You probably should have had to deal with an installer icon and
agree to the license agreement and offered the chance of a custom
install.

The CD should boot by holding down the " C " key after hitting the
power button and hearing the startup chime.

Did you press any reset button to dump NVRAM ?
You ,may have to use disk setup to format the disk also. Use HFS + format.
The CD was PB specific (pretty sure) but there was no installer icon
and no agreement. I pressed the space bar, which I thought was the
key sequence for booting from the CD. I pressed the reset button but
only for a fraction of a second, thinking that since the PRAM had
been out for an hour that all would be reset. Would I still have to
push the reset for a minute or so? And I thought there would be some
format choice but none has appeared. I will give it a bit and then
maybe reboot it. Damn, I hope I don't have to tear it apart again.
Thanks Flux.

You need to hit the reset for about 30 seconds to be sure it dumps.
NVRAM is a different animal than PRAM.

Then hold down the "C " key quickly after pushing the power key.
Hold it down until it boots. I assume this machine is like other Macs
in this respect.

I don't know if the 3400 has my 1400's habit of starting up with a
black screen after a reset. If so just adjust the brightness back up.

Good luck and you are very welcome,

3400 swap nears end - one more question

2005-02-10 Thread Brian Mahoney
Thanks to all who offered advice, esp. Roger! Hard drive is in, only one
semi-broken tab got in the way. No I am trying to load 9.1 via a
bootable CD. Is this install interactive or does it just sit there with
the welcome to mac os screen, no pointer, and the CD drive making noise
every now and then? The CD doesn't appear to be thrashing, so I think
it's working away but I'm a windows guy and am used to some
interactivity. Is this how the install goes or is something wrong? The
new drive is 40 gigs so it would take a while to initialize/format but
it's been about an hour now. (tell me this is normal ok?) Thanks!
