If you send the computer by national post (USPS, Post Canada, etcetera)
and fill out the appropriate customs declaration completely, you will
have no problem.

A bit to add. If you use USPS, they have a thick book behind the
counter which lists customs regs for each and every country around the
world. It specifically lays out what can and cannot be sent to the
country in question. The easiest way is just to drop by there and with
your question. You don't want to send something and end up having it
opened by customs and never seen again.

I just searched the USPS web site and they have a page that has some
limited information. You still want to rely on the detailed regs at the
Post Office.

OK, Gang. Looking for a little guidance here.
Just "inherited" a G3 Wallstreet 233 no L2 cache. Read: client bought
new 17" G4 PB...a shock to her system, I must say...! She felt less
than a connection with her old trusty workhorse, and it ended up in
the dustbin, along with all its attachments. Those attachments
include: zip drive & CD (both internal modules) external modem (56k)
USB PCM/CIA card & Microsoft USB mouse, travel bag (brand new...!).

So, it was sort of a good package, and I couldn't think of it being
carted off to the dump. Now, I have another client whose daughter has
been awarded a scholarship to University, starting this fall. I would
like to give this to her as I know her folks can't afford to get her
a computer for school. (She has worked out a plan to lease time on a
schoolmate's computer, plus use the school's computers as much as she
could. Enterprising young thing!)

Currently it runs OS9 perfectly adequate, but I'd like to speed
things up to run OSX.
I also want to add an internal modem & wireless card. I have sourced
the modem, but I need some advice on two things.

1) What wireless card would be the best choice for this box
2) Would installing the L2 cache card be enough of a boost or can
I/should I upgrade to a higher mhz?

The pb is pretty much mint, apart from these things.

Any help would be appreciated.

Subject: should I get a G3 Kanga, 1400 or 2400?
I'm in a dilemma. I'm planning on purchasing another older PowerBook to
go alongside my two 190s, but I'm torn between the Kanga, 1400 and
2400.
I like the appearance of the Kanga, but price is an issue and I also
need something fairly small, if possible. I'd also like to be able to
upgrade to a DVD-ROM or at least a CD-R drive, if possible. Which one
is
best?

Caleb

As owner or ex-owner of all 3 models, I say: Go with the Kanga! Forget
about the price difference! It's worth it!
My 250 MHz Kanga was as fast as my upgraded 333 MHz 1400c, with much
better sound, faster CD drives and higher RAM ceiling. Plus, you can
have a USB card if needed. And lots of other advantages. Go Kanga!
Best regards,
macnifico

I'm pretty sure this is just another problem with the stupid EMM, but
I tried both EMMpathy and Apple's Intelligent Battery Recondition. The

I have the bare bones version of the PowerBook 1400c (117mhz/750mb, no cd,
system 7.6.2) and was looking into souping it up to make it usuable for light
web, email, and word processing. I have a couple of questions:

1) is it worth upgrading to a G3 Sonnet processor?
2) Any ideas on good email and web surfing program(s) that actually work? I'm
currently running Netscape 4, but it crashes repeatedly.
3) Is it worth upgrading the memory? I currently am running VM on a 256 mb
flash card. Is this a viable solution?
4) Should I assume that it is pointless to upgrade the system software without
upgrading the hardware?
5) Where can I find a cd-rom module?
6) Is all the above worth it?

I really love the old machine and would hate to dump it.

Any ideas, comments and/or cost estimates will be most appreciated. Thanks!

Exactly. The fuser(I think it's a roller) was coated. You cannot get
the crud off once it fused to it. You have to replace the fuser roller
and that's the $250 part. so...it doesn't really pay to print on the
back of paper you have already used, unless your printer is really
designed to do that. My new printer, HP1012 says you can print on the
back by turning the paper over, but I'm not sure I would do that
regularly based on my past experience. However, it is conceivable that
the fuser and paper path relationship is different (it's 12 years newer
in design). I have no way of knowing.Duplex printers are designed to
print double-sided, so I expect they are designed to avoid the fuser
problem. But they are quite expensive. If I needed to do a lot of
2-sided printing regularly, I would look for a duplex laser printer and
shell out the big bucks. D

On Sunday, April 11, 2004, at 03:32 PM, PowerBooks wrote:
I think she means, "don't reuse your paper". When you print on the
back side, with laser toner already present on the other side, it will
melt off and cover the fuser with crud over time. If you can get it
off, www.fixyourownprinter.com might have info, but I think you have to
get a new fuser at that point. For sure, don't try and scrape it off
:)

Specialty papers often have a top and bottom "side" since the "top" has
clay or other substances present to make it very smooth. But for
regular laser paper stock that's not an issue.

2004-01-29 Thread Don Wakefield
I have been looking at a new HP Laserjet 1300 printer
and have a few questions which the salesman was unable
to answer. I bet there is someone on the list who can
answer them for me, so please offer your
recommendations.

