Okay gang... going back to this conversation a few days ago...

I took a chance and bought some Mac parts from a computer scrapper, sight
unseen. Let's see... some worthless floppies, a 7100/66 w/o any simms/dimms
whatsoever, a 14 monitor...

...oh! And a Duo 2300c w/ no HD, an okay screen (light brown vertical band
right down the middle of the display) and 56mb RAM. It looks like a
double-decker module; a smaller board fits on the bigger (familiar to me) RAM board...

I use a 280c, and have no intention of upgrading to the 2300c, BUT I would
like to upgrade to the 2300c SCREEN and maybe the RAM..

...but WHY CAN'T I USE the 48mb module in my Duo 280 to give it 52mb RAM??

Thanks,
Craig W.

The 2300 screen will not work with a 280 motherboard. People have
reported frying the cable upon attempts to do so (I wish I knew
why anyone know why this happens?)

You might be able to use the module but the motherboard is hardware
limited to seeing a 36 MB module. On the other hand, it might just
crash the machine.

Can I be so bold as to ask why you don't want to use the 2300? I looked up
some specs, and dimensions/weight wise it is identical to your 280...
Perhaps instead of putting the 2300 ram and screen on the 280, maybe the 280
HD in the 2300??

Or just pick up a cheap 'lil HD from a computer fair or something?

Well, simply put, I have been using the Duo 280c since 1995, in connection
with my profession (paralegal to lawyer to sports agent). I have so many things
on there that are 68k specific, I don't wanna go thru the hassle ...

Plus I have heard that 40mb of RAM in 68k is more than 56mb RAM in PPC...

Up to you of course, but may I suggest you give the 2300 a try... 68k code
has never had any problems running on a PPC in my experience, and anything
coded 'FAT' (ie, both PPC and 68k) will be remarkably improved in speed I'd
say... (probably even the 68k stuff will be better on a 100Mhz machine
compared to 40Mhz)

Don't know about the RAM thing though, sounds a little strange to me...

Thanks to everybody who replied. I guess I will take Dan K's advice hold
out for a higher-numbered machine as my PPC laptop, say, an x400. I will
wait a few months, hope to be astounded at how much my money will buy
then! 8-)

Am I correct in assuming that the PowerBook Duo 2300c uses the same RAM
cards as the previous Duos? I don't see anything in the Apple manuals
developer notes that suggest different.

Since those RAM chips are 32-bit wide (I presume), the 2300c has no L2
cache, on top of that, that would lead to pretty gruesome performance. (I
am vaguely considering upgrading a 270c, but am afraid that I will merely
have exchanged the best of the '030 PBs (as such things go) for a lousy
PPC PBook (as such things go).

It is my understanding that the Duo 2300c used the same RAM cards as the
previous Duos, AND the Duo 2300's had some RAM cards that (for some reason?) were
not for the lesser Duos... namely the 40mb and 48mb RAM cards.

But I ain't ne'er seen't them!

Since those RAM chips are 32-bit wide (I presume), the 2300c has no L2

I have often been told that the '040 33/66mhz Duo 280c I have was faster than
the 2300c, and what clinched it for me (not upgrading) was the reminder that
the PPC Duo could not run my bevy of 68k programs.

If I were you, I would consider upgrading to a 280c, which should be as easy
as swapping the motherboard... I believe the screens are the same.
