intel bought Dayna (or maybe it was Intel bought MHz who bought Dayna? I
dunno...).

Anyway, Intel's Communicard page is at
http://www.intel.com/support/dayna/ccmactrb.htm

and you can download the drivers by following the navigating the download
links on the above page or by going directly to
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/proc/T8Clearance.asp?url=/648/en
g/cc23mac.hqx&agr=N&ProductID=440

I applaud Intel for maintaining a fairly complete support site (
http://www.intel.com/support/dayna/ ) for the full line of acquired Dayna
products, even though they have long since stopped selling them.

Cheers,
Joe

Re: PB 1400 question

2003-08-01 Thread JosephC22
The plastic screen was standard on the 1400, along with a few preprinted
inserts. Since they were on PowerBooks, Apple called them "BookCovers".
The 1400s shipped with eps and ClarisWorks templates so that you could
make your own BookCovers (the templates might also be part of OS 7.5.3;
look in the Apple Extras folder).

Re: linux on a powerbook ?

2003-07-08 Thread JosephC22
1) See the FAQ at http://lppcfom.sourceforge.net/fom-serve/cache/350.html
for hints on partial support of the 1400 by MkLinux.

2) See http://nubus-pmac.sourceforge.net/ for info on efforts to port
linuxppc to the NuBus architecture, including the 1400.

3) If I remember correctly, ethernet support was spotty at best: you
pretty mch had to have one of the built-in cards, as PMCIA/PC cards were
not supported. Unless you're experienced with linux at a fairly deep
level, you might be better off selling the 1400 and buying a cheap
Lombard G3 or a 3400 instead.

4)Tenon Intersystems developed a very cool implementation of BSD as a
MacOS application called Power MachTen. Essentially, the complete unix
system runs as a MacOS app, and it supports the usual assortment of open
source software (e.g. Apache, Perl), X Windows, etc. I used to run it all
the time on my 44 MB PB 1400 under MacOS 8.6, and the performance was
pretty decent. Tenon is closing it out at $99. See
http://www.tenon.com/closeout_order.shtml

I haven't had that problem. Battery Recondition 1.5 and SimpleText 1.4,
and HyperCard 2.2 work reliably for me (PB 1400cs/upgraded to G3, MacOS
8.6, 44 MB RAM doubled to 88 using RamDoubler 9.0.1).

Were you running SpeedDoubler 8.1.2? It was much more reliable than some
of the earlier versions...

When I've run into problems on my PowerBook, it's usually been because
some legacy program insists on installing an older version of an
extension on my system. Believe it or not, I started seeing a bunch of
crashes recently, and I discovered that something had installed a MacOS
7.something version of the Network control panel on my v8.6 system! You
might want to try running with Conflict Catcher 8 or newer (you can
download a fully functional demo from http://www.casadyg.com/ ) or
installing a clean system.

Best regards,
Joe

For IE, I doubt that you'll see any real improvement. The older ppc chip
is just not fast enough to render all of the graphic elements and page
layouts that we find in web pages today. If you set up IE so that it
doesn't load images, you'll see an improvement.

At worst, SpeedDoubler won't hurt, and you can always de-install it.
While it is true that it is less useful with later versions of
MacOS/applications (especially since more of these later programs are PPC
native), I find that the Speed Copy function is still substantially
faster than the OS routines, especially when copying files over a
network, but even when copying on the same system. The "Copy Agent"
feature is also great for performing lightweight backups. If you try it,
be sure to use v8.1.2.

Again, yes, unless you have graphics turned off.

In general, 8.1 has BIG performance benefits over 8.0 (e.g. compare the
speeds of opening windows in a list view in 8.1 vs 8.0).

Likewise, 8.6 tends to have better stability than 8.5, but with
comparable resource requirements, so I almost always upgrade 8.5 systems
to 8.6. Also, many third party vendors only support their software on 8.6
or greater.

Re: Best OS for 5300

2003-03-23 Thread JosephC22
Regarding RAM Doubler and Speed Doubler --

For RAM Doubler, be sure to check out the FAQ at
http://www.connectix.com/support/library.html for a lot of good info.
Here is an excerpt:

...Apple's Virtual Memory always requires the use of hard disk space to
extend memory (1 MB for every MB of physical RAM, plus 1 MB), where as
RAM Doubler does not...Since RAM Doubler does not require the use of hard
disk space, this can mean power savings for iBook and PowerBook users.
Virtual Memory must
access the hard drive to function, which means higher power consumption.
RAM
Doubler only uses the hard drive when absolutely necessary. This means
your
hard drive will be allowed to spin down more often, reducing power
consumption
and thus extending use when operating on battery power...

For Speed Doubler, I think it's great, but be aware that it will not work
with OS 9. I have a PB 1400 (upgraded to G3 cpu and 44 MB RAM), and the
performance difference with Speed Doubler is noticable, hence I stay w/
OS 8.6.

As for the OS, you'll probably be happiest with 8.1 on a 5300, provided
you have enough RAM. For performance reasons, I'd stay away from 8.6 on a
5300 unless you need it in order to run key applications.