1)
There are 2 models of the 1300, one with ethernet
built in, which is $200 more expensive than the other.
There are external "print server" boxes which sell for
$50 and feed the parallel signal to the printer while
offering an ethernet socket to the network. Do you
think the "overhead" of the "server box" would be
noticable to a typical "moderate" user like myself? (I
have so many places I could put the $150 difference in
cost, assuming that I could live with the results.)

2)
The model states it uses the HP language to "emulate"
Postscript 2. I only have experience with the
Laserwriter II, which to my understanding uses the
original Postscript. Will the emulater truely be
faithful to a "licensed Postscrip chip" results and
will the overhead questions of emulation noticably bog
down the process?

I welcome your recommendations.

2003-02-22 Thread RaceCivicR
Not to get all defensive, but I need to at least throw a little weight this
way. First off, I've got a rather good grasp of electronics. Not only do I
have an electrolysis machine I built from scratch in my back yard utilizing
the power of a 12V battery to generate just over a pulsed 100,000V signal (I
guess this would qualify more as a chemistry project, but a bit of electrical
to it) but I've also saved and repaired over 60 Macintoshes (desktop and
laptops) in my time ranging from numerous problems. I also convert cars from
OBD1 to OBD2 (and obd0 to obd1 or 2) which in some cases means making my own
harness and adapting sensors to work with the new system (sometimes adapting
the signal to fit the new demands).

Now, don't get me wrong. It's been a long time since I've been in electronics
(do have a degree in it) so some of the stuff does slip my mind from time to
time. And the 170 I wasted is in fact my fault. But only because my numbers
were off and I figured the tolerances from the 170 were more than they were.
I figured that this 170 would draw much more power than it actually did (hard
drive running, backlight to max and charging a battery). What I mean by this
is the pack I have is a 12V system now running at 10V. And when your able to
pull more current than available, voltage falls (figured 8-8.5 would be more
than safe for the 170). But In fact without paying attention it wasn't
pulling as much current as I thought and because of this, voltage did not
drop and it took the full 10V load (hope that makes sense).

And as far as the tongue deal, I've already learned the consequences of that
in my younger days because I tried a 9V zap (which is quite enjoyable) and
strait 120v (actual here is 112 on an average) which wasn't so pleasant
(couldn't taste anything for a day). The occasional 120V zap to the body
isn't to bad and can be fun from time to time. But do watch those ignition
coils, those deliver a punch, lol. And no, I don't run around zapping myself
for fun. It just happens to me more often because I hate having to run and
turn off circuit breakers just so I can test some leads. And even if I do get
zapped, it's no biggy to me (if the first 100 or so times doesn't do
anything, more isn't gonna be any worse). And with cars, it's somewhat
unavoidable when testing the ignition system since it has to be running to
test.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote...>

I don't want to clog this list with a lengthy tutorial on electricity, but I
also

want to save you from trashing any more Powerbooks. It's my occupation to
educate,

so here goes one last try (sorry, listers; I can't help it!).

You're confused about several fundamental concepts, but let's just look at
one.

Yes, if you have two power supplies, each, say, 12V, but rated for different

maximum currents, the same load connected to each will in fact draw the same

current. That's what you probably meant by devices drawing what they will.
That's

because the current drawn by an element is a function of the voltage you apply

across it (as in ohm's law, which applies to resistors), not of the label
printed

on the side of the power supply indicating its maximum current capability. All

absolutely true, and all *absolutely irrelevant* to why you (probably) fried
your

Powerbook. Unlike this example, you *didn't* apply the rated voltage. You in
fact

applied a much *bigger* voltage. That's a different situation altogether. And

then your Powerbook stopped working after a bit. No surprise there.

It's okay not to have a very good grasp of electrical fundamentals (nobody
knows

everything, and electronics sure is more complicated than a lot of other

subjects), but it's less ok that you think you understand much more than you

actually do (to the point that you want to debate about it). Please think
about

why it is that power supplies come in a variety of voltages. It has to do
with the

fact that electrical devices in fact don't "know" what the "right" current is
for

them. Do think about that the next time you risk blowing up a perfectly fine

Powerbook. :-( And please don't test out your theories by comparing the buzz
you

get on your tongue with a 9V battery, versus what you get with 120V line
power!

Tyler,

I'm not sure I understood from your post ...

Do the MacWireless drivers support the Lucent/Orinoco cards? Or just the MacWireless
card? Is it just a relabeled Lucent/Orinoco card?

okay

i opened my control panel (using 7.1.1) clicked on 040 cache control panel
it said enable for more power disable for more compatability i was having
probs installing software so i disabled i went to reboot and i accidentally
instead of command control power i hit the command power keys it brought
this wierd terminal thing so i hit the right keys and it rebooted then
though i get a message that 7.1.1 is not supported on this machine and i
need a later os that is i figure mabe i should re-initialize the hard disk
it failed i tried again it worked so i try reinstalling 7.1.1 it fails all
the time
it says my hard disk may be damaged i know now nothing was caused by the 040
cache (except the old message at startup about 7.1.1 being too old to run on
this machine which is gone now) but now i have a new problem explained above

why can i not install mac os why does it keep sayin my hard disk is
damaged

Ok I'm showing my lack of PowerBook savvy here, but what is the PowerBook enabler, and
where can I find it? Also when you get an out of memory error while running an app(mp3
ripper) how can I free up memory. I'm running a 5300cs.

