Just a thought,

If you mostly go into OS9 for iTunes, there is an iTunes install out
there for 8.6:). I don't remember exactly where I got it (Something
like, "The Worm In The Apple"), however 8.6 is the latest OS I
have, and I love it!
I don't know how updated it is, but it's the only version of iTunes
I've ever used and i LOVE it :D.

it's not an installer it's a patch for the installer or the installed
program and it works great, (even though I find iTunes clumsy and
messy, nothing yet can bet the simple playlist function in SoundApp,
it seems to match the music so that similair blends into similair
when you choose randome and dont give it too much memory, of course
this is all imagination, not so great lookin but very fast and can
play and convert (not to mp3 though) loads of fileformats, midi and
SD2 and also toastimages. But of course it has no screeneffects.)

AH HA! This is the thing that was tickling the back of my brain re: why one
might prefer 8.6+upgraded components to 9.x. Now, I recall reading this
somewhere in preparation for getting a USB card for my 3400, but is it true,
or 'urban legend'. If so, then it's 8.6 forever for me, as I'm just about
to pick up a cheap QuickCam VC to modify for use on my telescope...

And, oh yes, what about
running with or without virtual memory?
Bill, I have a 240mhz 3400c w/144MB of RAM also. I'm running a 32 gig HD
with three partitions so I'm fortunant enough to have both 8.6 and 9.1
installed on two of the three partitions. I can tell you now, that I can't
tell a difference in speed from what I do (Mosty web surfing and word
processing :p ) BUT, I use 8.6 a lot more often because it is compatable
with the USB card support software so I can hook up my USB CDRW and
printers. 9.1 is nice when I'm in the mood to listen to music because
iTunes runs terrific on this machine and I love the way iTunes operates. I
rarely ever use 9.1 unless software calls for it or if I want to play around
with iTunes. 9.1 will use up a lot more RAM over 8.6 with or w/o VM and
honestly, I can't tell a difference with VM on or off in speed either.

Now, Eric, you've not only added to my erudition about VM (for which I
am heartily appreciative) but you've also told me about the "sweet
spot" the 3400c has for OS8.6!

Seriously, thanks to you and all the other input I've received re the
best OS to run on a 3400 as well as re VM!

With VM off, the OS loads all the app's executable code at once, which makes
application launch take longer. This is done to ensure that there is enough
room remaining in RAM to support running the app.

With VM (or RAM Doubler) on, the OS only loads those portions of the
executable code that are immediately needed to support getting the app to
its initial running state. This shortens the initial launch time because
the OS will page in additional code as needed. If you've got an app with
LOTS of menu commands all having their own swatches of code, this should
result in a much slimmer RAM profile and a much faster load time. One
'gotcha' is that the paging in of not-yet-loaded code can slow the app down
by varying degrees *as you're using it*. The other 'gotcha', in the mobile
computing context, is that VM paging causes the HD to spin up.

My experience... On battery, VM = off (although you could use RAM Doubler
set to the 1.0x setting that enables the faster app loading and costs
completely negligible amount of time). On AC power, VM = RAM size + 1 MB.
This gives the faster app loading and you essentially never will page an
entire app out to disk (i.e., when your RAM would be filling up anyway, you
still run out of VM, although theoretically you could launch just one more
really tiny app...). I have never encountered a case where I could notice
any delay due to the OS paging in not-yet-loaded code.

Don't forget, I seem to recall that the original poster had mentioned not
having the 8.5/8.6 installer(s) available. That indicated to me that the
debate was staying with the already existing 9.0 or updating to either 9.0.4
or 9.1. Personally, I've not yet tried anything but 8.6 on my 3400/180s, as
I believe this is likely the OS 'sweet spot', especially if one keeps things
like CarbonLib, MRJ, and Quicktime updated.
