Re: Limping Lombard

2002-12-03 Thread Andrew Kershaw
BTW, I'm curious why Lombards would be considered OT for this list. It's a
PowerBook.
From Low End Mac's PowerBooks email list page:
PowerBooks is a forum for users of the original Mac Portable and all
pre-G3 PowerBooks (including pre-G3 models with G3 upgrades). For
owners of iBooks, G3 PowerBooks, and the PowerBook G4, we recommend
the G-Books list.

The one-off rule would apply to the PowerBook G3 (Kanga or 3500),
marginally to the Wallstreet, and certainly not to the Lombard,
Pismo, or any G4.

G-Books is specifically for these other 'books.

Peace,
Drew

I concur. I think trying to run OS 9.2.2 with 64 mb RAM is akin to towing a
full-sized mobile home with an VW bug. You can do it, but only in first

I'm betting the thing is depending VR. Is your HD busy all the time?

Get more RAM any ol' way.

Limping Lombard

2002-12-01 Thread J. Shea
I bought a Lombard from one of the LEM Swap listers, and although it works,
it is painfully slow. It has 64 MG RAM, running 9.2.2. I decided to run
TechTool Pro on it and booted from my TechTool CD, which took forever. When
it finally booted, TechTool could not see the internal hard drive. I
restarted, and ran TechTool and the System Files check failed, with the
result that 'a problem was found with the Enabler file on the volume When I
look in the Apple System Profiler it says there is no active enabler. I
tried booting from my 9.1 CD; same result. The only drive shown is the CD. I
ran Disk First Aid and it says the volume appears to be OK. Any suggestions?

OT! Re: Limping Lombard

2002-12-01 Thread Andrew Kershaw
This belongs on the G-Books list. This isn't even one off... You'll
get better responses from them anyway, considering they actually own
and talk about Lombards over there. Not everyone on this list has a
G3/G4 based PowerBook...

Your book shouldn't need a system enabler, especially under 9.2.2.

Is virtual memory on? Probably is if you've only got 64MB RAM!
Buy more RAM, it's dirt cheap, and turn off VM! Although the debate
over VM is beyond the scope of this message, IMHO VM defeats the
point of having a battery powered computer - if you're going to
thrash about on your disk every second the computer is on, your
battery will deplete far to quickly, defeating the mobility of your
PowerBook. Might as well tote an iMac around with you.

Do the usual voodoo dance (zap the PRAM, reset the power manager,
empty the prefs folder of what you don't need, etc) and see if that
helps.

Try a clean install of the OS. Systems with an OS installed by the
previous owner sometimes don't behave correctly... Sometimes (not in
all cases, of course!) the previous owner just didn't know what the
heck (s)he was doing with the computer.

Finally, check to make sure the RAM and CPU are properly seated.
Definitely make sure the hard disk is seated correctly. Sometimes a
slight misalignment will allow your computer to run, but not behave
correctly.

Sorry for the off topic post. I didn't mean to annoy this list. In fact, I
didn't even know there was a G-Book list. Guess I will join it.

I wanted to do a clean install, but when I boot from the OS CD, the internal

I will try this.

Am awaiting arrival of RAM ordered.

Thanks for your input.

I wanted to do a clean install, but when I boot from the OS CD, the internal

It is possible (probable?) that the drive is formatted with HFS+ and you
booted with a TechTools CD that is too old to be able to read an HFS+
partition?? If you run a HFS-only tool on an HFS+ partition I believe you
can really mangle things. It might just be easier to format and start over
if so.

If you boot from the internal HD (I don't see that you said the drive is
now non-booting), and put the 9.1 CD in, does the CD show up? There's
often no need to boot from the OS CD to do a clean system install, just
tell it clean install and you get a new system folder.

The 9.1 CD should have handled the HFS+ though. TechTool, maybe or maybe
not, depends on how old it is.

Ken

mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] will get you on the list.
This is, of course, another of the fabulous LEM lists.

All of Dan's lists can be found here:
http://www.lowendmac.com/lists/index.shtml

Read about G-Books here: http://www.lowendmac.com/lists/g-books.html
G-Books is a forum for users of G3- and G4-based PowerBooks and
iBooks. Those with pre-G3 PowerBooks should look to the PowerBooks
list for advice.

It was created on March 1, 2001 and has about 525 users.

You can read the _recent_ posts here:
