Intelligent Battery Update (IBR) is for PB 5X0s only, as far as I now
know. You might want to see if it actually works on a 5300.

I believe that Apple's "Battery Recondition" _might_ work on a 5300, but
I don't have much knowledge about 5300's right now. However, since the
5300's _do_ use NiMH battery cells in their pack, the procedure below
will be applicable

Hello Howard:

Actually, it does. It seems that the cool battery pack cools down the
enclosing plastics (in a PB 5X0) also, which keeps everything cool until
_after_ the battery pack is fully charged. The most important factor,
however, is that the battery pack will charge reasonably cool by itself
until it gets above about 35 °C , then the temperature of the batt. pack
will rise quickly. This is what I have noticed on my machine with my batteries.

Some of what I've read about NiMH batteries leads me to believe that
they degrade faster the longer they are exposed to higher temperatures.
They also may not like to get too cold (refrigerator, not freezer). I
figure that I'm keeping my batteries alive longer this way. I have one
revived battery pack that had about 350 charge cycles on it and I'd like
to get as much extra use out of it as I can.

Sincerely yours, Grizzlygiant

-Powerbook Battery Woes - 5300

2003-09-27 Thread J Sand

Will the below also work with a 5300?

If you take the battery out (right bay) and start IBR _then_ plug in
battery, it will try to charge it for a minute or two. Do this about 10
times if necessary before giving up.
If the above doesn't work, use a normal battery charger (150-1000
milliamps, 7-9V) and try charging the battery using sewing pins stuck
into the (+) and (-) terminals, they are marked on the battery, and
wires with alligator clips on the end for the actual connections. Check
the voltage after 4-24 hours with a voltage tester (multitester, etc.).
If you have 10V or better, your fine, just plug the battery into the
'Book and run about 5 charge/discharge cycles immediately. If you only
have 9V _or less_ after all this, you have one or more dead cells. Each
cell holds a normal 1.2V and there are 8 cells in the pack. In the
worst case, you can cut the case open and replace with the same "AA" cells.

Hello Howard:

I received a good tip from a Duo owner. Put the batteries in the
refrigerator, not the freezer, for an hour before you charge them. It
really works nicely.

Here we go again-Powerbook Battery Woes

2003-09-25 Thread maxtek
Hi Listers,

Anyone out there have any further suggestions on my bad 500 series battery?

The Apps I have tried so far:

Emmpathy 1.1
Emmpathy 2.0
Intelligent Battery Recondition

No luck with the above. Emmpathy stills reports the EMM is suspect. The
weird thing (and I hope this clicks with someone out there) is the battery
doesn't show up according to the operating system. If I remove it and put it
back in than it shows up as a dead battery in the menu at the top of the
screen.

Is this a condition of a corrupted EMM or is the actual battery contacts
inside the Powerbook bad. They have plenty of spring to them and the
contacts on the battery itself look fine.

Thanks for your help.

MaxTek

Check the archives. Seems to me I read in the
recent past that the problem could be with the
PowerBook's AC/battery charger and the solution
was to replace the unit that came with the 1400
with another one made for G3s (or the iMac

Hmmm...

Have you tried reseting the Power Manager. If you
replaced the battery, then obviously that isn't the
culprit.

If you've been through serial charging the battery as
well as the software programs you've mentioned and
have tried reseting the Power Manager, my next wonder
would be if something is damaged on the internal Power
Supply??? Dunno... just a thought.

As far as battery life goes... again, my experience
isn't based on Mac's, but color laptops will usually
run an average of 2 hours. The Lithium Batteries
improved upon this a bit, but my best run time with a
Toshiba Portege on a Lithium battery was 2 1/2 hrs.
With the older monochrome VGA screens, I used to be
able to get close to 3 hours on a recharge...

Cheers,
Sionnach

Sounds like "memory effect."

You need to get the battery drained of nearly all its power before
recharging it full, and if you can't do it on the PB try this trick: get an
automobile tail light bulb (12 volts, 5/15 Watts), a metal bulb holder that
bayonet locks the bulb in place. Have a technician or hobbyist solder two
hookup wires to the holder's terminals, stripping the other end to expose
the wiring. Connect the wires to the battery's electrical contact (it
doesn't matter which polarity) and watch the bulb light up. Wait until the
bulb filaments glow dim then recharge the battery.

I'd like to know the answers to this as well. I've never really been able to
run my PB 1400c on the battery. I bought it used and figured the battery
wouldn't hold a charge because it was worn out, so I bought a new one (these
things cost an arm and a leg). On the first full charge, it didn't last more
than 45 minutes. Subsequent recharges only lasted 10-15 minutes. Now it
won't even make it through a boot-up, even though all the indicaters say it
is fully charged. I also tried Battery Recondition as well, with very
minimal results.

I had followed all the recommendations I got out of the MAC Secrets book
about setting HD spindown and the other energy saver features, which helped
a little the first couple of times.

BTW, for Ilene, I don't think there was ever a possibility to get 4 hours
out of a 1400 battery. I've never ever heard of anyone getting that much
time out of any computer battery (some PC laptops have a dual battery setup
that they say can get 6 hrs).

Kindest regards,
Ken N.