My PB 170 is having problems accessing the hard drive. It'll
start up and get the diskette image with a (?).
Once in a while after many start ups it will start normally and
access the hard drive and OS. Could the hard drive be damaged. Is it likely the hard
drive? Could it something else? A pram
battery?

Also, I just got a PB 180 from e bay the other day. I read something about not
suppose to use the PB 170 2.0 watt AC adapter
for the PB 180 (3.0 watts). Anyone know about this?

Also I have 5 extra old batteries. If the recharger or the PB can't detect them much
less recharge them does that mean they're totally dead?

Thanks for the marvelous answer. But here is my
followup: I leave the 2 batteries in my 540c in all
the time while I am using the machine at home on the
power adapter. The abtteries hardly ever discharge; in
fact, I thought I was doing right by keeping them
fully charged up. Do you mean, below, that I ought to
take the batteries out when it is plugged in?

2002-10-05 Thread alan_oneil

ok guys, last one, i promise. i was reading around some
fritter forums (the thread is "classic question from
first-time poster") and came across some stuff about
the iisi (and similar mobos like LCII, CC, etc) having
something in its rom about being able to boot via a
network. (my response: WTF?!?!)
anyways, if anyone has ANY info about this, please
email off-list. i have a performa 400 (remarketed LCII)
and if it would be so cool to have it silently boot off
my iici in another room... no disks or anything (maybe
shove its contents minus HD&FD into a monitor that has
some space left over...)
anyways, if this is anything ANYBODY has any useful
information about ie how to bless a sysfol on a mounted
server volume and make it "the startup disk"...
or maybe an applescript routine to boot a minimal 7
from a floppy, then transfer to the net volume,
ejecting the floppy

so many things to do, so little time!

2002-10-05 Thread alan_oneil

ok, now don't get mad at me. here's another nonrelated
(well, sort of) question for everyone (especially
applescript or program savvy) out there.

I know it is common sense that you need system 7 and
4MB of ram in order to browse the web. what i want to
know is if anyone has ever seen a "remote control"
program for macs that will allow you to control a
server's desktop and, obviously, run remote programs
(ie netscape) on that server, only using your mac as a
dumb terminal to display a (probably slow-refresh)
screenschot of the server's screen? something like vnc?

Or if there is a way to make an applescript on the host
server to listen for any remote commands (ie something
like "go to www.lowendmac.com" or whatever that would
be in applescript [i'm no programmer]) and do them in
netscape, then save the result as a teachtext file
which could be accessed remotely via your "dumb"
sys6 "terminal". anyone know if this is feasible idea?

oh, by the way, i think it should be able to do all
this with the lightning-fast speed of localtalk, all of
around 200kbps (wow!)
please reply off list as this is not really pb-related.

thanks a lot you guys

alan

Got a question, listers.

I just downloaded Stuffit Expander from Aladdin's web site on my work PC,
but my new Powerbook 270C doesn't recognize it - trying to go to the PC
Exchange Control Panel to find something to open with (only SimpleText is
there). Found a de-binhexed version (.BIN) and downloaded it, same thing.
How do I persuade the machine to install this? Also, can anyone give me a
quick 'n' dirty idea of the differences between the 270C and 280C?

Thanks for any help, much appreciated.

2001-10-07 Thread Martin

Unless I'm completely misunderstanding something, what Jim says here isn't
right, and Janice is right to be concerned about polarity. Reversing
polarity is a good way to fry things, last I heard, and not all devices use
the same polarity. Best to be certain you've got it right before you plug
   anything in.

   Beverly

Just a footnote to Beverly's observation:

When I was a little boy, many years ago (I'm a bigger boy now), I was with my
dad, buying an oil filter at Canadian Tire.I remember asking him why there were
so many different sizes and shapes of oil filter; couldn't three or four sizes
work for every car and truck? Dad said that was a Good Question. I
was too young
to know better than to ask such questions, knowing nothing about profits and
marketing and those sort of things.

The "standard" power plugs that we see on everything, in anything but standard
sizes (last time I checked there were NINE different sizes for these things,
hardly what I'd consider a standard), or non-standard in another very important
way: their polarity seems to be an entirely random affair, presumably based on
the whim of the engineer designing each product. While phono plugs
are typically
positive at the tip, and RCA plugs must be positive at the center in
order for the shield to be outside, power plugs can go either way,
and do.

Polarity, particularly with battery packs and power supplies for
electronics, is
most important, and you can fry your Powerbook beyond practical hope of repair
by applying reverse power to it's power input jack. Some wise guy
will tell me he
did it once for a few seconds and got away with it, but I hear you
can be struck
by lightning and get away with it, too. Polarity is easy to check
with any meter,
or VOM, or even an LED, and it's very important. Particularly when
you never know
how any given Power Plug is wired.

So there.

Maybe I have the wrong Modem script. I used the Gold
